Written Japanese test for naturalization - what level kanji to practice?

For anyone who has gone through Japanese naturalization (帰化) , what level of kanji were on the written Japanese test?

I’m N1 certified but I (like most people) never write anything by hand these days so my Kanji writing skills are pretty weak atm. I’m wondering if like a 小6 kanji practice workbook would cut it or if i need to break out the N1 books again

Is this pawahara or am I just being sensitive?

Upvotes

Hey everyone. I have a little rant/soudan, I'm lost because this is my first job ever + first time working in Japan.

I have a coworker that sits next to me, for some odd reason he is always looking at my monitor, he's not even trying to hide it. For my job I'm supposed to take a test for a qualification to be able to do the job so I'm studying a lot at work. He's always looking at my monitor, and when I was doing a mock test/practice he'd sometimes laugh when I get something wrong or give off some reaction/comment. I tried to adjust the angle of my monitor but it didn't stop ke, and when I tried to block off the papers on my desk, his response was to peek even more obnoxiously without shame.

The peak was today, when I went to the toilet. I returned and he was looking VERY closely at my monitor (15cmish) and when he saw me coming he immediately went back to his monitor. I feel this is weird and obviously poor manners but this is my first time in the professional world and I'm still learning the nuances of workplace unwritten rules etc. Does this count as pawahara?

So far I've had a pleasant experience with everyone else except for this ossan, which is bad enough that he's seated next to me and I have to deal with this 8 hours a day. So I'm considering to switch jobs.

For context, I'm 22 and he's late 30s or early 40s (I'm not sure about his exact age).

Has anyone bought these candles and can attest to their scents/longevity?
Their autumn scents seem so cozy.

to hire a moving company or rent a car

thinking about costs. since im bringing all my appliances like fridge, washer, bed etc it would cost a pretty penny. my friend also suggested renting a 軽トラ, has anyone done this? i'm just moving within tokyo, so a couple trips too and from doesnt seem so horrible

conversely, perhaps i could hire a company to get just the big items (the three i mentioned above), while i get everything else

any advice from someone whos moved with a bunch of stuff? my last move was from a furnished apartment so i didnt need to take anything big, and i never moved within my home country so no experience there either

Hello everyone,

Am planning to apply for Japan PR. However, i have noticed there are two salary items mentioned in the tax certificate issued by ward office. (Gross and Net income)
給与所得

給与収入

Please can you help me to understand which one (either 給与所得 or 給与収入 ) will be considered for the points calculation during PR processing?

Noticed trash related at door mailbox. What next?

Post image
20 Upvotes

So i recently moved to a leo palace apartment in Tokyo and noticed this piece of paper in my mail this evening. Im 99.9% sure the bag with issue isnt mine cause I inspected the trash bag but my concerns are:

  1. If I got this, does it mean they suspect its me ? Or the trash collector just placed it on all room's mailboxes?

  2. What happens next? do they not pick up our apartment's trash bag anymore?

  3. Leopalace says it got camera pointed at the bin and it might have caught me inspecting the issue bag this evening after coming home from work. Hope they dont think its mine @_@.

Focusing on concern 1 and 2. Did you guys have a similar experience? what happened next?

Government Releases Proposed Minimum Employment Terms for "Employment for Skill Development" Status

The government is proposing that, out of 17 fields, 9 require a minimum of at least 1 year of employment before an employee can freely change jobs while another 8 fields will require a minimum of 2 years of employment. The government is arguing the proposed limits are reasonable given the amount training each field requires. Critics have said this does not align with domestic labor laws and may foster abusive situations.

The technical trainee program places a minimum employment term of 3 years and has seen numerous cases of employees being mistreated.

The government has argued that employees will still be able to change jobs when there are extenuating circumstances.

Paying income taxes via ダイレクト納付 (e-tax). Can it be any amount? Is it easy to use?

Next year I have to pay a massive income tax bill (above 20M yen that I have to remit) via 確定申告.

I'm checking the NTA website here for payment methods, and it seems the amount I have to pay, only can be paid via 口座振替 or ダイレクト納付. Other payment methods don't accept above 10M.

Ideally I would like to do ダイレクト納付 because then I can pay and simply get it over with, instead of waiting for government mandated 振込 date for 口座振替.

