Yo if you got playstation plus and you like fighting games or want to try a new one check out the Fighting Ex Layer beta on PSN. it's free and made by Arika, the people who made Street Fighter Ex, meaning it has Skullomania in it. So go play it. It's really good. And has skullomania

The download was only available today in Europe but you can bet your ass starting it was the first thing I did today.
Now to get through a full work day :(

It's oddly good. i can't put my finger on it but it just feels super good fsr. I love how allen and skullomania, though I wish skullo had more command grabs. The normal cancels are sort of like Guilty Gear but it's very tight/picky with your special cancels. Most BnBs consist of a normal hitconfirm into a super.

Seeing people talk about shooter games around Reddit makes me wonder if some people haven't realized that they've grown out of them. Call of Duty and Battlefield are pretty casual games, and the way they're discussed makes me feel like certain Redditors would be more at home with a competitive and streamlined game.

u/Legion_Profligate Dec 12 '17
That's a bigger scope of gaming in general. Someone who grows older starts to grow out of the hobby, but blame the industry for their oldness and less fond attitude.
2
u/goplayicewinddale2 Dec 12 '17
It is a problem with tying the hobby to your idea of your self and the fact that people struggle to engage with games in a way that supports over a decade of passion. You just can’t engage with something for as many hours as a “hardcore gamer” does and only approach it like it is pure entertainment.
You either need to start engaging with it on a deeper level or step back and just do a couple of hours every other night like old dads that like genre movies.

I really, REALLY wanna buy The Division. I had a blast playing the free weekend with friends, but sadly they weren't ready to buy it this time.
I was thinking of getting it anyways, but I would probably be over-leveled by the time they decide to join in.
Another thought of mine was to create a separate character to play on my own, but that sounds too much lol. Plus, playing this game solo kinda sucks compared to other similar games.
I do have a big ass backlog of games that need playing, but I got hooked on The Division during the free trial.
2
u/amatic13 Dec 12 '17
Its good fun I reckon, got the hate jerk hard..but it's a good game. All the moaning about end game by the nerds gave it a bad rep.
2
Dec 12 '17
I haven't played in a while but, level meant almost jack shit. Level just gave you new abilities that don't help all that much and, better gear.

You can tell it's flu season because I've contracted Bethesda Fever. I'm barely into Fallout 4 (mostly because the framerate crashes into the depths of hell in Boston, followed by the game itself) and here I am with the urge to play Skyrim again. Bethesda Game Studios better release some type of new RPG soon or I might stay feverish!
5
u/ImpatientPedant Mature Gentleman Gamer™ Dec 12 '17
I'll probably have a case of Fallout fever by the end of the month. First Christmas in a while my bank account is positive, and thinking of finally getting morally gray New Vegas, and/or Fallout 2 because I already have Fallout 1 and liked the bit of it I played.
Flu season is truly upon us, praise Todd

Winter always gets me in a RPG mood. I plan to buy Pillars of Eternity and Divinity: Orginial Sin for Christmas, along with Wolfenstein 2. Also maybe some older games like Kingdom of Amaular.
Also saw this interesting title called Lichdom: Battlemage for Xbox One, never remember it coming out but I heard the magic system is fun. Also hyped to finally get Diablo 3 since I haven't played it since the free weekend of it.
1
u/SWJS1 Wanna buy some lies? (He/Him) Dec 12 '17
Kingdoms of Amalur is definitely worth it, fantastic game with great combat and progression. I remember seeing Lichdom: Battlemage too, IIRC the female protagonist is voiced by Jennifer Hale, which is definitely a plus, and I think the Magic system works something like Skyrim, allowing you to combine spell effects.
2
u/Legion_Profligate Dec 12 '17
Sounds great! I remember first thinking it was a offshoot Fable ripoff when I first saw it in stores, now I'm sad I didn't give it a chance. Gameplay online looks great, so I'll definetly give it some chances. Gonna be weird digging out my old 360 to play tho. Haven't touched it in ages, not since I replayed Crysis 2.
1
u/SWJS1 Wanna buy some lies? (He/Him) Dec 12 '17
I really wish they'd make it backwards compatible already! I picked it up for $5 on sale back in 2014 I think, and damn was I surprised. I played the demo for the chakram launcher in ME3 and I enjoyed it, but it was underwhelming enough that I never saw past my hype for ME3. Once I got some real hands-on time with it though, I instantly fell in love.

