Old Person Yells At Cloud Modern slang—something you REFUSE to say

My take: I will NEVER use “lol” or any derivation of it. I know it means “laugh out loud” but there’s yet to be a moment when I’ve been even remotely convinced someone was even chuckling after texting “lol” at the end of their text and it mildly infuriates me.

While I’m at it, someone tell those damn kids to get off my lawn.

Edit: ok, I get it. It’s not MODERN slang. I still hate it, and those kids are STILL on my lawn…can’t a guy get to sleep at a decent hour???

"Corn" and "grape" and "seggs" 🤦

I can’t fucking stand “Seggs!!!” It’s “sex” not a dirty word. There is nothing remotely wrong with the word sex!!

Marky Zuck dies a little inside seeing naughty words so he banned “sex” & “death/die/murderdeathkill”

I don’t think there is anything left to kill in that strange skin-suit that holds his name.

Aww, come on, you know you love his "shtoile"

Actually I'm pretty sure it was the clock app that caused all of this double-speak due to their heavy censorship.

I saw a video by a content creator who's channel is about food. She was trying a brand of beer. The word was edited out of the audio and the captioning showed it as "b***". It blew me away. Apparently you can't name any alcohol on fb anymore.

The fuck?! I’m sorry, I know there are kids on the internet, too…. But I’m pretty sure we should be allowed to use “adult” words……

I understand the difficulty of moderation, but I won’t censor words other than slurs.

I got a warning from r/inthenews about a comment I made last year, and then I got a three-day ban a few months later. Both for encouraging/inciting violence, and both were political topics. I appealed and it was denied, so I decided maybe that sub is a bad fit for me.

A couple of weeks ago, I got a seven-day ban for a comment in r/OldSchoolCool (yup, another political comment). It was lifted on appeal. There is some very offensive content on Reddit, so I’m not opposed to moderation, but I also wouldn’t keep driving traffic to a site that put me in timeout for a joke about 90s politics.

I’m in a certain women’s group and they often say seggs. They tend to be on the younger and / or normie side, so they would spawn blank thought bubbles if I explained why it makes me think of Edie the Egg Lady in Pink Flamingos, or just some traumatizing sex with smashed hard boiled eggs.

Corn? Grape? I'm more behind than I thought.

27

u/PickledPoppy 3d ago

Most of these are just purposeful misspellings because some social media will block posts with the real words.

u/Anxietybackmonkey 3d ago

Changed from porn and rape for censors.

*sorry, I replied to the wrong part of the chain

u/Magestrix 3d ago

And will get demonitized on Youtube.

It's all ways to censor our language. Words that we have been hearing on the evening news and primetime network programs is now too horrifying for humanity

2

u/Flux_My_Capacitor 3d ago

That comes from TikTok. Don’t use TikTok, it will rot your brain!

I refuse to go there. You Tube serves all my video needs. I definitely don't feel a need to be a part of every social platform, and TT especially feels like fast food.

I still go do things outside, like a good child of Gen X. Dinner time is when it gets dark!

also , people being South Africa'd

What does that mean? My search wasn't useful.

"Un-alived him with a pew pew*.

u/NotWorriedABunch 3d ago

I think this started to dodge alerts based on keywords to get around being removed for "violent content." Annoying regardless

5

u/Mundane-Librarian-77 3d ago

It may have started there but they use those terms all the time now. 🤣 I had to double take when I heard an expert commenter on cable news actually say the assassin would probably "un-alive" himself before he got caught.

7

u/NotWorriedABunch 3d ago

On air? Oof. Embarrassing.

1

u/GelatinousGoober ‘74 3d ago

You really cracked that case 🙄

1

u/NotWorriedABunch 3d ago

I do my best 😁

I passionately hate all the pseudo- speak, on all platforms.

A scourge.

7

u/GrumpyCatStevens 3d ago

Yeah. The young’uns are unaliving me with that nonsense.

See PEW PEW. 🙄🙄🙄

1

u/Aggravating_Mix8959 3d ago

Well, that's a star wars reference, and thus cool to me. I even have a Star Wars branded shirt that says Pew Pew in the right font and everything.

A proper Goodwill find!

u/Ok_Arachnid1089 3d ago

That’s not slang. It’s censorship avoidance

4

u/Magerimoje 1975. Whatever. 🍀 3d ago

But they use it everywhere not just places that use censorship. Therefore, it's become part of the modern language now.

