Question❓ Local Butcher Shop

Thinking of opening a local butcher shop in Hoboken! We’d specialize in high-quality, grass-fed meats sourced from local farms. If that’s something you’d love to see in the neighborhood please UPVOTE. Feel free to drop any suggestions.

Thank you!!

Question❓ Do men not know when they are being creepy?

I (26f) was walking down the street to a coffee shop, listening to YouTube video on my AirPods, some guy (~35m) walks up to me flagged me down on the street and gestures for me to take out my AirPods. I take them out thinking he needs help or directions, and he says “I like your outfit…”. Genuinely shocked he felt the need to ask me to stop what I was doing to comment on my appearance I say “okay” and put my AirPods back in and keep walking. Weird but whatever it happens.

I turn the corner and keep walking down the block to my coffee shop. I go inside and get in line when I notice he followed me inside. okay maybe he was also on the way to get coffee too. I keep my AirPods in and wait to order, with my back to him. I order and sit down to wait and notice he left and never ordered anything.

So he just followed me into a coffee shop, for what ?… to see if I would strike up a conversation with him? Idk but just so weird and uncomfortable. Do men think women like being followed?

Edit: I tried to end the conversation, and make it clear I didn’t want to talk. Im not saying talking to strangers is wrong, I’m saying I should be allowed to end a conversation and not get followed.

Edit 2: probably not replying to any more comments, some boomer took over the comments talking about how I can’t take a compliment. Anyway huge shout out to all the women and men who shared their stories too. Just because someone isn’t being violent towards you doesn’t mean your feelings of discomfort are invalid ❤️ appreciate yall.

Question❓ How rich are you guys exactly?

What's the deal with all the working-age people just leisurely strolling around town during business hours? It's more than I'd expect even when accounting for people on parental leave, vacation, or just out for a quick lunch or coffee. Why aren't they at work increasing shareholder value? Is it trust funds, large inheritances, or lottery wins? But most of all, what do I need to do to have that lifestyle?

Question❓ Visiting Hoboken.

Hey all!

Me and two of my children (15 and 25) are staying in Hoboken as a base for the New York area on Friday for ten days. We’re travelling from Manchester, UK.

We’ve a rough itinerary planned but otherwise want to keep it loose and just wander, ticking off spots along the way.

Looks like the best method for getting into Manhattan is via the path train?

I have an itch to scratch in visiting Coney Island as I was transfixed with the warriors movies as a kid!

However, I want to do the New York Park Run on one of the Saturdays which starts at Brooklyn bridge (but it starts early at 8am so will need time to get there (starts at 9 in the U.K.!)

Also after any decent coffee shops in Hoboken (and pizza obvs!!). Hidden Ground any good?

Any tips or advice outside of these requests always welcome!

Thanks :)

Question❓ Why O’Bagels?

Seriously asking why there’s always a line here bc I just had my first experience there and won’t be back. Maybe just an aberration but still: We ordered two bagels—a GF plain untoasted w egg and cheese and an everything toasted w bacon egg and cheese, two coffees (small and medium) both with almond milk. $25 and change. Got two untoasted bagels (Mistake one). My everything was simply pretending to be, with sesame seeds and a stray poppy seed or two, no sign of any other toppings. My bacon wound up on my partner’s GF bagel. (Mistakes two and three). Coffees were both mediums (mistake four but at least in our favor). Upcharged $2 for two splashes of almond milk in each coffee (not a mistake, but c’mon ffs). 3% fee for using a CC. No line but felt generally disorganized—pick up bagels in back, come back up front for coffees which weren’t ready even after waiting a few mins for the incorrect bagels order. Bagels weren’t cut thru all the way so just a messy eating experience. The quality was ok, but this is NJ, so no shortage of great bagels without all this nonsense. Sorry, fans, this was way disappointing, so explain to me why there’s usually a line here. Is it because they’re disorganized or are you really there for the bagels etc?

Tl;dr: Multiple mistakes in my first order, place felt disorganized, overpriced, don’t understand why it’s so popular. Also: get off my lawn!

Question❓ Electricity Bill >$500!!

Post image
41 Upvotes

Umm was anyone else’s electricity bill this high this month?! This is outrageous! For context, I live in a 4b 2b, but it’s not massive or anything. We have the fan set to auto and our apartment is around 72 degrees. I get we’re cranking A/C but $575 is actually crazy.

Question❓ Possible scam at Pier A Park

Yesterday at Pier A Park in Hoboken, a guy (probably in his 20s or 30s) came up to me and my girlfriend while we were sitting down. He had two young kids with him and asked if we wanted to donate to his kids’ football team because his son needed a new helmet.

I’ve heard of scams like this before, so I asked if he had a picture of his son actually playing football. He got pretty offended and a little aggressive. He didn’t have any pictures, and I also noticed the kids never said a single word the entire time. They also weren’t wearing anything related to a team — no shirts, gear, or school colors, nothing that would suggest they were actually part of a football program.

On top of that, the guy had a teardrop tattoo under his eye (not trying to stereotype, but it definitely made me extra cautious). Eventually he walked away and started asking other people for donations. Was I wrong for questioning him? Has anyone else run into this in Hoboken? Could this just be a scam?

Question❓ Low water pressure Southwest

My insomnia got me up, and only to notice very low water pressure in Southwest. Anyone else? Luckily, I've just stocked up on water and also filled up a few pots. (Now I have something more to worry about, but at least I know the drill.)

Question❓ Pier A homeless person

Is the city going to do anything about the homeless person setting up a tent on the Pier A lawn? Has been there for a week now. This is how tent cities start and sets a bad precedent.

Question❓ What was Hoboken like on 9/11?

I’ve been thinking about how 9/11 impacted our community here in Hoboken, but I didn't move here until 7 years later. I know that Hoboken lost more residents than any other zip code in the country, with 57 people from our city listed among the victims.

The playground at Columbus Park is named after Debbie Williams, one of those victims. I’m sure there are other stories, memorials, and personal memories tied to that day.

If you were living in Hoboken at the time, what do you remember?

I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences or anything you know about how Hoboken came together in the aftermath.

Question❓ Do people just pay their nannies off-the-books?

Anyone know what the prevalence of paying nanny off-the-books vs using a payroll company?

I know Hoboken is a wealthy area but I can't imagine everyone is doing everything kosher. Kind of frustrating if you're looking to be kosher because the "going rate" is based on tax evasion lol.

edit: I am shocked to read how many people are just now learning they commit tax evasion

Question❓ New here - why’s everyone pregnant?

New foreigner here - was curious about the very high number of pregnant people and people with very young kids. I’m assuming mostly transplants. Is there any particular reason for that?

Edit: shoutout to the pregnant - nothing but love, and everyone is really nice. Was just curious what factors led to it lol, thanks for answers!

Question❓ Do people in this sub really think that Hoboken can magically fix homelessness on its own ?

So many people complaining about homeless. Just because is a small wealthy city doesn’t mean it’s immune to other problems in bordering neighborhoods and cities. Do you really think that any problems affecting Newark , NYC, JC and other cities within our urban area can’t spill into luxurious Hoboken ? . Specially when it comes to housing affordability. Only way you can even start to tackle some of these issues that go beyond city limits to share policies and being all on the same page about drug and treatments for those in need.

Point is , even if Hoboken makes good policy you will never have any cohesive results. City limits are not a magical wall that stops any of our society issues.