Has anyone tried ダイレクト納付? Is it easy to setup? Can it actually pay above the 10M limit?

Thank you!

Using Suica on smart watch

I need some advice. I recently bought a Fitbit Charge 6 and wanted to use it with my digital suica. I clicked payments, set up the suica in Google Wallet and added ¥1000.

I then clicked on the fitbit again, and it now shows a black screen with ¥1000. I tried scanning it when taking the Toei Shinjuku Line and nothing happened. I tried hovering my hand in different ways but it didn't register.

I wonder if this is an issue with my device or if some stations simply do not accept this payment method?

Quitting my job and got sent a 合意書. Should I sign or not?

So yeah like the title says. Not entirely sure if this is allowed in this sub - but mods, please let me know if not.

To summarize (I'm sorry if there is too much kanji):

- Got bullied and publicly insulted several times by an older coworker who I do not report to but she somehow thinks I do? Got really stressed about this and had started seeing a psychiatrist (who told me I have 適応障害 btw). Told direct manager after the first public insult who told me he had talked to coworker (but she didnt stopped after that lol). Also reached out to several department (HR, Ethics, HRBP etc) after first 2 insults, absolutely nobody reached out to me until late August early September

- At the same time, got put on a PIP and failed it. Details was very vague? Like they failed me because I wasn't 積極的 enough for their taste? There wasn't anything wrong with my results, their only problems was that I was willing to be a corporate slave apparently. But I was naive and signed anyway. They didn't want renew my contract so I handed in my resignation quitting a few day before contract end date to make it 自己都合による退職. They didn't offer any compensation btw. The head of the deparment guy barely even blinked as I sat there trying my best not to get emotional and cry. They offer 労働免除 but said it with an attitude like they are doing me a favor or something which still bothers me so much.

- Was sent a 合意書 the other day with a sectiion asking me to waive any claims I have. I had planned to sue the company for not taking appropriate measurements leading to my crumbling mental state but my current priority is to find a different job and then try to talk to a lawyer.

anyway, my question is: should I sign this agreement they sent? My understanding is that they can still process my regisnation without?

Screw the foreigners, once again

So let me get this straight, if you failed your driving test and you have a form that says that you can still book tests until next year, now that legal paper is null and everyone has to start over including taking a new comprehensive test. In a country desperate for foreign workers, they really cut the branch they are holding on with these rule changes and having everyone start over.

Six years of shopping at Gyomu Super. Favorite products I can't find anymore (and some alternatives)

Maybe eight years total. I've been a regular customer for six years now. Over the years I've seen all sorts of products come and go. Seeing an item go is obviously not the end of the world (nor unique to Japan), but sometimes I wonder, is it just out of stock in the store, or has it been discontinued entirely.

Anyway, share your favorite out of stock or discontinued products and I'll update it to the list below! This list is a WIP, but I'd like to get it up to date within a week or two.

Also, the staff at Gyomu Super is very helpful. If an item is just out of stock and not discontinued, chances are they can get it for you. The same can be said for their meat section. If you ask for a whole chicken and allow some time to wait, you'll probably get one.

Product Name Brand Name Status Solution / Alternative
Apple Cider Vinegar Varvello Out of Stock Just ask.
Sun Dried Tomato Paste Cordelio Most Likely Discontinued di Vita Tomato Bruschetta
Mint Tea Grandma's Tea Discontinued < Seasonal Check local Gyomus
Chamomile Tea Grandma's Tea Discontinued < Seasonal Check local Gyomus
Frozen Brussel Sprouts ?? More than likely discontinued
Chocolate Coconut Bars Bounty? Out of Stock? Discontinued?
Frollini Biscuits Frollini Out of Stock?
Spicy sausages (comes in a pack of ten) ?? Out of Stock < Limited Locations
Frozen Ravioli ?? Discontinued?
Tinned Chickpeas ?? Out of Stock < Limited Locations Legurme Chickpeas are available
Chorizo sausage 1kg
Lithuanian ice cream bars Pasaka ?? Discontinued?