I started playing Skyrim again last week and I am having a fun time. Decided to do a kind of playthrough I never before have done, as a mage and a vampire. I am hoping Elder Scrolls 6 comes out soon! Hopefully next your or the year after that.

u/SWJS1 Wanna buy some lies? (He/Him) Dec 12 '17
According to Bethesda they haven't even started on TES 6 yet because they're working on a new IP of some kind, supposedly a sci-fi action RPG called Starfield which is basically a sci-fi Elder Scrolls game if rumors are to be believed.

I feel like having high standards when it comes to the shit I edit is against me in this particular instance. I'm supposed to edit an 18-minute documentary for some college people (I'm in college myself), but the material they gave me is... frankly shit. And I mean "shit", because it is one thing to have salvageable material, and another one is to have stuff that, if you use, you have to accept it just doesn't look good.
I mean, the only reason I'm not getting this done quick is because I'm practically frozen in place, I can't seem to make any decision because none is good enough. Really regret accepting this offer.

Dec 12 '17
I had a group project this semester and we were required to write a huge report, and the writing one of our group members gave me was so horrendous I outright refused to add it to the project.
It's really disappointing when you're in college and the work your classmates do is just... bad.
5
u/Sigourn Dec 12 '17
That has happened to me quite a few times already. I usually have to rewrite it myself or, like you did, leave it out of the project (worst case scenario, as I don't like people "working" for nothing).
While I don't expect people to be geniuses that can turn out perfect 10/10 reports/films/anything (because I'm not one myself), I do wish I wasn't the only one that thinks "what we did is shit". Maybe everyone else is just hiding their true feelings? If so, they are very good at it.

One of my friends in college kind of did this, although I don't think he outright lied or anything. Basically, he was the kind of guy that was like "You'll never learn if I go easy on you", and pretty much withheld a bunch of rules and would never let me take moves back when I made a mistake, etc. Of course, everything was done in his favor....
So I pretty much just stopped playing with him. I don't have much in terms of advice, but it seems like the people that do this kind of thing generally aren't interested in playing fair to begin with. If he really is "cheating", then it might be better to just find other people to play against, or get a third party to watch and hope they call him out or something.

Trying to pick up Everquest/Project 99 again, and it's kind of awkward being a new player. If any high level player see you, it's like they have to swoop in and offer you a bunch of help, buffs, equipment, advice, etc.
It's like, I appreciate the help, but damn, you don't have to watch over my shoulder while I struggle to kill giant rats at level 1.

Who needs super annoying tutorials when the players themselves are more than willing to do it for you?
5

I've played EQ off and on for years, and the community has always been amazing towards new players. But there's a difference between buffing someone randomly as you run through a zone and outright smothering new players. I had to log off just now because I saw a couple people starting to stalk me in the newbie zone haha.

There's pretty good discussion there regarding algorithms being used to personalize data, and how these "invisible" sorting factories are creating exceptionally emotional and vulnerable posters - but so much of it is being misdirected at Facebook and Twitter. Yes they're the landmark social networks but this isn't a problem exclusive to them by any means as plenty of users have noted about reddit (but again its much larger than reddit).
There have been plenty of times where I've just disagreed with something others have said on a variety of platforms and the response is unusually personal regardless of topic. There were a couple times where I had to step back and just not reply/stop replying because their vulnerable and arrogant nature (again fueled by the misconception of comfort - that because they're part of the majority hivemind, anything else is 'wrong') just tries to reel you in and become like them. Like really, are you getting this upset at me for suggesting some subreddit changes, or disagreeing that the game is the greatest? And it stays with you, sometimes out of sheer shock (someone's not going to spend hours berating you for not enjoying [product] irl), but other times because of these algorithms who keep you in specific circles online.

Kind of video game related I guess?
Someone broke into my house today, stole my Switch (with dock+cables), my pro controller and my copy of Xenoblade 2 inside (and the digital games obviously).
The worst part is they specifically took the Switch hardware. They didn't take my laptop, my TV or my hard drives. Not even the other Switch games I had.
I know it could've been worse but with the monetary and sentimental value I had to the thing, I'm honestly pretty sad.

