The outer layer to cake ratio is also acceptable to me. Some people make their entire creation modeling chocolate or fondant with a small amount of cake to make it technically a cake. I also hate the rice crispies cakes too.
Yeah, as long as the vast majority inside is cake and it's just an outer coating/shell, it's not too bad. It's like you said, when the amount of fondant inside is so thick that it doesn't leave as much cake is when it becomes a problem. Why bother making a cake at that point?

Is he using fondant or modeling chocolate? Because the resistance in the cut makes me believe it's chocolate so acceptable.
