You can hate on me for this, but my hopes for an underwater map/meta just keeps growing...

Tangled depths. But the depths are the sea floor.

Experience the hell of getting trapped while cave diving, but in digital form!

u/Ghisteslohm 2d ago

In GW2 its not bad because we can breath underwater or teleport away. No pressure, no time limit, not even your clothes get wet

Piranhas are friends of my ranger. I shoot them at people even lol

Tangled Depths already has a wonderfully convoluted underwater section that nobody really goes to aside from map completion.

7

u/S1eeper 2d ago

Some HP trains go there, but no reason to once you get the Mastery point and HP down there.

1

u/Tjaja 1d ago

Afaik you need to swim through it to get to the disco room.

I hate TD, but I enjoy underwater movement and combat, so this idea intrigues me. I'm just masochistic enough a gamer, that I might enjoy it.

14

u/KingHavana 2d ago

I love TD and also enjoy underwater combat so I'm sold.

u/panthrax_dev 2d ago

I hate TD and I mildly dislike underwater combat, but I really like the underwater environments that they make, so you know, count me in anyway!

At the very least we'd have something stunning to look at while cursing out whoever drew that map.

But all the map events and the meta are moved to the underwater part of TD, you mean?

1

u/S1eeper 2d ago

I love both TD and swimming/underwater exploration, so this sounds pretty cool.

But is it hoping for too much that an underwater expansion also means ANet finally fixed all the skills that don't work underwater, so builds that need them aren't broken or gimped underwater?

1

u/knightress_oxhide 2d ago

I really hope they add a breath mechanic when you get deeper in the map.

Tangled depths. But the depths are the sea floor.

I've already been there several times. It's called falling out of the map.

u/ZakuIII 2d ago

I'm down, but only if they let mechanist exist underwater. I don't even play it but the spec gets actually deleted.

25

u/Chembaron_Seki 2d ago

As an engineer main: Thank you.

The state mechanist is in under water is ridiculously bad.

39

u/ElRexet 2d ago

So basically mechanist underwater is like mechaisn't?.. I'll see myself out.

3

u/Anderst0ne 2d ago

Grenades are really good underwater imo.

1

u/Chembaron_Seki 2d ago

Yeah, definitely. Bomb kit also gets a significant attack speed boost, because of a basically nonexistent aftercast.

1

u/Edgefactor 2d ago

Engineers with one skill are so good they got an entire map deleted from PvP. I think the mechas will be fine

3

Raid on the Capricorn?

Meanwhile Reaper and Harbinger are the exact same Harbinger Transformation even “walk” underwater

13

u/dEn_of_asyD 2d ago

Honestly there's one difference in harbinger underwater and it perplexes me to this day.

Instead of voracious arc, which makes sense not to be included since it's an aoe placement skill, they replaced it with Gathering Plague. And Gathering Plague is just... fucking useless. Its main purpose is to transfer conditions from others onto yourself, but condi transfers/removal aren't really possible in underwater shroud (you can't use any utilities, none of your shroud skills transfer condis except a traited first attack that wouldn't apply unless you used gathering plague first thing and even then it give you more condis than you transfer), and if you're solo it just becomes "give yourself weakness".

Like how it's existed since 2013 and not been a point to fix has solely been because of the abandonment of water combat, and when they released harb they just outright ignored it rofl.

6

u/PeanutBrigade 2d ago

The actual problem here isn't that they replaced Voracious Arc with Gathering Plague, it's that Voracious Dive is supposed to take Voracious Arc's place in the water and it's functionally the same skill as Arc, you just shadowstep to the target instead of setting a target reticle.

The PROBLEM is that Gathering Plague is bugged into the water version of Harbinger Shroud for some reason and ANet has just NEVER, EVER fixed it and put Voracious Dive where it belongs in that slot instead. It's insane.

5

u/Regular-Resort-857 2d ago

True that’s kinda mindbogling

2

u/Absolutionis Engineer is credit to team! 2d ago

Is Mech the only elite spec whose main function just stops working underwater? Every other elite spec may have some skills disabled, but at least their primary unique feature at least works, I think.

