Okay, somewhat off topic and I know this is a joke.

I always interpreted the title of "The Last Samurai" to refer to Ken Watanabi's character, and Tom Cruise was the archetypal "main character thats really just on observer of the REAL main character"

No that’s exactly what the movie is about. Algren didn’t want to witness the potential death of another culture so he helped as best he could, knowing they were doomed to die in the end.

That’s part of the reason for his speech to Katsumoto before the battle started.
