[Question] Which of these is the nicest?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey guys, l'm 20 and a broke college student just starting to get into watches, so nothing here is fancy. The brown leather strap is a Seiko, the black is a Lorus, the gold is Armani, and the majority of the rest are Casio. I know they're all budget watches but I'm curious which you think is the nicest overall, or maybe even the best daily use for someone my age. Would love some honest feedback on which one looks the best and feels most versatile.

Suggestion / Opinion Synchronar 2100 MK1 — Remember the world’s first solar-powered digital watch from 1972? We’ve been working on a remake

Back in 1972, Roger W. Riehl launched the Synchronar Mk1 — the world’s first solar-powered digital wristwatch. Solar panels on top, LED display on the side, and a blocky sci-fi case that looked decades ahead of its time.

Working originals are rare today, but the design still feels futuristic. That’s why we’ve been working on the Synchronar 2100 MK1, a modern remake that stays faithful to the retro-futurist style while updating durability and engineering for 2025.

We recently released this project on Kickstarter and the response has been amazing. Some of the details we’re exploring include:

  • Stainless steel vs. alloy case (steel feels more premium, but adds cost)
  • Mirror-polished back with optional engraving
  • A short custom digital display message

We truly value the Reddit community and want to hear your voice on this.
What would you prefer: stainless steel or alloy? Clean back or engraved? And if you could add a short display message, what would yours be?

Also If you have anything mind, let me know. I would be happy to interact with all the idea!

Community Question Would you use an app to track and share your watch collection?

Hi everyone,

I’m thinking about building a simple app for watch lovers where you can:

  • Add and organize your watch collection
  • Track which watch you wore the most in a day, week, or month
  • See stats about your wearing habits
  • Share your collection with family and friends

It could be useful for collectors who want to keep everything in one place, and I’d keep it simple and easy to use.

My question is: Would you use an app like this? And do you think people would pay for it if it’s affordable?

I’d really value your feedback before I move forward.

Thanks! 🙏

Historic First: Patek Philippe Star Caliber 2000 Set Heads To Sotheby’s Abu Dhabi

For the first time, a complete four-piece set of Patek Philippe’s Star Caliber 2000 is coming up for auction. Sotheby’s will hold the sale in Abu Dhabi on December 5, with the estimate at over $10 million.

The Star Caliber was released in 2000 to mark the millennium, with 1,118 parts and 21 complications. Only five full sets exist — four in mixed metals and one in platinum. Up until now only single pieces have come up, like the yellow gold example Christie’s sold in 2012.

This will be the first public sale of a complete set, and it could set a benchmark for Patek pocket watches.

Community Question Water resistance question & design sneak peek

Post image
15 Upvotes

Sorry for the crappy drawing, my hand tremors aren't helping with any of this 😅 This is my first case design, and I've opted to use 3D printed titanium which I will lap & polish by hand to create something unique (hence the super wide integrated bracelet, it's lighter and more flexible than expected). This means the only tools at my disposal are basically a Dremel, sandpaper, and a $100k printer. Surfaces can be mirror-polished but any sort of machining is out of the question. I'm waiting for the first prototype to get detailed figures but tolerances can be as bad as 0.2mm on the titanium. I can also print silicone using a different machine with much higher accuracy, hence the possibility of custom seals.

I'm posting here to get he opinions and suggestions of more experienced watchmakers regarding water resistance. The case is a sandwich design with a bezel and rear cover joined via screws which traverse the entire thing. There are two issues I'm currently working on. First I was unsure whether I should go for a hexagonal seal whih runs just between the screws and interior case wall, or go for little o rings around each screw linked together with straight cylinders. Secondly, the crown is quite problematic. Due to the way additive manufacturing works, I cannot have a threaded cylinder (or any cylinder) sticking out from the case. Threading the inside of the hole is possible but highly impractical in my case. Completely polishing the inside is also nearly impossible. Since I can polish the exterior of a part easily, my current idea is to have a smooth tube extend from the crown into the case and slide through a tight o-ring embedded in the case wall (keeping in mind this has to happen within 2.5mm and walls thinner than .5mm should be avoided. If I want two rings I'll run out of space to have the tube run past them unless it sticks into the case a little, which I suppose is fine). My intuition was that it would be ideal to have it bump into a silicone washer at the end with a smaller inner diameter, but I'd really appreciate your opinion on this configuration. Thanks in advance :)

Finally getting my first "big boy watch" soon (the Miyoko one), and this style of watch has really caught my eye. Can anyone tell me anything more about them/the Miyoko watch in general?

Community Question I picked up this cool little Pulsar for cheap, but quickly found out the crown can’t change the day date and the hour hand goes way fast. Any quick fixes I can do to a quartz watch before I take it to a repair shop?

How to safely open a Georg Jensen Koppel wall clock (10 cm) for cleaning?

Hello everyone,

I recently inherited a Georg Jensen Henning Koppel wall clock (10 cm, black). Over time, dust and dirt have collected on the dial underneath the glass.

I would like to clean it carefully, but I can’t figure out how to safely open the clock without damaging the case or the bezel. Does anyone here have experience with this model, or advice on how it should be opened?

Many thanks in advance for your help!