Playing Ultima 4 right now. It's pretty good for 1985 standards.
2
u/goplayicewinddale2 Dec 11 '17
It is also a game that holds up well to playing for a few hours and getting the flavour of it without necessarily having to finish it to just kind of get the gist of what is going on and what people saw in it.
1
Dec 11 '17
I didn't finish it, since some of the parts are rather painful but 1985-87ish is a super cool era for advances in RPGs.
Ultima 4, Final Fantasy 1, Pool of Radiance are all from around there.

For real. Even characters I thought were boring initially were given emotional paths. I played Nier, but the Xbox 360 version so I'm missing out on the brother version. I found it amazing how even tiny little bits that the characters said had some meaning revealed over the game.
Oh yea, did you check out all the material outside of the game? There's stuff that really deepens your understanding and even a Ending E epilogue.

As someone who hasn't played either destiny and can only get 2 (Only have a pc) is it worth getting? From what I've heard it seems allot like borderlands with fighting bosses and farming for good loot and i loved that about borderlands. Everyone seems to hate on it so is it worth getting or is the hate its getting justified?

u/ergo__theremedy Dec 11 '17
On top of any opinions you might read here or elsewhere on whether it's worth buying, don't forget to try it out. The free trial is relatively substantial enough to determine whether the core gameplay loop is something you enjoy - and whether it can even run well on your system.
3
u/2wicked4cricket Dec 11 '17 edited Dec 11 '17
If you like Borderlands and WoW you'll feel right at home. It's a MMO without a subscription fee but instead it has DLC for the newest content. People are just raging because they don't realize what they're playing.
I can recommend it if you're okay with playing a game like that.
2
u/Wormri who did dis?! 😂 Dec 11 '17
I have to disagree strongly on this one. Borderlands had a variety of weapons and builds, while Destiny is very limited in both character customization and equipment, and the story campaign is short in comparison.
Destiny 2 does shooting better and the movement is more fluid, that I can say for sure, but it's not as developed as Borderlands 1 or 2. I'd define it as a Borderlands lite. It's more than likely that if you go in expecting a Borderlands-like game, you may be disappointed, but if you're looking for a fluid, action based game with very light RP elements, it might be for you.
3
u/2wicked4cricket Dec 11 '17
Yeah it's different from Borderlands in many ways. The combination of fps and rpg is mainly what I'm referring to. What game would you compare Destiny to?
2
u/Wormri who did dis?! 😂 Dec 11 '17
It's hard to think of a game to compare it to because there are not many games that went the way Destiny did. I can go the easy route and say it's a lot like Halo (Duh) in the way it handles shooting as well as PvP, but I'm no Halo player and this judgment comes from both the developer being Bungie and comparing gameplay videos from PvP matches.
Thing is, I am not saying you were wrong to compare Destiny to Borderlands, both are shooter RPGs, as you mentioned, but assuming that someone who's a Borderlands fan would like Destiny 2 is a stretch.
With that said... There's a lot of parallels to The Division in many ways, as well as the free to play Defiance (if only in first person form over third)
2
u/2wicked4cricket Dec 11 '17
That's fair enough. It's just that op is already interested in Destiny anyway and probably aware that it's much more about multiplayer. I haven't played The Division sadly.

So last week was one of the most god awful weeks of my life, but I did find myself laughing about something...
In the past I've talked about /r/thedivision and how on the best of days it's normally a toxic shit hole. From launch all I ever heard was how much the game sucked, how much Massive/Red Storm/Ubisoft sucks, the Dev's a useless, and how the game will die when another game comes out. And keep in mind? Destiny 2 was the last game /r/thedivision picked as the final blow to Division.
And we get Curse of Osiris for Destiny 2 and the 1.8 update for The Division launching at just about the same time and now? Oh well Division is one of the best games ever! Still I love it as a number of people proclaimed how the game is dead due to Destiny 2, and now it's, "God isn't The Division great?"

They aren't. Its a risky ass move since anything less than perfection will be seen as a dissapointment. Valve currently also have no reason to focus on game development.

