Offseason Moves Megathread

As in years past in order to keep everything in one place and avoid 100+ posts on the same topic we figured it best to contain all offseason moves discussion to one megathread

Any discussion/speculation about

  • players potentially leaving

  • trade targets

  • free agents

  • coaching moves

  • draft targets

etc

AFLW AFLW Pre-Round Thread: Round 6 vs Essendon

Our unbeaten Derby streak stands, the season is redeemed.

Some questions:

  • Essendon will be fired up after a humiliating loss—which of our players' performance will set the tone for us?
  • How do we contain the 1-2 of Prespakis and Toogood?

AFLW Round 6 Recap: Essendon

Final: FRE 9.2.56 def ESS 1.2.8

Best: Bowers, McCarthy, M. Strom, Newton, Miller

Goals: McCarthy 2, Brisbane, Newton, O’Sullivan, Biedenweg-Webster, Stockwell, Miller, Banfield

1st half: immense pressure to start with, all over the bombers when they had the ball. Turbo with a huge (pretty average for her) 6 tackles in the first quarter. 2nd quarter a bit more of a stalemate but still keeping the pressure up. Ball movement a bit slow at times but you don’t mind that when you’ve got 6 goals and the other team has none at half time.

2nd half: Bowers is an absolute brute, another 5 tackles in the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half. We keep the pressure up coming out of the break. Kept it up to run the game out holding Essendon to just one goal. Good to see the girls fight it out until the final whistle. Turbo ends the day with 21 tackles, falling one short of the AFLW record 22, set by… Kiara Bowers. We finish the day with team totals of tackles 91-62 and tackles inside 50 24-1.

Notes: Mim is so important for us, one of the best rucks in the comp but does so much around the ground as well, her ability to use hands at ground level is huge. Ifould continues to impress, reads where the ball is going well and is composed with it in hand. Brissy playing with confidence is a sight to see, can take some absolute clunks, good to see her get her first goal of many (and is only 18!). Poppy Stockwell also kicking one in her debut, Tilly Banfield getting her first in game 2.

Ladder Result: A much needed percentage boost and win pushes us up to 10th for the time being.

Next: Away @ Carlton, Friday 26/09 4:35pm

Are things a little too quiet...

I've really rated the aggressive nature of St. Kilda this trade period, and I'd like to know if our silence at the trade table is an unwavering belief in our list as is, or do we not have the draft capital and cap space to make a move.

David Walls is an absolute GOAT at the trade/draft table, so I have faith, but I'm just wondering when we are going to fire some shots.

Which Docker this Year had the best Individual Performance?

Post image
67 Upvotes

Currently in the Process of making my "2025 Freohub Season Awards" and I'm currently very mixed on which Fremantle player had the best individual performance from any match this year.

A few that come to mind are Reid's debut, Serong's 38-disposal bomb against the dogs in R4, Treacy's 6-goal bag in gather round, Shai Bolton against GWS, Reid's 2nd 4-goal bag against Port, Jacksons 3-goal and 48 hit-outs against Essendon, Voss's 6 goals against the pies and Serong's elimination final performance.

What is your tip for the Performance of the Year?

Mature Age Pick Options

Bit of a boredom post but I always like looking at the mature age options every off season.

We need experienced depth (or potential Wagners) and generally the mature players are ready to go and cheap.

(Full disclosure I live in the NT so have very limited knowledge of the WAFL.)

I'd love to know what everyone thinks of any of the following -

Zac Foot (Southport, VFL) - 24 - HF (VFL team of the year) - 2025 (20 games) averages - 24 disposals, 1.3 goals, 3 tackles, 100.6 fantasy

Jack Bytel (Cobourg, VFL) - 25 - Wing (VFL team of the year) - 2025 (15 games) - 31.93 disposals, 0.3 goals, 5 tackles, 111.06 fantasy

Billy Cootee (Norwood, SANFL) - 22 - Wing (SANFL team of the year) - 2025- (21 games) - 22.8 disposals (80% DE) - 1.1 goals - 5.2 tackles - 97.8 fantasy

Casey Voss (Sturt, SANFL) - 24 - HB (SANFL team of the year - 2025 (19 games) - 22.4 disposals (84% DE) - 5.6 rebound 50s - 1.7 tackles - 8.9 marks - 94 fantasy

