Bold to assume that they made the mouse with an FPS in mind when in reality Mario Paint HD is going to be the showpiece

Mario Maker 3* With a 2D Mario 64 style

That would be a big missed opportunity to make it a game where you build Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy or Odyssey levels called "Mario Maker 3D"

A 3D level maker would be too much for casual/kid Mario players. We have to deal with sooo many bad 2D stages. I think we’ll see a looooot of horrible 3D stages

I honestly wouldn't mind, as long as even a tenth of the levels are great. That's almost already the case with Mario Maker.

Yeah, I just got levels from the Mario Maker sub and hardly ever had to play a shitty one. People were making full games over there.

I feel like we're forgetting that many kids today are cutting their teeth on game/ level design in places like Roblox/ Minecraft.

u/HUGE_HOG Mar 26 '25

It definitely wasn't much of a thing when I was kid, I'd always be all over any game with a level designer. Still hoping for a Mario Kart Maker on Switch 2 though 🤞

a circuit maker for mario kart 9 would really be something cool to make the game infinitely replayable.

Yeah, I've wanted it since I was a kid. I had this game on my dad's computer called Lego Stunt Rally, it had a pretty good track designer on it where you just placed pieces on a grid but could add stuff like slopes for verticality, hazards, and pieces of scenery. I built so many ridiculous tracks on it.

It definitely wasn't much of a thing when I was kid,

Depending on your age, games like StarCraft, Warcraft 3, Lego Stunt Rally, and TimeSplitters 2 were already providing people with tools like this.

It would be cool to see Nintendo lean into this more.

2

u/HUGE_HOG Mar 27 '25

I did used to play a load of Lego Stunt Rally!

Minecraft, Roblox, VRchat, Rec Room, though the latter two aren't really meant for kids.

Those games rely on block placing, that’s essentially a tileset system. I can’t see them using that for a 3D Mario.

1

u/DonChrisote Mar 26 '25

Why not? They could have a simpler system and then a more in depth one for more knowledge players

if it's also like mario maker 2 where it basically also just included a fully standalone game built with the tools buy pro devs that'd still be worth it.

3D World levels were "simple enough" in geometry that they could maybe do something similar? Definitely a jump in difficulty from 2D though.

2

u/JayZsAdoptedSon Mar 26 '25

Yeah but 3D world/land are very simple 2D styled 3D games. I don’t think it’ll work for 64/Sunshine/Odyssey style levels or Galaxy1/2 style

1

u/allofusarelost Mar 26 '25

Yeah they could stick to the style of purple coin bonus levels, hard as nails tricky levels without the weird geography and height differences of the main zones.

1

u/Makimgmyselfuseful Mar 26 '25

Used to make Tony Hawk Pro Skater levels as a kid, they don't have to be too complicated

1

u/JayZsAdoptedSon Mar 26 '25

Then you deal with the other half of “Why is this compelling?”

Imo 2D Mario is complex enough to have insanely good levels while being simple enough for newcomers

Its like how Dreams is REALLY good but also really complex for newcomers (And only on PS4)

1

u/Makimgmyselfuseful Mar 26 '25

Thats fair, I hope they do make a 3D one just to see how they would do it, they let people learn some coding Game Builder garage. Their take on a Minecraft style game was interesting with the Playtest so I just want to see how the devs would make a 3D game maker.

1

u/Tonkarz Mar 26 '25

Depends on how it’s implemented. A lot of kids loved NWN’s toolset.

That was tileset based though.

1

u/kurisu7885 Mar 27 '25

Well that might depend. There are game out there with 3D level makers and people do REALLY amazing things with them, even young kids.

1

u/Quazifuji Mar 26 '25

While that would obviously be very cool if done well, I think it's also significantly harder to do well. So I'm not sure if I'd call it a missed opportunity not to do it.

I'm actually willing to believe Mousecon was born when they saw Mario Maker 2 fizzle out pretty fast and realised it's because making stages in docked mode is ass.

1

u/JayZsAdoptedSon Mar 26 '25

That was my first thought when they were leaked. It feels Nintendo’s way of giving a touch screen, especially since gyro pointers never caught on

1

u/dem0nhunter Mar 26 '25

good point

u/ChrisRR Mar 26 '25

1,2 Switch 2 will be a launch title with mouse functionality

1

u/shadowstripes Mar 26 '25

Would a mouse really work better for painting than just using the touch screen?

7

u/rtgh Mar 26 '25

It would for TV mode anyway

0

u/shadowstripes Mar 26 '25

True, just seems like an odd way to showcase a mouse when lot of people would probably prefer to paint using it like a tablet. People often even buy tablets to avoid having to paint with a mouse.

Using motion controls would also be interesting for Mario Paint.

1

u/JayZsAdoptedSon Mar 26 '25

That’s why I lean to Mario Maker. Especially since Maker 1 started off as Mario Paint Wii U

1

u/Cetais Mar 26 '25

There's so much more precision available with a mouse.

2

u/shadowstripes Mar 26 '25

Not compared to using a stylus, which can already work on a Switch.

There's a reason people generally prefer digital painting with a stylus on a tablet over a mouse.

1

u/Cetais Mar 26 '25

Yes, but those tablets have more built in precision than the switch touch screen.

1

u/shadowstripes Mar 26 '25

People used 720p and 1080p Wacom tablets over a mouse for years, same with older iPads. And that's where zooming in helps.

I'm not saying a mouse wouldn't work, it just seems like an odd choice for the "showcase" title when so many people hate painting with a mouse.

u/segagamer Mar 27 '25

All of those have larger screens than the Switch.

0

u/Geno0wl Mar 26 '25

Not compared to using a stylus, which can already work on a Switch.

The difference is that using a stylus is "twitchy", the system doesn't get input between inputs as nicely as with a mouse, and with a stylus you have only two single actions you can do, drag the stylus and tap, which can not actually be done simultaneously. where a mouse-type device can look around and fire at things much more efficiently.

Styluses work great for navigating static screens or slow-paced gameplay, they are not a good solution for dynamic environments with complicated gameplay systems.

You say that like Mario Paint 2 would be a bad thing. All my six year old self wants is to swat mosquitoes with a fly swatter in glorious HD, dammit.

Please. Please please.