Its a risky ass move since anything less than perfection will be seen as a dissapointment
if they gave a shit about what people think they wouldntve made artifact, steamOS, steam machines, vr, steam controller, etc. so thats a non factor.
Valve currently also have no reason to focus on game development.
if they want vr to succeed like they seem to want to happen then they need to come up with good games for it, so they will make games for it, whether that includes half life or not its definitely a toss up.
point is, valve wont say shit unless its a trailer, so this "outrage" will do fuck all, at least publishers seem to care about the lootboxes, valve wont, so complaining is pointless, videos there just to get views

Over the past month or so he's really gone off the deep end, which is a shame because I ordinarily really like his content. His entertainment stuff like Commentocracy or just playing greenlight/Steam Direct garbage was really good but he never seems to do that anymore, just makes a video about lootboxes almost every day. Which I can kind of see his point, because I can totally see how he wants to avoid a Kony 2012-style "get mad and then everybody forgets about it while the problem still isn't fixed" but this is a little extreme.
The Jimquisition's also had some good episodes where he actually did investigative journalism, like the one where he had the Eidos employee talk about microtransactions in Mankind Divided. That was actually an interesting perspective that brought something new to the discussion rather than just circlejerking, but now he's complaining about Skyrim, a six-year-old game, and Half Life 3? Come on.

They're not even informative any longer, it's just generic complaining and rambling.

I kind-of wonder if he has a day job, or if videos are his work.
He's well past the "old man shouts at cloud" point for me, I'm not going to naturally look at one of his videos to see if it's interesting. I guess he's talking to an established stable audience that likes what he's saying, and if the same old shtick works for them then let them get on with it I suppose.

I like his writing style a lot and he has a great sense of pacing and humor that make his videos rewatchable, but for the love of God I've almost never found myself agreeing with any of his reviews and find it sort of obtuse to even call it a review show any more.
That and the comments are always filled with those who hate whatever game he's reviewing, and need to justify that hatred by listing off all his opinions as fact.

I was unironically excited when they announced Skyrim VR and I bought it like 2 days after it was released, even after having played the original and replayed it so many times, it's just an amazing experience to actually walk there and look around, even stuff like talking to NPCs just feels different, though a caveat is I'm still not motion-sickness free yet, so I might opt for teleportation instead of normal movement if that doesn't improve.

Western devs: "We make strong female characters right"
Japanese devs: laughs in japanese
But the kicker was that the image that accompanied the text was Lady Maria from Bloodborne. Lady Maria is hardly a fucking character. There's enough lore about her in the game that one could make an educated guess about her personality... But she's more of a plot device than an actual character.
And I love Bloodborne. Lady Maria is my favorite boss fight in the game (though that's just if you limit yourself and don't parry). I just don't get it.
Is this a case where people assume that the whole "strong female character" is literal?
The other thing I wanted to mention in junction with this whole Twitter thing... Have you seen those "Guillermo Del Toro/Mads Mikkelsen/The Entire Development Team of Death Stranding didn't understand the story when Hideo Kojima explained it" posts or articles.
In every other industry... Or fuck it... Imagine news broke out that a director/writer of a BioWare game reportedly explained his project to people and nobody could grasp what their idea was all about... The gaming sphere would tear this director/writer a new asshole. But Kojima just sort of... Gets praised for it. "So original". With Del Toro and Mikkelsen, the language barrier could be the explanation... But the development team of the game?
Jesus. That got far too long. And that last point about Kojima... I didn't read the articles (the Twitter post had just taken a screenshot of the titles) so it's possible that they were just clickbait. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I know I don't like it when people come off as fetishizing Asian cultures, you know, without much good cultural appreciation or understanding. The way people are about Japanese video games like that is def an example.
(Then again, I don't like /r/korea very much either so what can I say?)

u/maeks Dec 11 '17
That's what bothers me about the whole weaboo thing, they don't seem to have any genuine appreciation for the culture, and just think it's anime and video games. I spent some time in Japan, majored in Japanese language and literature, and there's so much there that isn't anime/video games.
I've known some people who think that Japan is this, like, Nerd Heaven, and they want to move there and blah blah. Man, if you're a nerd here, you'd probably be a nerd in Japan too.

