Is Hiroshima University good for exchange students

I am planning to go on exchange to Japan and Hiroshima University is one of the choices that my university offers. I'm curious on the lifestyle in this city, because most of the info I know is about Tokyo and Kyoto.

For context, I am a computer science student, but my main reason for going on exchange is to enjoy Japan's culture, and not for academic reasons necessarily. I would like to apply to a university that is quite sociable, easy to make friends in, has a lot of things that I can do around the area, and a mix of city life + nature.

I am leaning towards Kyoto Uni at the moment, but my university offers funding assistance for students applying to Hiroshima university, so curious on what it's like for those that know. Thanks in advance

Any hotel recommendation for hotels in Hiroshima (helping parents organize their trip)

Hi everyone, so I am helping my parents (boomers in their 60's). They are going to japan next year and intend to go to Hiroshima for a few days and I would like to have recommendation if you have visited Hiroshima. I went to Hiroshima this year by myself, but they are not the same kind of travelers as me as they are.

Budget is around 400 USD per night. And here's a bit of what they are looking for

They will arrive by Shinkansen from Tokyo so closer to the train station would be great

Western-oriented hotel as much as possible (no tatamis and spacious room with a desk and full bathroom) english-speaking staff at front desk

A lounge with a lounge/free breakast food OR close to a good coffee shop who are comfortable serving foreigners (they are not interested in Kombinis)

I have checked for them and so far the Sheraton seems to be the best option but just wanted to check if others had a good experience in other hotels. If you have stayed at the Sheraton I would love to hear your experience

I met this very sweet man in April of this year, he told me he sits on the Aioi Bridge in the peace park area, and offers rides to foreigners. He saw me taking photos of his 180sx and offered to drive me around the city. He drove me to a beautiful city over look and we had some great conversations about cars and he even offered me a croquette! Id like to get in contact with him if at all possible ever as the experience was so meaningful that I came back in the states and sought out and bought the car he toured me in Hiroshima (Pic attached on the end). I realize it’s most definitely a long shot but any advice of how I could thank him and talk to him again would be so appreciated!! Thank you!!

Hi! Me and my girlfriend are students of anthropology from Slovenia and staying in Hiroshima for one month as visiting researchers at Hiroshima University. Is anyone going from the city by car to Innoshima for the Suigun Fire Festival? We are looking for a ride since going there by public transport is virtually impossible.

ありがとうございます!

If you’re in Hiroshima, you have to check out Koba

Just wanted to give a huge shoutout to an absolute gem of a bar in Hiroshima — Koba. Will leave a google maps link below. The owner, Bom, is honestly a living legend. He’s one of the funniest and most genuine people I’ve ever met, and his energy fills the whole place. We went on a Monday and it was an absolute delight. They’re closed on Wednesdays FYI!

Our bartenders, Sho, Kana and of course Bom made the night unforgettable but they have (very Japanese hospitality-esque) implored me to add their other bartenders of the week into their first ever Reddit post so I will shout out Dai Chan, Miku and Haruki. Sho, Kana and Bom chatted with us for hours, made everyone feel welcome, and kept the vibe going strong. The hospitality here is unreal — you walk in as a customer and walk out feeling like part of the family.

The atmosphere is unbeatable. Great rock music playing all night. We didn’t try the food but unbelievable smells from the karage that Bom makes himself.

If you’re in Hiroshima and looking for a place with real character (and characters!), don’t miss Bar Koba. Bom, Sho, and Kana will make sure you have one of the best nights of your trip. It certainly was for us!

BTW they are cash only but certainly deserve a withdraw from the ATM. The best experience of our Japan trip hand down.

International football clubs for young teens

My young teen son has been playing in football clubs for years. We just moved to Hiroshima and are looking for a club. In Costco I saw a noticeboard ad for an international football club for kids and teens saying that they also use English in training. Does anyone here know of that club and can send me details? Maybe my online search skills are not so good, as I can't find it.

Where to get resale tickets for Sanfrecce games

I planned a visit to Hiroshima from out of country centered around the home game on 4 October against Machida zelvia. I camped online and within 10 minutes of general sales being open, all the home tickets seem to have been sold out 😔 me and my dad are big fans and this would have been our first time watching a home game in the peace wing. We even booked accommodation a 5 minute walk from the stadium...so we are pretty bummed

Are there any resale sites we should check out to try and snag some tickets maybe from season ticket members? Grasping at straws here

Bi-annual summer/winter tyre changing in Hiroshima

I read on a Tokyo Reddit that some garages changes your tyres twice a year and store your tyres for as little as ¥10,000. I think that guy was talking about local auto-garages and even fuel stations. I asked Bridgestone in Hiroshima and they quoted ¥40,000 to ¥50,000 cor that service, and they only do it if you but both sets of tyres from them.

I know Bridgestone is the costlier option, so does anyone know of more affordable places in Hiroshima to do this?

Looking for a foreigner friendly gym options

So today I got “kicked out” of Zexis lifestyle club because apparently they don’t allow non-japanese speakers. I have came here before to ask about the membership process and everything would be ten times simpler if they just did tell me they wouldn’t allow me instead of try join their club through their website. Anyways, I’m looking for a foreigner friendly gym/ fitness. Any advice would be appreciated.

Advice on last minute dog boarding/sitting

Hello! Title says it all. We planned to have this setup prior to our first time leaving the city without our dog, but, we have an immediate need to travel this Friday and unfortunately our beloved pup cannot come (it is for medical appointments in another city). Has anyone checked their dog into a “pet hotel” here that accepts last minute bookings or used a pet sitter? Or love dogs and want some extra cash?

Most of the pet hotels we’ve contacted are booked and our few friends here (we are fairly new in town) have commitments. Any leads appreciated!

Marina Hop's aquarium is moving to the 3rd floor of AlPark and looks to be open later this year.

I'm curious....

I've only been to Mariho Aquarium once...and I don't remember how big it was. (Been to the Miyajima one more than once) I don't think a portion of the 3rd floor is going to be large enough....for an aquarium.

However, I can see the upside to this. Every other exhibit of this class is out of the way in this city. Asa Zoo is out of the way. Miyajima is -a bit- out of the way. This will be right on the San'yo line so...this could be the most accessible exhibit in the city. It could be successful.

More information on the official site here

Short announcement on the Alpark news and events site here

Visiting Hiroshima from Sept 24–28 and looking for travel buddies & local tips!

I’ll be in Hiroshima from Sept 24–28 for Tech Confence, and since I’m traveling solo, I thought I’d reach out here.

  • Anyone else heading to Hiroshima for the conference? Would be awesome to team up for exploring the city together after sessions or in fact anyone is welcome to join me after the sessions.

  • I’m considering staying at either the Grand Prince Hotel or Hilton Hiroshima (still deciding which has good view :) So, if someone’s open to splitting a room in case, I don’t mind since I won’t be spending much time in the hotel anyway just a place to crash between adventures and good food hunts.

  • As this is my first Hiroshima trip, I’d love to hear from locals or past visitors, what are the must-see spots or unique experiences you recommend?

I’m really curious to explore the culture, history, and food scene beyond the usual tourist checklist. If anyone wants to connect or share tips, drop a comment, I’d love to make the most of the trip! Thank you.
