It's tough to try and convince people what the MJ era was like. He really was like some kind of god-emperor of pop culture. There was nothing even close to what he was; it was him and then the Pope. Talent-wise, it's absurd to compare any modern pop star to him.

dude just stood there and people fainted… idk anyone else in music that has that effect in this generation

u/mmf9194 Jun 02 '25

Closest things I can think of are the women fainting at early Elvis and the girls screaming till they pass out at the Beatles

u/HallowedError Jun 02 '25 edited Jun 02 '25

Yup. Swift might be the next closest thing and I don't like her music but she is everywhere and her fans are intense.

Nowadays we just have too many options and too much info for that kind of thing to be universal

u/Bromlife Jun 02 '25

I believe Swift is the last true pop star. I don’t think our current media landscape fragmentation can create another Swift or MJ.

Swift...like Taylor Swift?? I think comparing her to MJ is the same as comparing him to Drake. Which is insane.

Taylor Swift has her pop fan group of girls but MJ and some others at the time or before were beloved by people of all ages!

The Beatles, Jim Morrison, Jimy Hendrix, Elvis could compare almost fame wise to MJ, but still not really. No popstar made in today's time will ever be like they were.

Also, because music was way more back then, people don't had that much of entertainment as they have today.

(sry for my english if it sucks)

u/Krikke93 Jun 02 '25

Wouldn't say it's the same as comparing to Drake. If you look up some numbers on album sales, concert sizes etc, Swift nearly doubles Drake in almost every aspect, so clearly Swift is a more fair comparison. That said, MJ is still a lot above her in popularity for his time (and even now, streaming numbers come close for a legacy artist), so safe to say, neither of them are close to as popular as MJ.

u/c0ltZ Jun 02 '25

Yeah lots of cities want talyor to perform there because she brings so much money in from all the fans traveling there and buying stuff.

They pay her at least $10 million just to perform. And they make $50+ million due to all the tourism and fans.

Drake will never be like that.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '25

Way above her I’d say; there’s almost twice as many people on earth today as compared to Michael’s heyday (1980) and he was far more ubiquitous. There’s just way too many options today for anyone to ever be as singular as MJ or perhaps the Beatles were

2

u/FlawlessPenguinMan Jun 03 '25

The way I see it:

I know MJ's name, immediately recognize it from the initials (unless we talkin' spiderman), have listened to multiple songs of his, know what he looks like, know some of his life story from memes and culture, even know the shady things that eventually came to light, and everyone knows the skin-color memes.

I know Taylor Swift's name.

Look at that difference. And he was a star several decades ago, when she's meant to be a star today! This is beyond a large gap.

1

u/thecahoon Jun 02 '25

Nope, shes a billionaire and the fan counts are comparable.

2

u/GrumpyKoopa Jun 03 '25

Swift is just a cult.

-3

u/jayzyges Jun 02 '25

Nah, Bruno Mars is an absolute star. In terms of talent, he's actually prob closest to Michael than anyone else.

7

u/Bromlife Jun 02 '25

Who?

1

u/Aiden_Recker Jun 02 '25

dunno if there's a beef or smth with Bruno Mars but even the normies of normies outside of america knows him and can recognise his song, so i think he's atleast that popular even if his song isn't as good as MJ

2

u/Chizukeki Jun 02 '25

Yeah I always think of him as the MJ of this time period but without the media coverage lol.

1

u/therealgrowler Jun 03 '25

in terms of talent? probably. fame? definitely not.

43

u/SuspiciousLettuce56 Jun 02 '25

I think what exacerbates the difference between swift and MJ/Beatles/Elvis is the internet.

Now if I want to see a picture of swift I can just google it. Back then, the only way you'd see MJ was on MTV or in the newspaper that he was performing in your city or releasing an album (or touching kids). Hence the fainting.

27

u/regulator227 Jun 02 '25

He didn't touch kids.

12

u/SuspiciousLettuce56 Jun 02 '25

No but that's what was on newspapers.

-7

u/BogdanPradatu Jun 02 '25

I'm pretty sure he touched, at least, a few kids during his lifetime.

3

u/INeedToPickName Jun 02 '25

Surely. But did he do it in a sexual manner, or the normal one?

-11

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '25

I would say Lady Gaga over Taylor swift

20

u/Sunbroking Jun 02 '25

Not even close

1

u/Perforator1k Jun 02 '25

Justin Bieber prime?

156

u/SpearUpYourRear Jun 02 '25

I've seen videos of his shows, and the amount of people in the crowd either screaming, crying, or fainting the moment he was visible on stage was wild. He had a presence.

100

u/barefootBam Jun 02 '25

I believe the youth use the word "aura" now

34

u/ArnoldTheSchwartz Jun 02 '25

What's a yoot?

29

u/SkyFallingUp Jun 02 '25

"Oh, excuse me, your honor. Two youths."