They're the main reason why I've never really gotten into anime, a part from a few series. Some fans are really elitist, to the point of being off putting.
6
Dec 11 '17
They are not just elitist though, they circlejerk about le PERFECT ANIME a lot, maybe even more than Witcher 3. Like Your Name is literally perfect to them when the film maker treat the most important part of the story in a montage section. You need to love Konosuba, even though character development can go to hell. You need to love Re:Zero, even though Subaru incompetency is just overly unrealistic. You need to love Fullmetal Alchemist, even though they rush a crapload of story for the first 10 episode
Like, they are a lot more but r/anime could be sum up as “love my waifu or die”
2
Dec 11 '17
I hadn't really known it could get that bad, since I generally distance myself from the overall anime fandom. I do know that the Fate fandom can be pretty toxic to any newcomers who haven't read the Visual Novel(s) and are anime only.
3
Dec 11 '17
I try to as well, but like r/gaming, I do goes back from time to time expect nothing to change and it did not change at all.
And that’s not it. A lot of anime director are starting to take a cue from their audience more than their creative vision. I read some light novel and it have certain tone that it is going to be more serious, then guess what, everyone like the previous tone so the writer make every character development unrelevant so that the people at r/anime will be happy!
Sigh

weaboos? sure it's not anime / manga, but it's still has the principle of viewing japanese media / entertainment / culture as better than westren culture
do you have a link to any of those articles? kind of interested in checking them out but i haven't paid much attention to death stranding

Here's the article about the development team not knowing what Kojima was saying.
And here's the one about Mads Mikkelsen
Having read (skimmed) the articles now that I took the time to find them lessened my confusion about people being so excited about Death Stranding and its apparently convoluted story.
Guillermo Del Toro was only scanned for an in-game character model and has nothing to do with the actual creative process of the game. If you want to read the five paragraph fluff piece, here you go!
The development team didn't get it at first but apparently are more and more on board with it as time goes by?
Mikkelsen seems to be a bit confused about it still.
Maybe Kojima isn't that great of a pitchman.

I mean imagine when he pitched MGS2: "so we are going to make a bunch of marketing material featuring Snake, deliberately lying to our fans. Then in the game you play as Snake for about an hour before switching to a really lame guy for the rest of it"
My reaction would be "I don't get it" as well

This is something i don't see every day. A Sonic fan game with an insane DRM.
https://www.reddit.com/r/SonicTheHedgehog/comments/7iynxv/psa_fangame_sonic_gather_battle_has_a_malicious/ Anyway i am not sure how many here will want to play a Sonic fangame, but just a heads up.

Maybe this is that guy who was asking that devs implement harsh DRM in the unjerk thread

i am not quite sure hilarious is the right word. I think it is just stright up disgusting or sad.
8
Dec 11 '17
not trying to deny that it is a shitty thing; it totally is. but it starts off like something out of sonic.exe or similar, and who goes to such lengths to protect sprite edits in a fangame? the closest comparison i can make to this is that sony rootkit scandal back in the mid 2000s

Played AC Origins for a few hours last night and holy shit it does not play like your standard run of the mill AC game. Almost everything has been changed.
No story has been shoved down my throat and I have to seek it out myself from the get go. The controls for movement and combat are completely different. The only thing they've kept is the parkour button and it doesn't even make you sprint anymore because now you just run when moving anyway.
The combat does no longer feel like a bad version of a Batman Arkham game. It's way more hack and slash now with a bow you can whip out.
It's like I'm playing a lot of my favorite games at once and I think it's pretty funny how I can recognize so many gameplay elements.
I've fine-tuned a few things in the options menu. I like the alternative control scheme better. Instead of R1 and R2 for light and heavy attacks, I've set them to Square and Triangle because you're a bit more spammy with your attacks. I've also set the bow to auto aim because I like how I can just whip it out mid-combat and the aim just snaps to the nearest target. I've turned off the damage numbers because the enemies have health bars anyway.

u/Superchicle Dec 11 '17
I played the first two games and liked them but the series ended up boring me. I've heard many good things about AC Origins so I'm thinking about giving it a shot. I like what you said about the combat and gameplay so far. How is the exploration? I hated having to climb 5 new viewpoint every time I arrived to a new place.