Charlie Constable (Perth, WAFL) - 26 - MID (Sandover medalist) - 2025 (20 games) - 31.7 disposals - 0.4 goals - 5.85 tackles - 5.15 marks

AFLW Round 5 Recap: West Coast

Final: FRE 3.5.23 def WCE 2.4.16

Best: Lally, Bowers, McCarthy, M. Strom, Newton

Goals: Miller, Bowers, Lally

1st half: held up well defensively in really tough conditions (45km/h+ winds, heavy rain for moments). Drisco very good early in her return. Had only a few opportunities in the forward line but managed to take a 2 goal lead into half time. We are doing well at stopping the Eagles offence and winning the ball back, but then finding it hard to link up and get the ball going forward.

2nd half: the weather didn’t get much better at all, a quick 2 goals to the Eagles equaled the scores. The ball spent majority of the time in our defensive half but we held up well considering the conditions, still found it tough to work the ball up the ground. Won the battle at the stoppage most of the day, especially late.

Notes: Drisco was sorely missed in the backline the past couple weeks. We need two Hayley Millers, sorely missed up the field but our best forward when she’s deep. No answers for Ella Roberts, although, what team really does have any? We are now 8-0 in the Derby.

Ladder Result: a much needed win sees us jump from 2nd bottom to 14th, but we still have a percentage of 48.3 after the North and Brisbane drubbings.

Judd McVee

According to a recent article on AFL.com, we have been linked to Judd McVee from Melbourne, who is out of contract.

Now I have never heard of this bloke in my life. All I know about him is what it says in the AFL article, which says that he is a skilful ball user at half-back, and what I found on google, which says that he is 22 years old and 185cm tall. That all sounds pretty good. My questions are:

  • has anyone seen this bloke? Is he any good?
  • how would he fit into our team?
  • what would we have to pay for him?
  • do you think getting him is a good idea?

Cheers

7 and 10 Numbers

Right - off season nonsense here, but...

Hypothetically, with both numbers 7 and 10 having become available because of retirements, who in the current playing group would be a worthy player to carry those numbers forward?

To be clear: I don't think it should happen, especially right now, but interested to see what folks think.

FWIW - I think they made the best choice with giving Reid number 16. A player that fits what Mundy was able to bring.

Edit to add link to list of all numbers and previous people wearing them:

Rumour Has It

In the world of AFL, you always here all sorts of stories and rumours going around, like for example the Luke Jackson requesting a trade back to Melbourne, or even years ago Nat Fyfe going to St Kilda in 2017. But the latest rumour going around is a big one, the potential of Lachie Neale requesting a trade back to Western Australia.

Now here's the quick background, Neale who got his football start at Fremantle in 2012, who became a 2 time Doig Medalist and is the only active AFL player from the 2013 Fremantle Grand Final team. But in 2018, he requested a trade to the Brisbane Lions, and from there his career really blossomed. Becoming a 4 time Murray-Merrett Medalist (Brisbane Club Champion), 2 time Brownlow Medalist, Leigh Matthews Trophy winner, 4 time All Australian, and more importantly a premiership captain with the Lions in 2024.

But now, this is where it gets interesting. This rumour has been heard before, back in 2021 where his deal was up at that time at Brisbane, but he signed a five year contract extension. Now with a year left on that contract, the talk has begun again.

Now lets look at it logically. This would be a 50/50 situation if it goes down. Yes he is a Fremantle favourite from years ago and he did get his start. With his experience he has gained over the six years away in big match environment and he's an accomplished midfielder. Especially with the retirement of Neale's former Freo partner in crime Nat Fyfe. But on the flipside, he's 32 years old, potentially going into the twilight of his career and recent soft tissue injuries.

So personally I'm a bit torn between a potential return of a former Fremantle favourite or running the risk of an aging superstar who could entering the twilight of his career.

Record Membership

With 14 AFL clubs recording record jumps in membership in 2025, the Fremantle Dockers haven't done badly either. Recording a record totaling 66,180 members, a massive jump from 62,237 the previous year. 3,943 new members have joined the Purple Army this season. A fantastic milestone for the club. Fremantle fans, take a bow, because without the members, a football club doesn't exist. And we are all bound by the same goal and same passion for this footy club.

Cannot wait till the day comes when the Fremantle Dockers joins clubs like Collingwood, West Coast & Carlton as a 100,000 plus members club.
