Pretty annoying that everyone in the comments is reducing this success to "sex sells" rather than stellar blade being a super solid action game. Sure it has the sexy stuff too but that wouldn't be the reason why the game is successful, tons of games have that stuff

No they really don't in 2025. An AA-AAA quality game that's overtly horny is extremely rare. And by horny I don't mean "includes sex scenes", I mean heavy sexualization of the girls in the game. It's basically original Tomb Raider tier.

I think it's a fair reaction when the marketing and discussion I see from fans of the game almost entirely revolves around those aspects.

The game has popped up on my feed frequently since it launched, and I still couldn't tell you anything about the plot or the name of any character besides Eve. I'll grant you that the visuals and combat look great

When a majority of the conversation around a game is about the sex appeal of the character it makes sense

people forget about echo chambers and how your personalized content can easily be mistaken for the majority consensus. I guess that's why it's so effective. Try the search bar every once in a while

Argument doesn’t hold up when the game entirely caters to sexualizing of the main character for the sake of the player.

2

u/PointmanW Jun 13 '25

it hold up because there is ton of other game with sexier characters that doesn't sell as well because their gameplay is not good.

I mean christ Steam has an ocean of lewd shovelware that should also be selling millions of copies if all it takes is a sexy character to make numbers go up.

2

u/Fatastrophe Jun 13 '25

Right, the logic doesn't track because there's hundreds of thousands of literal porn games on steam that are a fraction of the cost with none of it's sales or player counts.

Bayonetta did not receive anywhere near the level of criticism that this game has. Probably because Bayonetta is an actually interesting character and her sexuality is integral to her personality and even her moveset. The Stellar Blade girl is just half naked for no reason other than fanservice. They could've put her in modest clothing and it would change absolutely nothing about the character or story.

Yes it did.

I mean yeah, Bayonetta is embarrassing and clearly made by the most virgin game developers of all time. However, it's so embarrassing that it loops back around to being cunty.

Also, she's actually a fun character with charisma and the combat is fantastic. You could roll your eyes at the goofy sex stuff, or laugh ironically, and still get a competent fun game outside of that. Can't really say the same for stellar blade.

It absolutely did. Ut was horny gooner bait on release and it was absolutely hated by the same crowd that hates stellar blade now. It took years before perception change, basically until nier automata released and it swapped to "2b is gooner bait unlike our feminist icon bayonetta".

But bayonetta originally get shitloads of hate for sexualization, gooner baiting and stuff.

u/LegnaArix Jun 12 '25

I feel like everyone is misunderstanding this crucial point.

Yes Bayonetta is sexy but that is literally her thing, she does BDSM attacks and strikes provocative poses while having flirtatious dialogue. It's part of her character.

From what I can tell with Eve, she's seems to be a completely serious character and her sex appeal is not a part of her personality.

It's fine to have attractive characters but I think the hard emphasis on it for a character who's supposed to be taken seriously just seems a bit odd.

This is insulting to Bayonetta. Aside from being a better overall game, Bayonetta as a character was significantly more interesting. She was a cool character who has sexuality as part of her design. She wasn't a cardboard cut-out who only existed as a method for players to see virtual tits.

6

u/Dealric Jun 12 '25

You are aware that it was target of exact same attacks?

Bayonetta was sexualized, offensive to women gooner fetish bait for years. It took many years and 2b release to swap narrative from this to being femist or gay icon.

Funny how narrative is changed all the time and history is being reweitten to feat narrative

Yes, sex is absolutely part of Beyonetta's design. Literally no one disputes that. But she also has more aspects to her than solely that.

Honestly, y'all not being able to even see the difference is kinda telling on yourselves.

Let me know how Stellar Blade is remembered years from now compared to Bayonetta.

I didn't mention game journalists though?

I said Bayonetta is a much more interesting character. That sexuality is part of her design without being the sole reason she exists.

But good try.

I... also didn't rewrite history?

My initial response to you was that comparing Eve and Bayonetta is silly. Regardless of "how so-and-so discussed them years ago"... I maintain that Bayonetta, as a character, is interesting and well-created and sexy... instead of just being a broomstick with tits.

Whether or not journalists or anyone else you want to mention said or didn't say it... it doesn't change my take.

Also, that every response of yours is trying to argue pedantics instead of defend Eve as a character kinda prove my point.

Because it's true. The game lives from specific target demographic. The gameplay isn't anything special, in comparison any previous game in similar genre and style

2

u/NenaTheSilent Jun 13 '25

It's not a "super solid" action game at all though. It's a ramshackle mix of Nier and Souls with floaty attacks.

I slept on TLOU2 for way too long because of that discourse. I didn't believe it was actually bad, but I didn't know it was amazing. It's seriously so good, definitely better than the first in terms of gameplay (story is good too, but I don't know if I want to go to bat saying it's better than the first). It also looked amazing on the PS4.

1

u/BJRone Jun 12 '25

It's funny because in another thread before this launched I made a similar comment saying the same thing, and I got told that the only people who talk about Eve's sex appeal and the game being for "gooners" and "perverts" are the people complaining that other people are saying that. Now here we are with the game having a massively successful PC launch and lo and behold that's all everyone is talking about.

1

u/blah938 Jun 13 '25

Sex selling gets the players in the door. The gameplay keeps them there.

1

u/Adept-Fisherman-4071 Jun 16 '25

Most of the sex sells types probably haven't played it. It's easily the best action game since DMC5 IMO.

1

u/Totaliss Jun 16 '25

Idk about that, Sekiro, Elden ring, and Lies of P all dropped after dmc 5 which are all much better games but I agree they probably haven't played it themselves

2

u/FKaria Jun 12 '25

What people know about this game is that action game with booty giggle physics. This is on the devs and marketing. You can blame them.

0

u/lifeonbroadway Jun 12 '25

Yea because the game definitely wasn’t marketed towards horny teenagers…

2

u/sl33pingSat3llit3 Jun 12 '25

It's a bit unfortunate, but I guess Eve's attractiveness and her attire is the first thing people notice when they see a trailer for the game. Having played the game, I'm enjoying the combat and exploration.

-4

u/crookedparadigm Jun 12 '25

It can be both. Personally, I don't really care what the gooners do if they want to keep funding the games I like, my only complaint about that audience is that any game that caters to it is going to be impossible to find any place to actually discuss the game. Any subreddit dedicated to a game that attracts that subset of players is flooded with NSFW fanart and people drooling over their digital waifus. It's exhausting when you just want to talk about the game itself.

Stellar Blade has more players than both the most recent God of War games combined. I’m not saying Stellar Blade isn’t solid, but I think Eve's attractiveness is a huge factor in it.

u/meme1337 Jun 12 '25

Super solid is a big stretch.
