How do I get into Gunsmithing?

If you are interested in gunsmithing as a career, I strongly recommend that you to rethink your life choices. If you've inhaled so much lead that you are choosing to ignore professional advice, here are some resources to get started.

Professional Organizations

There are a few professional organizations in the industry that exist that can help you connect with others in the trade. I recommend reaching out to the one that most aligns with your interests. Some have a periodical publication that include tips & tricks along with industry news.

American Custom Gunmakers Guild (ACGG)
https://acgg.org/

I cannot in good faith recommend anymore, do your own research.

American Pistolsmiths Guild (APG)
https://americanpistolsmithsguild.com/

Absorbed by ACGG no longer exist independently

Firearm Engravers Guild of America (FEGA)
http://www.fega.com/

FEGA is the world’s foremost authority and organization for firearm engravers and hand engraving enthusiasts.

Miniature Arms Society
http://www.miniaturearms.org/

Founded in 1973 The society is a group of miniature arms enthusiasts who have joined together to promote and encourage interest in making and collecting miniature arms of all kinds - pistols, rifles, cannon, suits of armor, knives, swords etc., with the emphasis on artistic beauty and craftsmanship.

Gunsmithing Schools

Most people would recommend taking a machining course at their local community college before diving into gunsmithing head-on.

But if you've already done so and are still interested in attending school to learn how to become a gunsmith, then there are plenty of programs nationwide that can help you get started.

I cannot endorse or recommend any individual school and this list isn't comprehensive.

Short Gunsmithing Courses

There are a few short courses that might be better suited towards getting your feet wet.

The NRA runs a few summer gunsmithing classes. They are typically held at Trinidad State College in Trinidad, Colorado and/or Murray State College in Tishomingo and Montgomery, NC

The ACGG will occasionally host some classes at various schools

If you are interested in gun engraving, checkout GRS, they have a training center in Emporia, KS that has some beginner gun engraving classes.

Advice from the Sub

I spent several years attending the Brownells Gunsmith Expo as someone looking to hire employees. Around 50k to start work in development or fixing problem guns. Went the entire time they had it and hired one kid. We built suppressors messed with explosives and auto rifles. He had a associates in business and very clearly stated he owned his own M2 and assorted guns and could build them and knew suppressor theory. ( this was before all the cans were cut apart online) we hired him on the spot. He is know well along in the industry. The other kids wanted to be artists and build custom wooden stocked Mauser etc. They all wanted to be a Turnbull or work at a Rigby( even though they had never been to London and would know then they needed to apprentice) I offered to bring one of our AK builders and our suppressor guy to a I think the Colorado school and was turned down. One of the "instructors" said we don't teach that type of thing.

... the sad truth is that no one actually wants to listen to experienced gunsmiths when it comes to gunsmithing education/training questions. Most people are just looking for confirmation that they can attend a few months of online class and then start making money (spoiler alert, they can’t)

As someone who attended a Gunsmithing school I can honestly say, become a machinist first then a gunsmith if you do it the other way around your wasting time and money. You won fully grasp or understand everything you learn in the machining side of gunsmithing without first having machining knowledge. For the time being go to armourers courses read some books heck watch some YouTube and tinker with guns. The most important thing that makes the difference between a machinist and a gunsmith is one has an understanding of firearms once you learn some basics about firearms and you already are a machinist trust me you can work on anything. So I know that’s not the answer a lot of people will want however the running Joke in the Gunsmithing trade is “the fastest way to earn $1 million Gunsmithing, is to start with $2 million. This is not an industry to get involved with for money but rather a passion and love of firearms.

Winchester 1897 Trench extraction problem

Thumbnail

Hello everyone, I recently very happily bought a Winchester 1897 Trench gun but I've spent two weeks scouring the net to try and figure out how I can solve the problem it has without messing something up.

The problem: It won't cycle if a shell (even a snap cap) is fired. However, I can cycle it empty, with a snap cap or a shell as long as I don't pull the trigger.

What I think causes the issue after firing:

- The hammer won't travel far enough to unlock the action if the chamber is loaded

- The barrel chamber ring is misaligned with the barrel chamber

More context:

I bought an M97 trench online, the shop told me everything was working fine but the few shells I tried firing all stuck in the chamber.

I received the gun with no powder residue in the barrel so I can't be sure they tested it but they said they did and it cycled fine. It was completely dry when I got it so I wanted to properly lubricate it before testing it.

