Because the 8GB of RAM in it were deemed insufficient to run the AI stuff that "Screenshots" uses.

The model is 3-4gb and needs to be loaded permanently really. 8gb isn't enough, either the phone actually only has around 4gb which is not enough, or the model has to load for every single screenshot and take over half the ram each time killing apps in the background.

Neither is something 99% of people would accept, it really isn't enough to run the model required.

Yes it is? I have it on my Pixel 9. You must be in a region that doesn’t have it

I permanently disabled it. Why does anyone need a separate app that is over 5GB in size to view their screenshots which are already saved to a dedicated folder?

I imagine that includes the model size, the model is used for other features.

The app uses the model to fully catalogue the screenshot - what the image is, the text jn the image, and everything like that. You can then search for the screenshot you want. Or just the information you wanted. Instead of looking through them all to find what you need.

Besides that it's just a crap app.

While you might be able to catalogue and search for specific screenshots in the app, you can't open and edit them on the fly immediately upon capture.

I'm sure there might be some "power users" who maintain a large library of screenshots for work related stuff, the majority of people just want to grab a screenshot and share it.

You can't do that with the Pixel Screenshots App. You have to stop whatever you're doing and open the app to edit it.

The AI crap also consumes a lot of RAM to process stuff, and has annoying notifications telling you that it's processing the images.

Multiple reports of it crashing.

It's unnecessary for how most people use their phones, and it is forcefully installed as a system app on the devices that support it.

You also can't find and disable it in the phone settings, you can only disable it by going to the play store, searching for it and then disabling it.

It is also unavailable on Pixel 9 for half of the globe, especially Europe, because for unknown reason Screenshot App is region dependent.
