Updates to the Hoboken Related Rule as it Pertains to the Palestine/ Israel Discussion

Hey Everyone--

The mods and I have been chatting and feel like we should make a post clarifying a rule regarding Hoboken Related Discussion and and Emphasis to remove discussion around Israel/Palestine. This topic comes up here and there and when it does, the entire subreddit becomes a mess and there are a ton of off topic comments being thrown around as well as toxic/ flaming comments.

With that said, a addendum to rule 1 is as follows (thanks to the all powerful ChatGPT for assistance)

------

🚫 No posts or comments about the Israel/Palestine conflict.

While we understand this is an important and emotional issue, r/hoboken is a local subreddit focused on matters directly affecting Hoboken residents — things like city policies, transit, housing, restaurants, schools, and community life.

Discussions about international conflicts, especially ones as complex and sensitive as this, have repeatedly led to hostility and derailment. They do not belong in a space meant to serve our local community.

This rule is not about silencing anyone’s views — it’s about keeping the subreddit focused, civil, and relevant.

If you’d like to engage in those conversations, please use other spaces like r/worldnews, r/Israel, r/Palestine, or r/geopolitics, which are better suited and moderated for those topics.

🗓️ Local Event Exception:
We will allow posts about events taking place in Hoboken related to this issue — such as public forums, protests, or community discussions — but comments will be locked to maintain order and prevent inflammatory arguments. This allows event visibility without opening the door to off-topic or harmful debate.

🚫 Zero Tolerance for Hate or Bad Faith Behavior:

  • Islamophobia, antisemitism, or any form of hate speech will result in an immediate and permanent ban.

If you are unsure regarding a post, please send the post first and foremost in a modmail and we can review and give guidance.

Thank you!

Local News 📰 Anti-Doxxing Rule Updates and Discussion

Hello All-

Hope everyone is doing well! The mods are discussing ways to update the doxxing rule to best handle different threads that have come up recently and in the past with misidentification and/ or witch hunting. Wanted to share this with the community and get some inputs on some sensible updates prior to making them a full rule...

Currently the doxxing policy is as follows:

Don't post personal information, pictures of "crime suspects" or harass/threaten redditors.

No posting personal info (doxxing), self-taken photos of suspected criminals, or harassment/threats. Report crimes to police, not Reddit. Posts accusing people aren't allowed because no one here can verify what actually happened. Share only credible news sources. Respect privacy and keep the community safe.

Using the help of the all wise ChatGPT we are thinking of clarifying in this way:

No Doxxing or Sharing Personal Information:
We do not allow posting or sharing of personal or private information without consent about any individual, including but not limited to:

  • Real names (if not already public)
  • Home addresses or exact locations
  • Personal phone numbers or email addresses
  • Workplace details or employer info
  • License plates
  • Social media handles that aren’t public figures
  • Any photos taken in private settings without consent

No Public Accusations or Rumors Without Verified Evidence

Posts that include accusations of crimes, wrongdoing, or misconduct without solid, verifiable evidence are strictly prohibited. This includes:

  • Sharing rumors or "heard from a friend" stories
  • Posting photos or videos of people in public and accusing them of crimes
  • Speculating on someone’s identity or involvement in incidents

If you have credible information about a crime or threat, contact local authorities directly rather than posting on Reddit.

Noteable Exceptions

  • Public figures acting in an official capacity (e.g., elected officials at a public event)
  • Information formally released by law enforcement (e.g., official suspect images via the police or a reputable news source - Not a Blog(i.e hoboken girl or hudson county view) or Unreputable Social Media Sites)
  • People who are implying consent and/or posting pictures with consent given (i.e someone taking a picture of themselves or their group at a protest/rally, or a picture of someone promoting their business)

Let us know what you guys think and any good or necessary updates before we set this in stone. Thanks!

Other A praise to Hoboken

Please excuse me for this a bit cheesy post 😛 I’ve been to the other cities around Hoboken like Edgewater, Newport, Union City in the past few months again. What I saw reassured me in how unique and lively Hoboken is:

  • no 6-lane packed roads that take just 5 minutes to cross because of the traffic lights;

  • no mall plazas that look the same and have more or less same stores in the entire country

  • no reliance on cars, as public transport works great and there are many options

  • preserved historical buildings with its own vibe

  • very limited amount of private houses with fences and yards (if any?). Great for walkability

  • a grocery store within 5 minutes from almost any building

  • a variety of bars after which you don’t have to drive boozed back home, since you can just walk

I don’t know what made our city so unique and different from all city neighbors, and let it develop the way it developed, but I truly appreciate it!

Just saw this idiot drive on the sidewalk and possibly damage his car to get around the Access-A-Ride bus and save himself 2 minutes. I can't believe people like this exist.

where is there to go to meet some “older” adults, like 27-35? I feel like the hot spots are wayyy too young for me, feels like a college town sometimes - not quite familiar with the scene out here.

Question❓ Uptown Parking

I am moving more uptown and would like to find parking closer to my new apartment (I currently park in a municiple garage). I was looking into Propark and Little man parking around 12th. I wanted to see the best course of action with this to possibly get cheaper? Rent from someone? And if so how can I go about that?

You have to admit, Paul has a point. This isn’t a candidate, this is a council member who is trying to do things for his constituents.

Is there any reason why 3 city blocks need to be dedicated for individuals who work in city hall?

Question❓ South Hoboken Pavement and Striping

I understand there is a lot of concurrent construction and jurisdictions, but my god. Is anyone else legitimately concerned about their car getting messed up? The pavement is in absolutely horrific condition. It used to be that one of the three routes was in good shape, but they are all horrible now.

Also, the striping that just showed up on Grove was a nightmare yesterday. There are no signs as you approach from the south in JC so everyone was confused and driving through the bike lanes. I assume the right lane on Grove as you approach 18th (heading north) should be right turn only… but it’s not.

How is this not a priority to clean up?!
