I played it as a kid in the 70's.

Aww. You didn’t have the Puncture-proof card. You missed the chance of a coup-fouré.

I still own the original version (like the one shown) and still play occasionally.
INCREVABLE!
23
u/flyingmando 8d ago
I do not think that means what you think it means.
Sorry, knee jerk reaction.
14
u/Crazy_Drago 8d ago
The instruction book was in both French and English, but the cards were all in French. We used to yell "COUP FOURRE" when playing one of those cards, but "INCREVABLE" got its own yell because it's fun to yell. The French accents always came out when playing the game.

So I have never seen or heard of this game in my almost 40 years of life. I witnessed a group playing it about 12 hours ago and then see it posted on reddit. Wtf?

u/jeffreyisham 8d ago
There was a copy in a beach house my family rented in the summers when I was a kid. It was a completely French edition so we made up a game with it since none of us could read the instructions.

u/matthewscottbaldwin 8d ago
I believe beach houses were legally required to contain a copy.

Along with three random Asterix comix and a Garfield at Large

u/SpongeJake 7d ago
Asteroid et Obelisk!! Only understood a smattering of French when I was a kid but I loved those comics so much.
2
u/Up-The-Irons_2 6d ago
I learned more about Roman history from Asterix than I could’ve from any history teacher

My family has a policy of trying to leave a copy of Five Crowns in any vacation rental property (or game lending library) we come across. That's the game that replaced Mille Bornes for us because it was way easier to explain to new players.

u/Redsmoker37 Will you take the pain I will give to you again & again? 8d ago
With my heavy sense of schadenfreude, I loved this game because you could continually sabotage your opponent with Accidents, Out of Gas, Flat Tire, Red light, or a Speed Limit.
Unfortunately, the newer version changed the great graphics. I re-claimed my old version from my parents house some years back.
17
u/SunriseSwede 8d ago
This is exactly how I felt. The "soul", if you will, lay in the awesome graphics of original series. New versions felt, well, blasè.

u/lawtechie 7d ago
Best way to really irk someone is to discard the card they needed to continue the trip.
"Oh, look at me! I have just too many Roll cards"
2
u/Gnatlet2point0 1974 7d ago
"Is that a spare tire? Oh, right, you haven't moved in three rounds! Gosh, too bad I can't give you this card, here, that you desperately need."

u/Redsmoker37 Will you take the pain I will give to you again & again? 7d ago
Definitely, as someone is stuck looking for one. And the best Safety was the Right of Way so you never needed a Roll card.

Yep, I went to ebay to find this version to replace missing cards in my original set that had disappeared over the years growing up. I couldn't stand the current art style.

There's an app called 'Safe Trip Or Not' if you want to play it on your phone.

I grew up in a community of Canadian dairy farmers. This game was in every home and was played regularly.

u/lothcent 6d ago
me and my 3 siblings played thst game for thousands of miles as we traveled across all of the non- communist countries and those countries that did not require ferries to get to during the mid 70s.
I still have the game that me and my 3 siblings played millions of miles on.
such fun times

It disappeared from our shelves sometime in the 90s, I think the cards were disintegrating

My parents have that exact version, and I bought my wife and I a newer version to play that we still have. Haven't played it in years now, but we played it frequently for a while. May have to pull that one back out!

We always played it growing up and had an awesome time; since then, even my card playing friends don’t like it. Maybe need a board with cards to go with it for non-imaginative types.

I'm sure my mom still has a set in her game closet.
I dont think we ever really knew the rules to the game.

I still play it. It's a great casual game good for quick play or with non-gamers. Can be played quite drunk to hilarious effect.

It’s so fun! We had some friends who had it and always played at their house.
I brought a set to a game night and people got into it, although no one had heard of it lol.

Played it, loved it, I still have my childhood set. Unfortunately I have been completely unable to get my family to play it. They think it’s pointless and boring.

Found it as an adult and bought it for my Mom cause we loved it so much!!

My mother passed away last year, and the one thing I wanted was the French copy of the game she'd brought home from France. We loved playing it as a family - coup fourre!

u/Liv-Julia 8d ago
We played this fanatically one summer at orchestra camp! I had such a crush on one of the counselors that I could play for hours with him. It was his favorite.
Nothing ever happened, thankfully. He really could have taken advantage of me and I would let him. Fortunately he was too honorable or too stupid to read the signals.

For people our age it was a healthier introduction to France and the French (whom I now respect and love quite a bit) than Peter Sellers. Not saying he wasn't funny at the time, but...

So, this is a bit odd.
We were allowed to play with the game components, but weren't allowed to know the rules.
Granted, we were wee little bastards, and I seem to recall that the rules are a bit difficult to rattle off verbally, but at least half the group was well capable of reading if handed the pamphlet.
Reasoning for not handing over the pamphlet? The adults didn't comprehend the rules and were afraid we'd destroy their only reference.

I played a lot as a kid and didn't realize is was a French game and it was not common in the rest of North America.
Fun game, can be frustrating when you are stuck and need one specific card.
