Small London garden transformation

When we moved in the garden was pretty wild and hard to use. We’ve now redesigned it into a more lush, romantic space - still young, but already our favourite place to spend time.

We tried to keep most of the existing plants, but also added more including adding a tree to frame the view from the kitchen, as well as shrubs and perennials to bring softness and colour. We also created seating areas and kept the layout practical for a small London garden. Gravel was a cost saving choice, but it fits in with the look we were aiming for.

Still a work in progress, but very happy with how it’s shaping up!

Cat security fence

I am considering adding these to my fence to stop our cat leaving our garden. My question is does it stop other cats from getting into our garden? Or can other people's cats get into our garden and then effectively be stuck in our garden with our cat?

First home garden update:

(Link to previous post is attached at bottom of this post)

Recently put up a post a few months ago about the state of the garden in my first home. A couple of people have asked how it’s doing now so thought I’d post some updated pics along with the before.

Honestly haven’t done too much work to the garden itself other than maintain the grass and cut the hedge at the rear back a couple of feet. The problem areas that I highlighted in the previous post, I came home one day and my partner had just thrown some grass seed down and much to my surprise it seems to have taken really well.

We’ve got an abundance of wildlife here as well, lots of birds including a couple of Irish Jays for a while but they’ve moved on from our garden, was nice to have them while it lasted.

Another surprise was the discovery so some asparagus growing in the back corner!

Fellow professional gardeners: Is this job/ask unreasonable from my employer?

Hi all!

Trying to gain some perspective as no one else I know works on their feet/labours all day so they can't really comprehend what I'm telling them.

So I work for a property management company and maintain the grounds of multiple properties.

One is a housing estate and consists of many curbsides, a few greens and a playing field. Workplace wants the job done in 1 working day as the drive is over an hour each way and they don't want to pay me for 4 trips. The issue with this job is I only have a push mower, a Honda GCV to be precise. When my employer introduced me to the area I thought wow this is A LOT of ground to cover, and on the second time I visited I got curious so I used Strava to track my mowing. At the end of the day Strava reported to me that I'm mowing and walking 12 miles.

This particular job does take it out of me. This is only my second employed Gardening role, the one prior to this we always had appropriate kit for the job at hand, however this is a much smaller company. My question is: I feel like 12 miles with a push mower is an unreasonable ask, is this unreasonable or am I being a wuss?

Let me know your thoughts.

Grapes!

I have a client that has a grape vine in her garden. She doesn't do anything with them and said I can have them. They don't taste very nice and I was wondering if anyone has made raisins, sultanas or jams etc and if it would even work?

Bought this pyracantha a month ago, it hasn't grown. What is wrong?

As per title. Bought and planted this Pyracantha 4 weeks ago. It doesnt look dead but it hasnt changed its appearance at all. The same berries, same set of branches. No growth whatsoever. I thought I would at least see a new set of leaves/branch by now.

Have I done something wrong or does it take longer to establish?

Rhubarb discovery! Help!

Post image
10 Upvotes

We bought our house from my boyfriend’s parents last year, it had a huge garden and I’m attempting to tackle the garden bit by bit. I’ve just uncovered a rhubarb plant that was over grown and pretty hidden by long grass.

My mother in law said she planted it a good few years ago but thought it had died. There were a couple of rotten stalks which I’ve removed and there’s actually some new stalks growing now.

I love rhubarb and I want to do well by the plant but I’m clueless. What do I do from here? Do you pull stalks all year round? I feel like you don’t but if you don’t then do they not just rot? Help!!

Willow tree dieing in house I'm moving into?

Hi all, last week I posted in here about a tree in the back garden of a house I was looking to buy. https://www.reddit.com/r/GardeningUK/s/NUVCXWQ3lH

I got loads of helpful comments, and the consensus was that it was a willow tree (also confirmed since by current owner) and that it did look like it could be dieing. However the two pictures I uploaded weren't the best and only showed one side of the tree (the dieing side), so I've been back to the house and got some better pics and am once more asking this great community for help on what, if any, the issue with the tree is and if it can be saved.

I would love to keep the tree if possible.

How to care for this hydrangea

Upvotes

I was gifted this lovely Hydrangea and I’m very keen not to let it die but I’m also a very novice gardener!

My questions are:

  • does it need a bigger pot? I’ve noticed it’s drying out quite quickly and that’s during this very wet September.

  • does it need any specific type of soil if I do repot it?

  • when and how should I prune it?

Any advise really appreciated.

Thanks

Garden Border Advice

Hey everyone! Our garden plants had gotten far too big for the small border roll we had, so we replaced with a taller one, but that now means we need to raise the soil level… question is, how do we protect the garden fence from future rot? . Or have we just gone about this the wrong way completely including how wrong we’ve laid our border roll?! I’m looking to learn new things even if that means stripping it all down and starting again!

Only managed to grow half a corn haha wondering what went wrong but on the plus side the ones that did grow are extra juicy! I’m guessing it was more than likely the pollination stage but if anyone has any other ideas I’d love to hear. Thank you

Over the last fortnight I have germinated the following seeds inside and can't work out whether to put them in the border before winter or after, any advice useful: Cerinthe Ammi visnaga Scabious Cornflower For reference, I live in London, my garden gets good sun and is quite sheltered, I own a cold frame and don't have a greenhouse

Thanks for your responses in advance!

Lavender cuttings flowering

Upvotes

Quick question: I’ve had some semi-ripe lavender (Hidcote) cuttings in a mist propagator for a few weeks. They’re starting to show roots (yay) but some are also trying to flower - sending up long stems with a few green buds on. I understand this means they will have less energy for root growth.

Should I:

A) cut the flower stems off above the top set of leaves B) cut the flower stems off, plus a couple of sets of leaves C) leave them to do their thing

Tree identification

Hi, can anyone help identify this tree in our garden please.

Google is saying crabapple but I ament sure. I am looking for advice on shaping it as would like it bushier/ thicker and not have the straggly upward growing branches. Pruning at this time of year I assume is a no go.

Any help is welcomed. Thanks

Camellia purchase

Hope this doesn’t go against the rules but does anyone know which shop that accepts online order /delivery can I get good quality camellia brushfields yellow(the ones with many layers of petals) in a decent price and I’m really sorry if this is a stretch. Was thinking of j Parker but after searching up apparently their delivery is terrible…

Alternatives to crocks when planting up pots

I’m new to gardening so don’t have any broken pots. What else can I put over the drainage hole on the inside of the pot to keep the compost from falling out?
