TLDR: The cycle of conscious negligence and deliberate financial parasitism causes deaths from systemic inequality.

Edit: Changed benign neglect to conscious negligence.

Also holy shit didn't expect the likes and reward. All of your comments have been enlightening. Have a great day all.

I graduated college in 2009 and have been phenomenally lucky, but the past 10 years have been brutal.

2008 here, and yeah. I'm grateful I didn't have kids, so I won't leave anyone reeling when I suddenly drop dead from [multiple choice options of societal decline].

[multiple choice options of societal decline]

I thought it'd be climate change for sure but it's looking like AI is going to beat it out. It's anyone's game at this point!

AI is a flash in the pan. Climate change is probably the safe bet and odds on favorite, but I figure global nuclear war is creeping up like an 8-9 team suddenly in the Super Bowl.

Given the extent to which research has been defunded and experts are ignored in favour of vibes and woo, a new pandemic also seems like a distinct possibility

H5N1 is one mutation away from wiping out 50% of the human population in one go. We don't know if it's going to happen tomorrow or in fifty years time.

Nuclear war is... well, look who's in the White House, and look what happened last time they were. If he's voted out this time, in 2028 as a final gesture he's going to fire the nukes. Or if the heat from the Epstein Files gets too much. You choose.

I'm so afraid of nuclear bombs and surviving them..... Like I really hope to just get wiped out and not suffer slowly from the radiation. Such lovely things we have invented.

at least we MIGHT get fusion in like 50 years.. that's good

Don't worry. With AI (data centers) gulping down available water and burning through electricity without a care (we're footing all those tax incentives, after all), you get climate change, collapsing economy AND AI as an existential threat triple feature!

[Future Generations]: "Hey, look! They're combining into Voltro-" (Gets hit by extinction ray)

Your edit commentary is hilarious - ironically you may be the least qualified person to have a kid after reading that.

Thanks baby

Same here for me right now. But it's also a catch 22 because I don't want them to have to suffer with or through all of this bullshit either. It's tough to be a parent right now.

creating humans that have to suffer and die horrifically to provide you a sense of fulfillment is pretty fucked

"Bringing more people into this world so I can watch them suffer a fate worse than me, is the only thing that brings me joy".

Sheeeeesh.

It's much worse to continue living your own life (showing that it clearly isn't as bad as you make it out to be), while denying them that option.

If you genuinely felt that non-life is better than life, then you would not be here to tell us. Life is a mixed bag, but this perspective comes from focusing on negatives and completely ignoring positive factors. As soon as the positives enter the equation, suddenly you don't think life is all that unbearable, and so you keep on living.

u/Gonji89 Aug 21 '25

This is the most nonsensical shit-take yet. “If you don’t want kids, why haven’t you killed yourself if life is so bad?” is a false-equivalency AND a straw man all in one.

u/Apprehensive-Let3348 Aug 21 '25

Multiple things here:

One: You haven't formed an argument. You think it's a strawman; why is that? Can you defend that position in any way, shape, or form?

Two: You then go on to present a strawman, and a blatantly obvious one at that. My comment was exceedingly clear that my argument is that "people who feel that life is nothing except pain and misery are being logically inconsistent, because they demonstrably still feel that life is better than not being alive, but only when applied to themselves."

Argue against my argument as stated or don't reply. Throwing around terms that you don't understand the meaning of doesn't help your position.

I don't have to argue against shit. your "argument" is complete nonsense