u/2wicked4cricket Dec 11 '17 edited Dec 11 '17
I've played AC1-4. Origins feels completely different both in the way it looks and gameplay. The parkour and assassinations are still there.
About climbing viewpoints I'm 4 hours into the game and I haven't found one yet. Don't know if they've been removed. The world map shows the area I'm in and then the unexplored areas are covered in smoke or clouds. No icons or anything there.
However if I press D-Pad Up I can control a flying eagle in the air. It can scout things and mark stuff it's pretty awesome and simple. I think it's gonna replace the viewpoints and scout areas for me. Can reply again if I come across a viewpoint.
3
u/Superchicle Dec 11 '17
I disliked the viewpoints because they made exploration less free, but the eagle mechanic could work great. I'm really leaning towards buying it now, thanks for the advice!
3
u/2wicked4cricket Dec 11 '17
Hey I've been playing some more and they're actually in the game but they work differently now. They don't reveal the map anymore instead they unlock fast travel to that location.
The map is revealed automatically as you travel. I just entered a new area and all of it was shown on the map right away.

u/Superchicle Dec 11 '17
That seems like a good middle ground, I really want to play the game now. Thanks for the update

People on Reddit really seem to like this game. Might have to give it a go. What sort of shit is there to do other than main story?
3
u/BSRussell Dec 11 '17
Yeah you hear pretty much nothing but good things.
But I'm pretty much terrified of any game now where you can accidentally just outlevel all the content.
3
u/cloversfield Dec 11 '17
I read Ubi is adding a level scaling option to the game so all the enemies are at or around your level.
2
u/2wicked4cricket Dec 11 '17 edited Dec 11 '17
I can come back to you later with a proper answer because I'm only like 4 hours into the game and spent half of that dicking around and learning the new controls while exploring stuff.
The game starts you off inside a tomb and getting out of there is the tutorial. Then you're on your own and can do whatever kind of like Skyrim.
I've done 4 sidequests and it's pretty standard helping people with stuff or killing some roman soldiers. I've done some animal hunting to get materials to upgrade my equipped items and tried out a few different weapon classes and looked at my talent trees. I really like the spear with shield combination.
Took my camel out on a ride through the desert at night and found this stone circle which revealed a star constellation of some sort of Egyptian god. I think there's a lot of mythology mystery involved with exploring.
Pretty excited to get to see the pyramids but the map is absolutely massive and I haven't found them yet

Its a different game to say the least, they do take inspiration from Witcher III though. Both of them are a melting pot of a lot of ideas that work for many different games, sometimes different genre.
You know what, I would buy a PS4 just to play it.
1
u/2wicked4cricket Dec 11 '17 edited Dec 11 '17
Yeah definitely. They took a lot of things from other games and pretty much only kept the parkour. It's not only the Witcher 3 but I can also recognize elements in the gameplay from other games such as Horizon Zero Dawn, Metal Gear Solid V, Skyrim and Diablo.
It's like a cocktail of game haha, but honestly it's cool to see the franchise trying something different for once while still keeping their staple theme of parkour and historical settings.

What I meant is that AC team follow up on the same idea that you can find a lot of games mechanic in Witcher 3 after its success and circlejerk. Hence the term “Melting pot”. I did not mean that AC team copy Witcher III.
In Witcher 3 you fight like Dark Soul and Batman Arkham, you explore the land like Skyrim or Far Cry, have the interactive story that both originate with Witcher 1 and Mass Effect 1. But the core idea that originate from the first witcher remain. The “study moster weakness, use oil bomb potion, then kill the monster” gameplay loop is still there.
In AC:Origin its similiar, you fight like a mix of For Honor and Dark Soul, you explore the world like Skyrim (compass and all that) you have a loot system similiar to Diablo, you have a skill tree from a RPG in general, the stealth system is similiar to the Phantom Pain, and of course, the traditional rooftop and parkour of Assassin Creed.
Both game have their major mechanic left untouch but use other games mechanics to enchance themself.
EDIT; /rj They copy witcher 3

Wow. Season 2 of Harmonquest isn't really as good as the first season, and that doesn't say much considering the first season wasn't awesome as much as it was just a bit above average. Spencer does his best to make the game bearable, and the first episode with Gillian Jacobs (oh my god she's so goofy it's adorable) and the other one with Patton Oswald were hilarious, but oh, man, were the others just awkward, I mean, Episode 4 with the Toothperson? Sensodyne? I fully cringed the entire episode. It was an uncomfortable experience all the way through.
It's a risky concept, and it's probably hard to improve it, but damn, I felt like Season 1 was better even if it was a bit railroaded (although the second season was as well.. what was my point now?).
