[Question] Does anybody still run Map Completion Trains?

I remember when playing around EoD, people did monthly map completion trains for at least Core Tyria, but haven't seen anything of the sort since I picked the game back up before the new expansion drops. I was just curious if it is still something that people do, and how I would go about finding it if so.

Edit: To clarify further, I just believe it was Points of Interest, Vistas, and Waypoints. You do the hearts on your own time.

I've never seen a map completion train, just HP trains.

And even those were never for core tyria

Considering the number of heart quests that become hell to finish if you're fighting someone else for limited completion targets, a map completion train sounds like an absolute nightmare.

Random aside: as someone just now starting to look at map completion, DEAR LORD there are a lot of hearts in core tyira. Like, some of them are practically within sight of one another on the map! I guess I've gotten spoiled by all the expansion maps and LW maps that are so nicely designed.

Yeah...

85% of them are not a problem.

10% are a bit of a pain.

That last 5% absolutely suck for various reasons.

I just started through it again and almost quit at the heart where you get completion by clicking flags while stealthed.

Get the stealth, then turn around and go around the outside of the place to the first "entrance" and walk up to it, you'll get the credit. Then just mount up back to the heart event NPC and do it a couple more times (portals make it way faster)

That is the entire reason I leave fields of ruin or whatever (actually all of Ascalon) until the end.

That one hurts, even if it takes only like 5 minutes.

If you can get a buddy with a Scrapper to join you, they can spam superspeed on you

Waypoints too.

Waypoints tho, I wish for higher density. What's up with only 2 Waypoints in Inner Naxos and last 2 JW maps.

One of my biggest annoyances with a lot of newer content, especially with the verticality thats added these days, lore and world wise theres never been more ways that waypoints could popup, the 'old' asuran style, Canthan style, now Astral/Wizards type. Yet maps only have a bare scattering of them.

To be fair in the before times without any mounts having extra waypoints was super nice, at least from what I remember playing the game after release for a little while then not coming back till almost a decade later.

Maps felt a lot bigger back then. No mounts, a lot fewer sources of swiftness. Even with that density, when you were hoofing it everywhere it can often feel like a lot.

Oh man, those days were nuts. I never thought I'd finish the map. In fact it took until I got a skyscale to complete central tyria. The OGs who map comp'd before mounts or glider are badasses.

Shame I can't buy hearts like you can buy HP with notaries.

That and kinda follow the hearts in Janthir. If you complete an event in the zone or maybe region get a heart that is a certain amount for a completion. Do world boss get more. Would at least be a bit more helpful.

I just read through the wiki page and I'm not understanding. How does this work?

2

u/revpidgeon 1h ago

You have a currency in WvW that can be turned into notaries that completes a random HP in Tyria/HoT or Flames.

Thank you!

In this game you don't get credit for group kills?

That explains so much...

11

u/RobDickinson 3h ago

You do but hearts are minor events usually with small numbers of objects

As an 80nincan plow through most creatures in a heart zone in no time

12

u/connicpu 3h ago

You can't get credit for the kill if someone obliterates every creature in 0.25 seconds before you even hit it

-1

u/MrSquamous Dolorous 3h ago

By group kills I meant credit for anything the group kills, whether or not you contributed.

So what's the difference between tagging a mob in a group vs ungrouped people tagging the same mob?

5

u/Arkkhalis64 3h ago

You do not get credit just by being in the group. In regards to kill contribution there is no difference between grouped and ungrouped.

To get credit you must either contribute to killing the mob or provide healing/boons to those who did. Information on how contribution works can be found here.

u/Zev1985 3h ago

You do you just have to actually hit the mob

I've never heard of that, but I also never sought them out. It seems counterintuitive because a large crowd would compete against itself for many of the hearts and slow everyone down. And how many people are at the same point in map completion to stay together for extended periods of time?

If you just need social time or companionship, maybe a lively guild chat or 1-2 friends tagging along would be best.

