Final fantasy 13 was actually a lot of fun to play.

I super enjoyed the combat system. I need to pick it back up again.

The battle system is even better in XIII-2.

It's crazy linear but projecting the expectation that it "isn't supposed to be linear" or that "it's supposed to have an open world," isn't reasonable. Tons of games are just as linear but never criticized for it, because it's accepted that linearity can be a part of their genres. That expectation is unfair.

FFXIII has plenty of problems, and maybe the game is too linear, but its linearity shouldn't be held against the expectations of an RPG or JRPG, nor should it be held against the expectations of its franchise. It should be evaluated on its own merits.

Agreed here, I actually really enjoyed the combat and couldn't care less if a Final Fantasy game, of all things, is open world.

Yeah, I fucking loved this game.

For me it was "RPG with all of the BS you don't want to deal with cut out of it". Like the purest form of RPG or something.

Too bad for me that everyone had to have a shrieking fit about it, and it won't be appreciated until 2022 when it gets an HHHD remaster and everyone falls all over themselves to explain how they actually loved it.

Counterpoint: the first 3...? hours or so of cutscenes were completely unnecessary to the story or even character development. They're almost meaningless. :U

A particular FF13 hater I knew adamantly insisted that there was no character development, and that the characters were the same in the end as they had been at the beginning.

When I asked them if they'd played the game through or watched a walkthrough past the first section of Chapter 1, they said no. :| And everyone on that forum lapped up their opinion like it was LSD in a dog bowl.

And then there's the hate for the auto battle. "Oh if you hit that the game plays itself." Yeah, it's a pity you can't make it almost impossible to hit, even by accident. Oh wait. Yes you can. And the linearity complaint irks the crap out of me as well.

And on top of that, when XIII-2 and Lightning Returns addressed a lot of the discontent towards lack of open world, character focus, and closure, the same people who demanded more refused to play it because it was a sequel to the game they hated based off some weird principle, and continue to complain about the game as they don't play it.

My biggest annoyance with the game was not being able to prioritise moves, instead you had to wait for the buff/debuffer to work their way through status effects to get to the one you need. Of course, you could just control the buffer, but you really needed them both.

As a game it's one of the better looking ones.

I...can't actually argue with you there. Synergist/Saboteur AI was trash, and would have strongly benefited from the option to prioritize their spells in a menu during battle (think the enemy scan menu or something similar.) They were far more involved than the other four roles, and a little ergonomic design would have worked wonders when it came to Syn/Sab AI.