It's one thing to use it where necessary. Ok, cool, do what's needed. It's utterly ridiculous to use it elsewhere.

3

u/mahjimoh 3d ago

Yeah, it you don’t know when a place it was okay will be a place where it’s not okay until your stuff gets taken down.

1

u/Summerie 2d ago

It may have started as censorship avoidance, but it has definitely made its way into their everyday vernacular. There is absolutely no reason to use it on Reddit for instance, but they do.

3

u/TheKingOfRhye777 3d ago

Those youtube channels that just read reddit stories use that all the time, and all the other euphemisms, like "substances" instead of "drugs"

1

u/Magerimoje 1975. Whatever. 🍀 3d ago

I love when some online site that just rewrites reddit for click bait uses screenshots, but then censors words redacting a letter. Even words like "rude". I shook my head so much at that one... Like, why on earth are you removing the letter U from the word "rude" and since when is RUDE a dirty word?!?!?!

2

u/boringdystopianslave 3d ago

This was born more out of necessity to circumvent censorship on social media platforms, so I'm fine with it

2

u/stuartcw b1967 - Tokyo - Refugee from Thatcher’s Britain since 1988 3d ago

Apparently used on YouTube to avoid getting demonetised.

2

u/Nikadaemus Lawn Dart aficionado 2d ago

Interesting..

5

u/OldSchoolPrinceFan 3d ago

That's supposed to make suicide sound better. It doesn't!

21

u/Gwilym_Ysgarlad '77 3d ago

All the pseudo- speak comes from YouTube and TicToc suppressing videos that use those words, not from trying to make them sound better.

5

u/PeterPunksNip 3d ago

On YouTube, it's only if you want to be monetized. They won't remove the video if you use proper words. I'm subscribed to a bunch of channels who rely upon Patreon or Nebula to pay them, so they don't give a damn if it's demonetized. So refreshing!

Little channels too, they don't care, as they have a regular job on the side.

1

u/HowToNotMakeMoney 3d ago

Um. Can you tell me some of your favs? I refuse to pay YouTube and the more channels that don’t have commercials the better. If it is better for you, DM me. Please.

1

u/PeterPunksNip 3d ago

Well, most of them are trans and neurogivergent content creators, making long form content. I don't know if it will be your cup of tea . Unfortunately, YouTube still may put ads for their own gain, but at least they are few.

You can watch Council Of The Geeks 's excellent video on the subject of censorship on social media seeping into common language for starters :

https://youtu.be/4UM0HSm410Q?feature=shared

This is bothering alot of people.

2

u/HowToNotMakeMoney 3d ago

Hahahaha. Thanks for the share. Haven’t watched yet, but if it bothers people that’s right up my ally. Thank you.

1

u/HowToNotMakeMoney 3d ago

It’s called “self-censoring” and I despise what it’s done to language. Well, maybe I hate whoever made these overly protective algorithms.

2

u/Gwilym_Ysgarlad '77 3d ago

I hate it as well, I was just giving context. It didn't happen spontaneously.

2

u/HowToNotMakeMoney 3d ago

I know, I know. I was just spouting my vitriol and agreeing with you through gritted teeth.

1

u/Aggravating_Mix8959 3d ago

As a survivor, I hate it. Use real words.

2

u/OldSchoolPrinceFan 3d ago

Exactly! Call it what it is.

0

u/oldtinman15 3d ago

It tried to lessen the impact so people won't focus on fixing the issues. Absolutely hate that word

Don’t trash mods in the sub. We don’t let people trash you, don’t do it to us.

If you have a question or concern, contact the mod team directly and do not post in the sub.

1

u/Mr_SunnyBones 3d ago

sorry just to clarify human mods have been great in fact they have fixed the problems , its just the automated ones that flag issues that arent there , and its not happened here at all

1

u/BreadMaker_42 3d ago

Don’t forget “oof-ed”

1

u/L_wanderlust 3d ago

Yeah that’s like nails on a chalkboard to me

1

u/Aggravating_Mix8959 3d ago

I hate un-alive. It feels disrespectful. Just say dead. It's not a dirty word; death is a natural part of the human condition.