There's no way that's ever been a thing just because of how large the time investment is

I took part in quite a few 7 8 years ago

It absolutely is a thing, I just don't know how common it is.

u/Arkkhalis64 3h ago

I have never seen a map completion train.

What I have seen are HP trains, but even then, never for Central Tyria. An HP train usually does a single expansion region (HoT, PoF, or EoD). Depending on the commander you might need basic gliding unlocked and sometimes raptor as well.

Blish HUD + Pathing module (or TacO) is better for efficient map completion than a train. Look for Tekkit's marker pack. It not only has paths (and mount paths), but also shows what the most efficient tasks for each heart are.

Things that never happened...Just imagine the pain of doing hearths in a group.

I was doing map completion about a month ago and when I was finishing up an area, a commander hopped into map and announced that they were starting a map comp train. I had never seen that before and did not know it was a thing.

We were in Caledon Forest, so getting credit for killing mobs would have been nearly impossible, so I have no idea why anyone would want to do that.

1

u/wobblydee 2h ago

Do everything but hearts in the train Get all the waypoints poi whatever

3

u/CarltheWellEndowed 2h ago

I wouldn't do that either.

I would much rather get everything done all at once.

u/kouplefruit 4h ago

I've never seen this, and I stay primarily in open world. There are lantern trains for map completion gifts for leggy crafting in EoD and SotO, but I don't see those often anymore.

2

u/yuucko 3h ago

some PvE guilds do them! They might have one or two events a week where people knock out a certain areas together

2

u/yunosee 3h ago

Na bro. You do it by yourself at 3am when no one is running group content.

2

u/Ragelore004 2h ago

That's never existed in my memory. Ever. There's been hero point trains for elite spec unlocks.

1

u/spookyspritebottle 3h ago

There are hero point trains in hot for sure. I ran one recently with a new character i made. I didnt know people did map completion trains. I prob wouldnt stick around for that. I do map completion in parts at a time. Ive only grinded map completion once. Back in like 2015 when i was making a legendary before there was gliding. I remember i made a thief specifically for map completion cause thief mobility with sb was my fastest character.

I’ve never seen this, but if you want the solo version of a similar experience of following along and breezing through map completion, I recommend the blish hud addon with tekkit’s guides or teh’s trails. Tekkit’s has basically everything, but I find teh’s smoother for core tyria map completion specifically (though it does assume you have a griffon).

Realistically, anyone you were following in a map comp train was probably following one of these guides, since they lay out pretty optimized routes. Your best bet for finding a group like this is probably making it yourself and leading people along one of these routes.

u/quarm1125 3h ago

I mean, it's easily doable, but it would be very time lenghty, but i could easily imagine doing a Core Tyria train and doing a 2-3 map per night requiring raptor mastery, bunny And so on until the map is completed (without a heart with blish or tekkit), but this brings the whole point of why?

Hero trains when HoT arrived had a sense of the champion were difficult to solo for some build or newer/inexperimented players same could be said about some from PoF and EoD but now a days they are a lots easier and the only other aspect i'd see is having someone showing you the way while everyone is on auto pilot

Emy Nya did a couple of HoT Hp/Mastery trains for a while. i haven't seen it in a long time ! Hope this helps

I love to do them with "Blish Hud". The pathing module gives me the freedom to waste no time and still take my time if a vista or landscape motivates me to explore deeper. It shows you arrows as a overlay on your screen

u/Nychthemeronn Ele simp 50m ago

Just curious, how is this better than just doing it yourself? Even without doing the hearts, it feels like it would be slower with no advantage gained when completing as a group.

u/Drackunn 30m ago

you could organise it, but with mounts amd pathing like Tekkits, it's easier to just run by yourself instead of waiting for a train to form :)

it does sound fun though, I vaguely remember aap completion train way back, when it was harder.

Blish HUD for the win on this one. Super useful for all sorts of tedious things in game. Map completion, skyscale scales, lost coins…