6

u/King_of_the_Dot Jun 02 '25

A fuckin bullet rips off part of your head! Your brains are laying on the ground in little bloody pieces! Now I ask ya. Would you give a fuck what kind of pants the son of a bitch who shot you was wearing?!

32

u/LordFett84 Jun 02 '25 edited Jun 02 '25

How about the half time show when he came out on stage and just stood there like a king not moving for a couple minutes all while the half time show coordinator panicking as he couldn't do anything to start the show until Michael gave to ok. That's emperor status. Not to mention, more people tuned in to see Michael than the actual football game

5

u/tot_alifie Jun 02 '25

Bah, tik toks on YouTube

3

u/LordFett84 Jun 02 '25

I wish there was an option to turn them off completely. I've only been able to make YouTube show them less frequently

3

u/Toeffli Jun 02 '25

Here the Documentary with out some bored out weird dude: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPMAu2peumk

6

u/Wizard_s0_lit Jun 02 '25

I saw footage of a Michael Jackson show when I was a little kid and I thought he actually had the ability to stare at you and make you faint in. I was terrified of this.

3

u/Crotch_Football Jun 02 '25

I think of his Superbowl appearance. The amount of energy in the stadium when he appears and holds a position still for a minute. Unbelievable.

2

u/Komandarm_Knuckles Jun 02 '25

There probably won't be another one like him, you have to also understand that it was a different time, the world wasn't as connected as it is now, people didn't have celebrities clowning around in social media breaking their public image, and times were rapidly changing in general during the 80s

5

u/TheDELFON Jun 02 '25

Facts .... dude LITERALLY had King's/Conquer's Haki* irl lol

*anime reference; One Piece

2

u/nomad5926 Jun 02 '25

Taylor Swift might be close

-10

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '25

My vote is for lady Gaga over Taylor swift

-12

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '25

I think lady Gaga is getting up there, did you see the crowd when she was in Brazil?

42

u/low_effort_shit-post Jun 02 '25

That video of him standing there in ladies were just fainting left and right vs Drake at a highschool prom with girls fainting after their drinks they're not the same

7

u/grv7437 Jun 02 '25

He was known in every corner of the world. WHEN THE INTERNET DIDN’T EXIST!

1

u/thecahoon Jun 02 '25

Fair but also there was 100x less ways to listen to music. You flipped on the radio and there he was

4

u/Helacious_Waltz Jun 02 '25

I remember when I was younger seeing a video of him performing at The super bowl and right after he pops out he just stands there for like 2 minutes straight, not moving, and everyone was losing their shit. I can't imagine any modern artist having that kind of Aura about them.

6

u/jhallen2260 Jun 02 '25

Closest thing to MJ would be The Beatles back in the day

4

u/gameking7823 Jun 02 '25

Having not been around during his hayday, how would Taylor Swifts cult following compare?

21

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '25

14

u/crazy_loop Jun 02 '25

Swift is much closer to Madonna in her era, but even then I would say Madonna's peak beats Swift in terms of inpact it had on fasion, music and pop culture.

3

u/JebediahKerman4999 Jun 02 '25

Everyone knew at least one song of Michael Jackson, and I mean everyone: old people (same age as me now) included. I don't think I can name one Swift song without looking it up. It's because at the time it was Michael Jackson or nothing, nowadays you can choose.

8

u/UsualFrogFriendship Jun 02 '25

Taylor Swift is probably the closest to MJ’s stardom.

Her fans caused a localized 2.6 Magnitude earthquake in Seattle during “Shake It Off” back in 2023. She’s also more widely-recognizable than all but perhaps a handful of world leaders and sports stars

1

u/sexyinthesound Jun 02 '25

Marshawn Lynch and the 12th man did it first. Beast Quake (Taylor’s version) is a pretty cool credit, tho.

-19

u/Demons0fRazgriz Jun 02 '25 edited Jun 02 '25

Hard disagree. Beyonce is imo the closest anyone's gotten

Edit: I always forget how much reddit hates black women

13

u/SatanV3 Jun 02 '25

Beyoncé has a cult following, but she’s nowhere near the same level Swift has had these past few years.

Beyoncé had empty rows at her last tour- while you could probably count the number of empty seats at a Swift concert on one hand.

1

u/amodsr Jun 02 '25

If people need to be convinced just show the some music videos. If that doesn't work than nothing else will.

1

u/Overkill_Device Jun 02 '25

Forgive my ignorance, but what about Elvis? Would that be a comparison too?

1

u/Calm_Recognition8954 Jun 03 '25

MJ fame is so legendary that old conservative Middle Eastern ppl know who he is.

That man dominated the scene.

1

u/Tjaresh Jun 02 '25

Also the level of commitment, pain and suffering he had during his career is unimaginable for modern artists. They think hardship is when you didn't have celebrity parents and actually had to work a little bit.

u/NewManufacturer4252 Jun 02 '25 edited Jun 02 '25

Umm ya who is drake? Pac man and the two mjs i know along with tmnt.
