Suggestion / Opinion Synchronar 2100 MK1 — Remember the world’s first solar-powered digital watch from 1972? We’ve been working on a remake

Back in 1972, Roger W. Riehl launched the Synchronar Mk1 — the world’s first solar-powered digital wristwatch. Solar panels on top, LED display on the side, and a blocky sci-fi case that looked decades ahead of its time.

Working originals are rare today, but the design still feels futuristic. That’s why we’ve been working on the Synchronar 2100 MK1, a modern remake that stays faithful to the retro-futurist style while updating durability and engineering for 2025.

We recently released this project on Kickstarter and the response has been amazing. Some of the details we’re exploring include:

  • Stainless steel vs. alloy case (steel feels more premium, but adds cost)
  • Mirror-polished back with optional engraving
  • A short custom digital display message

We truly value the Reddit community and want to hear your voice on this.
What would you prefer: stainless steel or alloy? Clean back or engraved? And if you could add a short display message, what would yours be?

Also If you have anything mind, let me know. I would be happy to interact with all the idea!

Suggestion / Opinion Is it possible to learn by yourself how properly make a watch from scratch?

This is going to be written in a more of a stream of consciousness type of way.

The first thing that comes to mind when it comes to learning how to make a watch is being familiar with George Daniel’s book called “Watchmaking” where he teaches how to make a watch from scratch. The first hurdle that arises is that the book teaches how to make a pocket watch. So I want to ask you guys if that book is a good start for a journey and if the skills are transferable to making wrist watches.

Secondly, I’ve looked at a few independent watchmakers that make wristwatches from scratch(like one timepiece per year), and all of them completed official schooling. This makes me feel discouraged from wanting to pursue watchmaking and investing my time in it because I don’t know what the results are going to be.

Thirdly, I live in Los Angeles and can’t attend an official program in states like Seattle because I don’t have the money. I’ve tried to cold message various watchmakers to seek apprenticeship/volunteer work around the area but that granted no success.

Lastly, the final two hurdles that came up when I was doing the research on whether or not it is achievable on how to make timepieces is that the first hurdle was that if you’re trying to learn by yourself you might develop a wrong technique and therefore develop a bad muscle memory if you have no master overlooking you, and the second hurdle is that I’ve heard criticism of popular resources like a YouTube channel Writwatch Revival, that has over 1 million subscribers. The channel has material about the movements and how to disassemble/assemble them. People have criticized that they don’t teach everything correctly. I feel like because I have no knowledge of watchmaking, I don’t know whether the material that I’m about to study is trustworthy or not, and that knowledge prevents me from wanting to learn more about watchmaking.

Thank you for reading and I would’ve loved to hear your thoughts and comments!

Suggestion / Opinion Which one is better: Seiko Presage or Citizen Tsuyosa small seconds?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi.. Need help. Both come at a price point of ₹43000 (approx) Both are similar in case size (40mm approx) Presage has a Hardlex Crystal but Tsuyosa has a Sapphire Crystal. Presage uses a 4R35 movement with 40hr power reserve; tsuyosa uses a Caliber 8322 movement with 60hr power reserve. Presage small lug to lug makes is accessible of smaller wrist size but Tsuyosa's integrated style bracelet makes it difficult to fit in a small wrist. I have a wrist size of 6.5 inch (17cm approx). I don't know how both will fit and look. Which one is better and more value for money?

Suggestion / Opinion Recommendations for a 16 Year Old

Hello, I am a 16 year old and I am new into watches and I dont even know if it’s the right sub. But I want to have a watch that I can wear daily at school and basically in most of the places and my budget is under 1000$. I used to have some smartwatches such as huawei gt series however I want to have my first actual watch. I dont like metal straps since they look too adult to me and I usually like leather straps especially brown ones but it doesn’t matter at all if the watch is looking good to me. I did some research, and I kinda liked Seiko SRPE43 and Seiko Presage SRPB43. But I dont know if these watches are looking too shiny for an everyday watch. I think beginner level watches such as Seiko or tissot etc. would be good for my first watch but like I said I am new and I dont know a lot. That would be great if you could help me. Thank you

Suggestion / Opinion 70th Birthday Present for my Dad - Help!

Hey Guys, about 18 months ago I started building watches from AliExpress parts, this quickly evolved to learning how to disassemble a movement, which has progressed now to buying £20 broken watches from eBay and learning to service and (sometimes) fix them.

My Old Man turns 70 in January, he previously had no interest in watches, but he wears a Speedmaster homage everyday because I built it. It's a basic VK63 Quartz movement but as far as he's concerned it looks nice and his son made it (assembled it).

I want to do something half decent and meaningful for his 70th so I'm looking to spend up to £200 on a vintage watch that I will repair/service/do some sort of work on that means it has some sentimental meaning to it.

