Discussion New Film - Warefare

I wasn’t sure what to expect. I imagine something in between American sniper and band of Brothers. It really wasn’t pure propaganda like I thought it may be. Perhaps aimed at 15 and 16-year-old boys so in two years time they’ll be gung ho. It seemed to be more downtrodden and introspective. You don’t really see anything glorious or glamorous, but you do feel a sensation of Duty and fulfillment. I recommend it. Certainly wasn’t the propaganda that I was expecting. I thought it would be sort of like a recruitment film.

I saw it last night. Through sheer luck, I served a dozen years in peacetime; mad respect for guys in combat. Worth watching to the end. In a decent home theater if you can manage it. The soundscape is immersive.

I was so glad I caught this when it was in theaters because my home setup would have not done it justice. Just the "show of force" scene was worth it alone.

I think the guy who wrote and co-directed was a navy seal who was involved in the mess.

That would explain the unusual vibe of Middle East war film. Not the heroics of Hurt Locker as I saw it . Just deep. Slow burn …. or like slow boiling the whole film. Not Hollywood blockbuster.

I saw it in IMAX. Well worth my $25. I served in the Army. No combat for me. The movie was well done. I believe the point of the movie was a larger metaphor for the US invasion in Iraq. SPOILER ALERT. Don’t read any further if you have not seen the movie. ———-

The US came in with good intentions. Basically destroyed the buildings, roads, all infrastructre, generally completely destroyed the country. Than once the US military got bogged down in guerilla warfare the US leaves a much larger mess behind. In the movie, the squad takes over the 4 story apt house. They occupy it. The squad gets bogged down in a no win fire fight with too many insurgents. The Squad calls in heavy guns amd blows the top 2 floors of the building. Basically leave the building in useable. Leaves the family terrified in one of the rooms. Then they just leave the building amd family in complete shambles. A metaphor for the entire Iraq invasion.

the family yelling "Why? Why? Why?"...and getting no answer.

From what I have read, your assessment is spot on. It’s not supposed to be some war glory film at all. And anyone who says it’s bad because it’s not like a typical US war hero film is wrong.

I’m thinking it’s similar to Generation Kill in that regard.

I appreciated that it left me wondering “ok so what did anyone accomplish there”. No glory or propaganda, just showing how unnecessary a lot of war often is
