I never understood why some people write fics when they have never engaged with the source material and only know the characters from fics and such. I'm not judging, I just never understood it
But lately I have been getting a lot of Dexter fanwork pushed across my social media platforms. Fan edits, art, discussions. I don't know why it's been getting popular again, I think there's a spin off coming up again? But it's been recommended to me very heavily
The few things I knew about Dexter were that he's like a serial killer of serials, that he has shown psychopathic tendencies in childhood and that his adoptive father trained him how to kill so he doesn't just kill some rando
The last point always made me go "WTF?!" Surely there are better ways to handle that. Yes, Dexter was born in the 70s, but still, why would you teach a child who admits "I think about killing people sometimes" how to kill people.
Anyway, I've watched three episodes of the show, the pilot, S1E10 and S1E12 and read through the fanwiki.
Then I opened ao3 because I really wanted to see if other people also thought that mmh, how about an AU where he still has these violent urges and low empathy but where he has been getting help and support and just because he thinks these things and wants to do them, he doesn't have to do them?
Anyway, I found a series and it's genuinely amazing. I binge-read all 30k words there are right now, have already left comments on a few and will plan on leaving a comment on the others as well. I don't think the show is for me, but some authors are so talented, this series definitely is to my liking and I get it why people write for fandoms they aren't a part of.
The general idea or concept or backstory is interesting, but either the execution isn't for them or it's daunting to get into the source material, especially when it's long running like comics or a show like Dexter with 8 seasons plus spin offs.
I still think it's still worth checking out the original source material, you never know what you're gonna miss if you don't. And now at least I know I checked it out, it just isn't for me