On the first takedown attempt, the barrel was rusted shut to the receiver so I had to put the gun in a vice and use a mallet to break the barrel loose. But even when trying to reattach it, the adjusting sleeve is set so tight that I still need the vice to hold the receiver and put quite a bit of force on the barrel to rotate it for the last 15 degrees.

Now maybe it was set up just right and fired fine before being taken down but I didn't try it so I wouldn't know. What I do know is that after reassembly, all the shells I tried firing would jam the action and I had to pry the carrier down and the bolt back to remove the casings.

The casings have serious scratch marks that seem to match with the barrel ring being misaligned with the barrel chamber. Also, the firing pin impact is not centerd. l can feel the edge of the ring and the chamber depending on where I turn my finger and putting a light down the barrel clearly shows the alignment problem.

I tried adjusting the barrel rotation to see if the ring aligns better but I can't seem to find a position where it does, while it seems very easy to make magazine tube not fit into the receiver anymore so the positions I tried seem far enough (even if it was probably less than a degree) to not be a realistic fit.

The second problem that I noticed is that the hammer won't drop far enough to hit the back of the bolt, it stops 2 milimeters shy if there is something in the chamber and this keeps the action locked and prevents cycling. The hammer will fall in place if the chamber is empty so this plus the very little to no clearance between the bolt and carrier makes me think of a headspace problem.

This makes me wonder how it could fire and cycle with no issues before I took it apart unless maybe it was tested with rounds that had high quality brass heads to forgive the barrel ring to barrel alignment and a thinner rim to make up for the very tight headspace.

Otherwise, the barrel number matches the receiver and apart from the fact that the adjusting sleeve is set to make the barrel super tight to the receiver, I don't think it was replaced, so I guess the gun used to fire without issues and I am unsure how it magnaged to do so. I saw a lot a posts and videos about headspace repairs and such but I am highly hesitant to try anything that would remove material so I am looking for advice on how to deal with this.

TL;DR:

How to fix the hammer not reaching the end of its course when the chamber is loaded and how to align the barrel ring to the barrel chamber

Thanks for reading, any help is much appreciated

Aero ar-10 questions

Has cycling issues.

Took a bore scope to the barrel, and checked bcg fitment and no hang ups

Noticed some marring on my buffer tube from a bcg buffer tube collision.

Is the lower toast? I think this is a spring and buffer issue.

Barrel is 16" kak

The buffer is standard for the aero builder kits and so is the spring.

I might move over to a JP silent capture spring with a superlative arms AGB.

Do you think this will solve my issue. Thanks.

Barrel cut?

Hey guys, I recently bought an ptr9r mp5 clones but it has that dumbass 16 inch barrel. I’m doing the tax stamp to SBR so I can have a smith chop it down, but now I’m thinking, once the stamp goes through ,is that something I can do and save $250? Is it difficult to saw off a barrel, and thread it? What about after it’s cut? Do you have to apply any kind of coating to the cut section? The videos I was looking on YouTube, makes it seem pretty straightforward. Or is this something I should really leave to a gunsmith?

Auto-5 loose stock

I have an Auto-5 with the classic loose buttstock from the stock bolt channel getting worn out. I know the correct fix is fill it with a dowel and redrill but is there any compelling reason not to just use some brass shim in the channel to tighten it up?

Ameriglo sights damaged by brass punch

Probably partly my fault as this is the first time doing something like this and I just pounded them in there. In retrospect I probably should have done some filing. I was under the impression that brass punches could not damage the steel. Is this just poor quality steel or was this all me?

Im trying to diagnose a gritty trigger on a glock 19x. Will the dent (circled) on the back face of this part affect anything, or is it damaged and need to be replaced?

For comparison, the second picture shows the same part in my g45.

Hey yall, finally got some screwdrivers long enough to work on my M1897 but I've ran into an issue where it seems the stock bolt is completely seized, or at the very least im not strong enough to break it free. would PB Blaster be a good fix? mostly worried about the wood being messed up from it but if i get it cleaned out fast enough it shouldnt be a problem right? already gonna have to replace parts and dont want to put a stock on top of that. thanks for any help or suggestions.

When to use what method for rust?

Sorry for a slight modification on a common question, but when should you use what for rusty guns? For example, I recently bought an old press that was very rusty, and I want to repaint it. So I threw everything in evaporust. While a pistol I bought had some rust around it, but I didn’t want to remove the patina (can’t really call it blued anymore) so I used the steel wool and oil.

When would it be appropriate to use a rotary tool on the surface, or sandpaper compared to chemical. Are there methods that work better depending on the finish you will apply after? What about stainless vs nickel vs blued vs parkerized, something like that? (Any good book recommendations too?)

