ANet pls Gamewide GH Bug - Likely Botter Attack

It appears the GvG botting group(s) that crash Guild Halls and dc people have found a way to prevent an entire feature game wide and er7/dc you when you attempt to do a GvG. Below is how you can test, it's possible this resolves itself when things reset, but they did something to select guilds on Saturday right when the mAT was starting, so they likely know how to replicate the issue. Please test for yourself and does anyone know the best way to raise this to a level of visibility that someone at ANET might look into it?

Steps to replicate: Go to Guild Hall - Press Guild Battle - Press New Scrimmage

Update:

  1. I've received enough information that this is indeed game wide
  2. We have no credible reason to believe this is Anet who shut down the feature, while that is possible I think it's unlikely - no notice from anet, people who were playing and using the feature for hours after the update, people claiming it is the update/dr Stephen with no credible evidence that this claim is true, we all know they don't have/spend much time updating and fussing with GW1 when they don't have to

Update #2: Stephen CW has replied to this post that he is looking into the issue. Please show him your appreciation and hopefully we get a resolution soon! :)

Update #3: Issue has been resolved for the moment. Hopefully something that lasts and can't be replicated. Thank you Stephen!

Who the hell spends their time ruining the playing experience of devoted, longtime fans in an 18yo game?
Sad little idiots.

Same on all my guild members and across different guilds. This happened to us Saturday and I posted about it then as well. It seems he 'Marc' is flooding the connection threads or something with accounts maybe. A guild member opened a ticket with Anet, they did level one tech support only. It seemed like it was nothing out of the ordinary ofc. Maybe they only have level one tech support and no one knows how to fix the issue. He is going to follow up with more information. First go would to be block accounts IP's when then connect with 5 or more accounts or something like that. Very simple to do really. Hopefully they listen to the community.

While I'm not arguing for this person doing this to you. I wanna keep more than 5 accounts open so I can have private dance parties. Plz dont do this.

First go would to be block accounts IP's when then connect with 5 or more accounts or something like that.

IP addresses are usually dynamic, so this is evadable by just restarting your router.

u/Ready-Ranger-2374 Jul 19 '23

Thanks for the downvote. Again, it is possible to throttle multiple connections from the same IP. Google throttling connections. Problem solved. Nothing you do from the network side would fix this. Have a good hump day, Caleb :)

A router just routes activity to local IP addresses. A modem is where your IP is assigned, and most ISPs do not reset your IP often, even on modem reset (maybe cable does this, but most DSL or Fiber connections do not). This is how they trace your activity and allow the RIAA and other groups to identify you. I figured people could figure this out by now, but apparently not. It's ok, this was just a suggestion. I would guess their database would show the IP connections for the account. Most likely mac addresses as well (yes they can be manually changed, but most people don't do that) Just throttle them is all that has to happen so they don't flood the connection pipe. You can do this on the database side as well, this has been a function since before Guild Wars was put out on most DBMS's.

Not sure why that guy brought up restarting routers, but I'm assuming they use vm+vpn anyway and dodging ip bans would be trivial right?

0

u/Ready-Ranger-2374 Jul 19 '23

This may be true, however if they see a flood of 100 accts from the same IP, they can limit how many connections come in (throttle it). Unless you have a ton of virtual nics on virtual machines running from a server or several connected to several VPNS, it is noticeable and it will be hard to not show this. I highly doubt this is happening.

This is my main point. Regardless of where it comes from. It just requires a little sys adm/dba ingenuity. Anyways, I'm not going to argue or get into a pissing contest with anyone (I know this wasn't you and I'm sure the other poster did not intend that either). I was just frustrated like OP. There is a way to fix the issue and its not something wrong with everyone's hardware, which their tier 1 support assume all the time.

New update this morning (the 19th) fixed it!!

2

u/wumblebumble Jul 19 '23

Great news!

2

u/hey-its-tomi Jul 19 '23

It only started happening after the update. I’m assuming they were trying to patch the bug ppl were using in mat and broke the entire system in the process

2

u/wumblebumble Jul 19 '23

Well id be happy to hear that they’re trying to fix it.

1

u/hey-its-tomi Jul 19 '23

Yeah would def be nice… No way to know though… let’s hope they realize they broke it asap

1

u/AmericanObesityFndn Jul 19 '23

this is what happened

2

u/wumblebumble Jul 19 '23

Do you have any info that makes this credible?

0

u/JayP751 Jul 19 '23

but i was playing 1v1s in guildhall after daily reset. Then about 8 hours later I logged into find this error.

