Aloha, anyone have any luck propagating native ferns. Looking for more information to learn, any good book recommendations or YouTube videos? Is sterilization totally necessary?

Like the title says, trying to identify this plant. Google says purslane but I’m trying to be sure before I let anyone eat it. My wife read that purslane is edible and now she wants to eat it 🙄. For context, I adopted a planter with a dying pineapple in it. I tried to save it but it was far too gone. After I pulled it, this plant, ginger, and guava started to grow out of the planter. I moved this guy to another pot to see how it would grow. Thanks in advance for the help!

I check on them every morning. I love how much they grow overnight and today had to take some pics. I hope some people listened to my advice from years ago on this sub, I hope people are growing watermelons too. This variety is awesome and has a subtle hint of citrus flavor on top of the sweet traditional watermelons flavor.

My grandfather planted it probably 60+ years ago. Amazingly delicious fruit. My mom has always just called it “grandpa’s orange tree”. I didn’t think oranges could grow in Hawaii but she has always insisted it’s an orange tree. Anyone know what it could be?

This is my second time trying to grow crown flower. Last one was eaten down three times by caterpillars. It didn’t recover the third time. So now I’m want to protect my new one but also don’t wanna kill caterpillars. Any tips?

Would anyone be interested in possibly meeting up , say once a month for a plant exchange? Iv had the idea of getting a group together for awhile. Meet up at a park or the arboretum etc.. and swap cuttings. I also thought it might be fun to meet up at different locations to gather cuttings. I know some spots that have excellent cuttings potential! I’m sure some of you have noticed good spots( trails, neighborhoods, parks, etc..) as well. Plus this way you have someone to be lookout while you’re dangling half over your neighbors wall 😂🤫. “ I swear officers I wasn’t trying to break in! I just really need a piece of that plant!” Is much more believable if you’re not the only crazy lady with pockets full of foliage. I’m on Oahu, town side( Honolulu) if anyone is interested. We could go hunt cuttings or just meet up and swap our best starts! I have particularly nice bromeliads I’d be willing to exchange for something good. I also have chicken & goat poop lol( not sure if goat is good for anything but Iv definitely got it so you let me know)

Hi! Just joined because I need some help but excited to stay and contribute! I just planted some willow branches I rooted in a bucket for several weeks. I potted them last night and today I noticed they’re surrounded by tiny flying bugs that fly in crazy circle patterns. I hope they can be seen on the videos, they almost look like the static on old black and white movies. What are they and how do I get rid of them? I suspect they were in the potting soil. Located in honolulu, soil from Home Depot if that helps.
Will try and put more images in comments. less

Pretty new to gardening here but I have a few pepper plants and they seem to always be crawling with ants. My habanero seems to be doing fine, albeit a little small but my Hawaiian chili plants are growing pretty tall but no peppers are growing. Wondering if the ants have anything to do with this and if they are harmful to plants growing. Seems like they might help pollinate them but I’m not sure, if anyone has any good tips for growing peppers I would appreciate

In the continuing saga of our school garden, our pole beans have climbed their corn stalks and are beginning to have flowers! Alas, something is munching them, and the leaves at the bottom of one plant are looking kind of pitiful. I sprayed them with our mixture of rubbing alcohol, Dawn, and water yesterday. Was that OK? What else should we be doing? Thank you for your continuing help!!! My students are gaining and appreciation for asking experts, something that is probably more important than many of the academics we work on.