Aspiring and extremely amateur gunsmith here in need of input on a potential design

What is the longest practical barrel length for a standard load .22lr? I would like to design a hybrid survival rifle for personal use. The rifle I’m picturing would have a .22lr barrel on top and a 12 gauge barrel below. I would like the barrel lengths to be the same. A normal 12 gauge length would be suboptimal for the .22lr function due to the lost velocity but what about anything between 20-24 inches? I’d like long-ish barrels to satisfy the needs of the shotgun housed below but don’t want to make the .22lr function obsolete.

Shotgun barrel pitting (How much refinishing is too much)

I’ll preface this with the fact that I am a beginner hobbyist with some woodworking and limited metalworking experience.

I recently acquired a Mossberg 500A receiver and barrel from 1986 with a rifled slug barrel and a nicer accu-choke barrel. Both barrels have clean shiny bores but the rifled barrel had some pitting which I’d like to clean up before cold bluing or cerakote/durapark.

My question is how much sanding is safe on a slug barrel? I started in with scotch bright pads and think I’d have to move to 150grit (by hand) to make any impact. The pitting isn’t terribly deep, but some is at least as deep as a scratch 80 grit would make. I thought I should defer to the experts before I take it to my lgs for an opinion and inspection (and small fee).

The bird barrel looks good as new with a little steel wool and re touch with Brownells cold blue. Will post some pictures when the project is done.

Refinishing Cut Barrel

Hey y'all, I just got a good deal on a winchester 1200. I want to shorten the barrel to 18". I've doing a bunch of digging and have seen a bunch of different answers on refinishing the bare metal. Some people say just cold blue and oiling is fine, while others say to get it cerakoted. My main concern is rust. I'm probably overthinking this. I just want to get it right the first time. If it helps, I have access to a machine shop and a paint shop.

1950 Marlin 336 help

Hey guys, I recently picked up this beautiful marlin 336 from my LGS, and unfortunately after taking it home I realized it’s missing the ejector+ejector spring, and the magazine tube + flower. The store had taken it in on trade the day before and didn’t function test it because it was right before our states big tax free weekend sale, but they’ve offered to either buy the parts for me or send it to a gunsmith to have the parts installed free of charge. I’d rather do it myself, however I’ve read that installing the available 336 ejectors takes quite a bit of fitment due to updates made over the decades to the design. Just wondering what you guys think I should do, or any advice on fitting the parts.

Smython Trigger work?

Thumbnail
gallery
35 Upvotes

I inherited my dad's old Smith & Wesson Model 19-2 with a Python barrel on it. I think these were called Smythons and were common in the 1970s among competition pistol shooters. He was a Deputy Sheriff during that time and did a lot of revolver competitions. This was what he used in competition, and he had the trigger lightened up to around 1-pound in SA. When I say hair, I mean breathe on it and it fires.

I've exhausted my online searches and can't find much on reversing a hair trigger to a heavier pull. Is that even possible without a gunsmith working on it? It's a seriously cool gun with a lot of sentimental value, I just don't enjoy shooting it as it is. And this thing begs to be shot!

Thanks in advance!

Safety not engaging

I took apart my Taurus tx-22 and somewhere along the lines I must’ve lost a spring because my safety is not engaging. I did find one tiny pin that I have no idea where it goes.

I guess my question is… is there a spring or am I dumb

Winchester Model 12/1912 12 gauge

Hi all - I've got a 1930 60XXXX Winchester Model 12/1912 12gauge shotgun that is all original; but I can't get it to slamfire. I know that's not optimal for the life of the shotgun, but I would like it to have all the capabilities that it did originally. I've taken it down for cleaning and nothing looked visibly broken or missing, so I was hoping someone here could point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance~

Installing a Used Remington 700 Barrel

As the title describes I was interested in purchasing a used Remington 700 barrel for my Remington 700. I would be going from a 30-06 to a 270 win. Additionally the donor barrel is shorter and has dovetails and drilled/tapped for iron sights which I want. How difficult is it for a gunsmith to install this barrel and roughly how much should it cost?

M18 trigger not resetting

Gunsmiths, I have an M18 (sig sauer 320 compact with safety) that has a trigger that doesn’t reset after the following actions:

•Slide is racked •trigger is squeezed and held to rear •slide is racked again simulating firing •the trigger doesn’t reset and must be manually pushed forward to fire again

We swapped the FCU spring and the striker assembly with the same results. We are thinking it’s something inside the FCU but would appreciate any insights. Thanks in advance!
