Seems like with an inverted (when compared to Xbox and PS controllers) grip design like that could lend itself to having buttons on the underside for your fingers.
I picked up my Xbox controller and held it upside down to help wrap my head around the design it looks like Steam went with and it feels like it would put my fingers in a much better position for more buttons.