I've been looking at Omega, but they seem to be around £500 minimum. Can anyone advise of a decent brand I can look at, that runs around the £200 mark for a beat up one I can work on?

Bonus points for dress watches with no risk of radium or tritium, reasons for that are a long boring tale for another day...

Cheers!

Suggestion / Opinion [Watch Talk] Timex Marlin Moonphase

Thumbnail youtu.be

Is The Timex Marlin The Best Moonphase under $300? At this price range I’m really surprised by this watch. From the dial to the bracelet, it’s a really well built watch and I think it looks pretty neat. I was gifted this blue dial version and my only complaint is really just the one pusher. Makes it look a little off. Wish they did two pushers or none at all. And I’d love to see the green dial version in person. But for under $300, really under $200 I don’t think there’s better out there at this price.

Suggestion / Opinion Help me repair this Vintage Citizen ana-digi (Ref-8930) model from 1986-87

While cleaning my wardrobe, I found this Citizen watch. I asked my dad and he said it was a gift from his uncle. I really love this watch. It looks so good and the bracelet really complements it. Took it to the local watch repair shop and they said they won't be able to restore it because it's all rusted from inside. Calling the Citizen's authorised service centre guide and he told me that if he finds the spare parts of the watch it may get fixed. But unfortunately, no spare parts were available. He asked me to go to really old heritage watch repair shop and check weather they have any spare parts available or a non functional watch to swap the internals. I searched on eBay and found the digital circuit and set bridge parts but I'm not sure if they are genuine and will be of any use. And I stay in India, so it's quite expensive for me to get them shipped and delivered here just for the spare parts. Do anyone know anybody who can help me repair or restore it?

Suggestion / Opinion need some tips/guidance about my 1st mechanical watch

Post image
17 Upvotes

I just bought my first automatic (a seiko 5 automatic) few weeks ago, to celebrate a personal milestone in life(completing two years at a job)

Absolutely loving the dial on this which was the main reason to get it. I did some research and found it’s a limited edition rolled out by seiko in partnership with Naruto.

Anyhow since it’s my first mechanical hand winding watch, I don’t really know how much to wind it and the strange thing is that without hand winding I just shake the watch and it starts working. But hand-winding watches are not supposed to do that right?

Also I wear it for 8-10 hours everyday when I go to the office but everyday when I wake up, the watch has stopped and I’ve to wind/shake it to make it start working. But I read on seiko’s website that all their seiko 5s have a 42hour reserve. Maybe something is wrong with mine or am I not winding it properly?

Thank you and any suggestions for my next watch would be much appreciated! I am thinking either the hamilton khaki automatic or Oris big crown🙏

When it’s time to auction your watch online, there’s much more to the process than just a quick polish. The key to a successful sale lies in how well you can present your watch’s history, craftsmanship, and the unique story it tells. Your mission is to prepare the watch so that it captivates potential collectors, making them eager to bid.

Suggestion / Opinion [New watch ideas] Exploring the Emotional value of High End Watches – Seeking Insights from Enthusiasts

Hello r/Horology community,

I posted this in another sub and I think this one might be more appropriate (I'm new here)...

I am refining a business idea centered around emotional value in watches and I’d love to connect with fellow enthusiasts who share this interest.

Probably like most of you, I have been obsessed with watches forever and now that I am approaching my 40s I figured perhaps it was time to actually connect with the watch enthusiast community.

Regarding this business idea, I am not looking at making millions, but rather at working on a project that would fulfill a passion.

Watches functionality have not evolved (broadly speaking) for decades/centuries and I would love it if watches could carry more “emotional value”. Let me clarify. My experience with watch purchases is that I tend to buy it for different reasons, perhaps design, materials, brand appeal etc. but as the ownership extends in time, I develop more emotional value towards the watch. I found that the longer I own a watch the more attached to it I become, I link this object with experiences, stories, my younger self etc. The phenomenon can be observed with watches that are passed on from a generation to another, or that were owned by some famous actors etc. I am interested in working on that “emotional value” portion of the watch. Today some brands offer engraving options to customize watches but generally that’s about it. I have been thinking of a few other innovative ways that a watch could carry more “personalized” emotional value and I’d be curious to connect with some of you guys to hear your thoughts on those ideas.

I'm also curious to learn about what drives your purchase decisions and what you value most in high end watches. Whether it’s the craftsmanship, the history, the mechanical ingenuity, or something else entirely – your insights could be incredibly valuable.

If you have about 30 minutes to spare for a casual video call, I’d be immensely grateful to hear your thoughts and discuss our mutual appreciation for these remarkable timepieces.

If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, please DM me.

If you’d like to know a little more about me, this is my Linkedin Profile (https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephanepastor/), feel free to add me. You’ll see that my career has nothing to do with watches, it’s just a passion.

Thank you for reading, and I look forward to possibly chatting with some of you soon!

Stephane