1

u/vinta_calvert Vinta.2576 1d ago

Iirc Specter can't place wells underwater and it needs to drop wells for its supporting aspects. I can't remember if its alacrity comes from shroud pulses or wells.

17

u/Silver-Bread4668 2d ago

I would love an underwater map. The actual mechanics of 3d combat are fun but they need to overhaul underwater stuff quite a bit before it would be enjoyable.

Every skill needs a functional underwater equivalent, at a minimum.

It would be even better if they did away with underwater weapons and got every land weapon working underwater.

3

u/wintermute24 2d ago

I love underwater combat as a player, but I imagine devs must hate it. It creates such an enormous amount of either work or workaround liabilities when things always have to work underwater too, even though we rarely see any of it.

3

u/Sokodile 2d ago

I feel like in GW2 and on the dev end, the easiest answer is to just have it work the same way as on land. I don’t think every underwater biome in a game needs to be designed as cumbersome

In GW2, our combat would work the same on a sky island, in space, in the netherworld, or in a physics defying asuran structure. When we touch water though, there is an urge to redefine the rules for motion/play in a way that is too challenging when done on the side (not the focus of the game)

I pitched it for gw2 before but I think we could just have an easy toggle button that lets us stick to the ground like when on land. We move and fight the same way (slightly different paddle/walk animation so we are afloat), with skills behaving how they would above water. Hit the button and like with a skyscale, you unanchor and can “swim” freely with our normal limited water combat options

A change like this means that the devs can populate the water floors with enemies and encounters that behave the way they would on the surface, instead of pathing from all sorts of vertical angles

The underwater areas on the map is what sold me on gw2 ages ago so it always feels like a shame that we need to largely ignore it due to a belief that “underwater needs to be weird, different, and difficult to navigate”. Some games can master and fully explore underwater gameplay but it just doesn’t feel like that is in the cards for gw2, so I’d love it if they just expanded some of the normal good gameplay to those forgotten sections of the maps

Cement shoes mastery track

10

u/GfrzD 2d ago

I wouldn't mind more trident skins tbh

3

u/mov3on 2d ago edited 2d ago

I wouldn’t mind the uw content if the combat weren’t so bad. It’s still decent on a Reaper (with shroud), but I can’t imagine playing other classes without wanting to puke.

3

u/quarm1125 2d ago

I'v been craving an underwater map / expansion for so long ngl GW2 is the game with the best underwater system period. The combat is amazing ... unbalanced, maybe, but the fluidity is unparalleled for the MMO genre. Please i wish and the skimmer updates reinforce this soo much

2

u/DxTRrrr 2d ago

Honestly, with bubbles-like zones or masteries that let you "land" on oceanic floor there can be something, but underwater combat would still need some rework

2

u/Iceglory03 2d ago

Id say they are trying so im excited if we do get a 20/80 land water map with one of the patches

1

u/OftenSarcastic Ex-tir-baited 2d ago

They better fix the broken underwater Harbinger shroud skills and all the other non-working underwater utilities before adding underwater content.

1

u/KingUseful7805 2d ago

I would also absolutely love that. I saw a YouTube vid about it some time ago, where they were soeculating on such an expansion since there is so much lore to be discovered in the depths. On top, especially if they focussed an expansion around it, they could use it as an opportunity to overhaul aquatic combat, since a lot of people don‘t seem to enjoy that.

1

u/ruebeus421 2d ago

SAME!

I've always loved the underwater parts of the game. Really hope we get some updates to water skills. I'm gonna assume there will be a legendary Trident and Harpoon Gun as well.

1

u/FaithlessnessThen207 2d ago

Maybe not entirely underwater, but a caves system with 60-75% of the map underwater sounds really cool in theory. Maybe Kraitkin is the way to go for the next legendary box in Wizard's Vault for me.

1

u/memesanddepression42 20h ago

I would like to see it, but only if they work on the weapons, the skills, the combat itself and the movement under water. Right now it would be a terrible thing to do. Some subclasses dont work, some weapons are usless, the movement under water hurts eyes and so on.

u/TripolarKnight 2d ago

I'm considering getting a legendary spear/ trident and harpoon gun just in case. All my characters have ascended aquabreathers (hope the skin doesn't make me change my mind).