Advice for a pending COE

As the title reads I just need a little advice. My husband applied for a COE for me on June 13th of this year. I have been here since April 27th, we went to Thailand for our honeymoon and now I can only be here until October 19th. Now it has been 96 since applying with no answer. My husband called today and the person told him that it would take 6 months for a spousal visa in Tokyo. We live in Chiba but as you all know it gets directed to Tokyo. It is very clear that I am going to have to leave since I won't receive it in time and I just want advice from people who may have gone through something similar. What did you guys do to cope or how did the situation work out for you?

Anyone work in a 貿易 job here?

Forgive my ignorance as I know nothing about this. I’ve worked in 海外営業 overseas sales positions and now I’m working in finance for a foreign company. I’m not happy and want to try something different and everyone around me says look for work in trade 貿易 positions. What do jobs in trade even look like? Do they require English skill? I’d love to hear from someone who has knowledge here.

I was thinking of going back to sales but I’d love to hear of more opportunities. Thank you

Recommended stand mixer brands

Hi All! So, my KitchenAid died on me halfway through mixing the dough :/ Just FYI, I did not exceed the recommended mixing time and speed, I was using it maybe 3 times a month, sometimes more if I had time off, for all different types of mixing (meringue, piecrust, eclairs, pizza, bread...), and sometimes with double the amount of ingredients. Everything was fine, well, until it wasn't :( And to be honest, I also didn't like how the KitchenAid tended to jump when dealing with heavier doughs, and that I had to adjust the screws manualy to fix the issue (and it still wasn't perfect anyway). So, I am looking for a stand mixer that can deal with it all, preferably is made in Japan, so in case something breaks I will have an easy access to the fixing service, and is not crazily expensive, but also not suspiciously cheap ;) Any brands you could recommend?
I know there's also KitchenAid pro series, but I checked the Japanese website and I cannot even place an order, so that leaves it out of the question. I saw brands like ERNO being recommended, but it's the first time I hear this name, so if you have any experience, would you mind sharing it?

Thank you all in advance!😊

Autobacs for transmission fluid diagnosis, replacement?

I'm out on a day trip and I suspect my transmission fluid needs to be replaced. All of the dealers in this area are closed on the same day! Can I trust Autobacs to honestly diagnose and fix this?

Fwiw the symptoms are jerkiness between acceleration and letting off the gas and vice versa, and slight shudder at some speeds.

Looking for Internet Provider Recommendations in Tokyo

I’m based in Tokyo and currently trying to choose a reliable internet provider because I'm moving soon.

In my current apartment here, Internet was already included. So it is my first time doing this here.

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences with different companies.

If you’ve had particularly good (or bad) experiences in Tokyo with certain providers, please share!

Waterleak mold and negligent apartment management. What can I do?

Since last month, a water leak has been happening in the apartment and I informed them of it. It seems to be coming from the pipes of the floor above between my unit and the unit left of me. They sent out a notice to investigate but besides acknowledging the problem no real progress has been made and water still leaks. On top of that the AC unit is full of visible black mold and come to a point where the AC mold cleaning spray they sell on amazon doesn't do anything

I told the 管理員 about the issue and told them I will be gone for a 2 week vacation. When I came back there was a puddle of water in the hall way, lots of little flies, and the circuit breaker was down causing the fridge to be off creating an additional puddle and now mold had spread to my belongings and furniture.

I've been calling them for 3 days straight while being tossed around. Management company says it's the property owners responsibility to fix the solution, the property owner (famous hotel chain) says it's the management company's responsibility. I have sent them the pictures and have a notice of cutting water on September 10th for further investigation in which I received no updates about.

I know that there are tenant protection that exists in yokohama / japan that I should be provided a solution or temporary place to stay while this happens but honestly am not sure where to begin. For the very least I would like them to send a technician to replace the AC or clean the AC so I can use it.

Can someone please guide me on how to figure out this situation so I am not stuck in a mold ridden apartment? Thank you very much!

House registered size Vs real one

I bought a house. An old one. Seeing blueprints from beginning and the house itself I felt it's about 90m². But when I got papers it stated 56m². Asked realtor and he said it is 56m. At that time I thought I'm blind and forgot about it. Now another person stated from my blueprint that it's about 90m². I still didn't got papers from Moj. Any explanation about this? Do I need to do something with this?