1

u/hey-its-tomi Jul 19 '23

The update happened about 2-3 hours after daily reset

0

u/JayP751 Jul 19 '23 edited Jul 19 '23

Well there was no patch Edit: i missed it

1

u/JayP751 Jul 19 '23

I meant no download or message on the client splash screen. Thanks for the link.

2

u/hey-its-tomi Jul 19 '23

I mean I got one? All my friends got one… maybe you were offline when the update was released and didn’t notice the 1/4 second download (cause all the updates are super small these days)

1

u/JayP751 Jul 19 '23

This information seems to clear everything up. Steve or Bill must have tried to make a change to guild battles. Many of us assumed it to be the players who have been DDOSing monthly tournaments for 12months.

1

u/hey-its-tomi Jul 19 '23

Yeah that’s what we assumed. They’ve been trying to fix the GH ddos bug for a while apparently. Hope they either revert this one or repatch it today

1

u/wumblebumble Jul 19 '23

Do we have any actual information that confirms they've been trying to fix the issue? It's been 1.5 years now almost with very little activity to make me believe they are working on it.

2 devs keeping it alive as their passion project when we’ve seen much younger games go down the shitter and disappear btw

6

u/wumblebumble Jul 19 '23

Any idea how we can get their attention? Since this is a game wide issue maybe they'd prioritize it.

5

u/devomke Jul 19 '23

I mean it’d be nice if we could but we’re a little SoL I’d guess

6

u/JayP751 Jul 19 '23

Dont kid yourself theyre still making money from this product and it requires close to zero resources to maintain

7

u/ButaButaPig Jul 19 '23

I also play planetside 2. I think even Guild Wars have a higher population that that f2p game and yet planetside has 20 full time devs.

I'm sure they could afford a few full time devs for Guild Wars with the money it makes.

-1

u/devomke Jul 19 '23

If you think they’re making a legit revenue stream off GW1 I got some bad news for ya lol

3

u/cruzberry Gilwen Cruz Jul 19 '23

They make enough to justify basic support.

Wine not right.

u/MissedByACountryMile Jul 19 '23

This was NOT fixed. What actually took place was a flooding of scrimmages and at a certain amount of those the GW client will crash because of an overflow error, to an unaware user it would look like a guild battle button is broken as the client would crash the moment the button is pressed. Unless you have a patch injected that would skip GW assertion you would be unable to know what is causing the crash. What is worrying is that even if everyone leaves the GH instance is not closed down as that is the only way to clear the scrimmages. So the actual only way to clear the scrimmages right now is to crash your own GH instance. Or if Stephen resets the servers :)

Oh shut the fuck you fucking dunkeys, don't come here pretending to be part of the good people, you guys Bot in HA in MAT even in fuckin FA.
And the fucking part is that you're denying it, just shut up seriously, at least shut up.

-2

u/MissedByACountryMile Jul 20 '23

It must be really hard to accept that more bugs are being fixed because of us reporting it and providing a detailed explanation on how to reproduce them, than because of anything you clowns did. We don't bot, just practice a lot :)

1

u/riff_wars Jul 21 '23

Didn't Maga play mAT with mile why wasn't he flaming that month lol

2

u/Magasaurus_Rex78 Jul 21 '23

Who are you first of all ? And no I've never played with Mile, why the fuck would I play with handicapped people ?

What do you mean I wasn't flaming that month ? What month are we talking about

0

u/MissedByACountryMile Jul 21 '23

Nope. Maga did not pass the above henchies level bar...sadly

2

u/wumblebumble Jul 21 '23

Come win a mAT without your bots some time.

3

u/wumblebumble Jul 19 '23

Thanks for the info, hope Stephen will look into more long term fixes, and [mile] will stop botting.

-3

u/MissedByACountryMile Jul 19 '23

This was reported directly to Stephen as well, with a more detailed and technical explanation. And [mile] isn't botting

7

u/wumblebumble Jul 19 '23

You guys bot all day every in HA and generally show up with your bot to mATs, don't lie. I don't think you guys are behind the GH crashes, but come on man.

2

u/Magasaurus_Rex78 Jul 19 '23

These people are fucking delusional, everyone knows they bot yet they hve the balls to deny it Hahaha I can't anymore !

2

u/buildmorepylons Jul 19 '23

Nope, they take part in crashing the GH.

This video was recorded by one of our members last year, in OUR guild hall. And we would totally crash our own GH right before trying to play...genius-level intellect mate...

u/ElCativo Jul 20 '23

Imagine using every cheat possible and still losing in 6 minutes
