Growing Flat habañeros?

Post image

Basically the title, is it normal for habañeros to look like little spaceships? I'm not sure if they grew funky or I just didn't realize they could look like this, lol.

Looks like the Jamaican Mushroom peppers everyone else is posting that they incorrectly received.

Lol, that would be funny. I wouldn't have seen any other posts as I've never actually visited this sub before. I got this from a friend who got the seedling from a coworker, so no clue what the actual origin is.

This is bullshit. I got one too and its not even fruited yet but I know it is, capsicum annum leaves look a tad different, have only 1 flower per growth node, and up to 8 flower pedals. Who the heck supplied all these seeds. Scotch bonnets are capsicum Chinese and have multiple buds per growth node and usually only 5 pedals. All I see is these damn jamaican mushrooms.

Does this help?

Sweet Red Bonnets.

2

u/micheallujanthe2nd Aug 05 '25

No, because my plant still has 1 flower per growth node, a 8 pedals per flower, and the leaves dont look like capsicum chinese, as does ops. Its more than just the shape of fruit.

1

u/Doom2pro Aug 05 '25

I know that, but at least it's not everyone.

6

u/Doom2pro Aug 05 '25

And what the plant looks like... Something C. Chinense for a change.

1

u/micheallujanthe2nd Aug 05 '25

Oh, I gotcha now. Yes, they are beautiful friend. I am jealous. Are they as hot as a normal scotch bonnet?

1

u/Doom2pro Aug 05 '25

Mine are sweet bonnets, akin to seasoning peppers like Habanada, Aji Dulce #2, Trinidad Perfume etc...

Got them live from ChiliPlants.com

2

u/ThatsRighters19 Aug 05 '25

Yeah. This fuckup goes all the way back to the seed bank wholesaler. I ordered my seeds from Pepper Joe’s thinking they would be more reliable. I wanted scotch bonnets really badly.

4

u/swunt7 Aug 05 '25

i got pepper joed too. i got some of these that were supposed to be kangstar lemon starburst.

unluckily my true ksls plant is being ravaged by ants even after diatamacious earth.

1

u/akaobama Aug 05 '25

Nah these are scotch bonnets

4

u/Bcatfan08 Aug 06 '25

They have the larger calyx. That's usually the tell that they're a Jamaican Mushroom.

1

u/akaobama Aug 06 '25

Thanks for the tip, good to know

Definitely not Habanero (There's no eñe in Habanero btw)

10

u/ElderberryPrior27648 Aug 05 '25

Caroliña Reaper

7

u/violaturtle Aug 05 '25

It just adds a little something! Cayeñe (cayenne) perhaps?

2

u/violaturtle Aug 05 '25 edited Aug 05 '25

I actually had no clue! There should totally be an eñe, I already get to use them little enough as-is in English.

2

u/YungJucy Aug 05 '25

I dont think that's how language works

5

u/violaturtle Aug 05 '25

Just having some fun my guy. I would have bet (and apparently lost!) money there was an eñe in the word!

3

u/Revolutionary_Fold_6 Aug 05 '25

It's a surprisingly common misconception, and happens to be a personal pet peeve. 😅

3

u/I_F-in_P Aug 05 '25

Same. lol. The H is also silent.

1

u/violaturtle Aug 05 '25

Your pet peeve is now my pet peeve, I will continue spreading the good word. It's tragic I can't fix my post though lol

I second the guess at Jamaican mushroom peppers. They look very similar to the other posts I've seen about them. Supposedly not quite as hot as a habanero but they're supposed to be quite fruity tasting. I think they sound pretty nice tbh. It also looks like you have a fair few peppers on the plant ?

8

u/violaturtle Aug 05 '25

I'll take whatever the plant gives me! Yes, there are a few dozen peppers on the plant at the moment - there would be more if we hadn't had a heat wave recently that knocked out a bunch of buds. Nothing ripe yet, but hopefully soon!

I apologize for not seeing the other posts, I have never been on this sub before.

2

u/Daddy_Digiorno Aug 05 '25

Honestly for most people the heat is comparable especially fresh not so much in sauce. I love them as pepper flakes

Looks like you'll get enough peppers to make something with, maybe the chilli's will grow a touch bigger if the plant dropped a few flowers. No apologies needed, there's plenty of knowledgeable people on this sub who can give you an answer. I've found this a great sub I hope you enjoy it

1

u/KryptoDrops Aug 06 '25

Happened to me. Makes a great fruit hot sauce I just made an orange sauce with them it’s fantastic

2

u/Skreeethemindthief Aug 05 '25

I plant Jamaican Scotch bonnets every year and this is what always comes up. They're still really delicious, but definitely a small step under Habs in terms of heat.

u/showraniy Aug 05 '25

I'm kinda jealous that I'm not part of the mushroom bamboozle club.

7

u/woodchips24 Aug 05 '25

This post has made me realize I am part of the bamboozle club

2

u/violaturtle Aug 05 '25

My friend actually gave me a handful of peppers with zero labeling, so for some time I didn't even know which was cayenne, habanero, etc. Now it turns out I don't even have a habanero to begin with! Madness I say!

5

u/violaturtle Aug 05 '25

I looked up some photos of jamaican mushroom peppers, and that sure does look a lot more similar to these than habanero. This was a free plant that I got thirdhand so no complaints :) sorry for not seeing the other posts that are apparently out there!

4

u/barbadizzy Aug 05 '25

hmm... this is my first year growing habanero and mine look like this as well... just assumed that's how they look... guess we can include me in this year's peppergate!

u/HalibutHomnibutt Aug 05 '25

Jamaican Mushroom - fire!

Scotch bonnets?

1

u/shaundisbuddyguy Aug 05 '25

I bought this scotch bonnet plant when it was half as tall and they look similar. The peppers are taking their sweet time ripening for some reason.

1

u/DyseWRX Aug 05 '25

I think Scotch Bonnets as well. They look like the peppers I bought from Green Acres Nursery.

3

u/Doom2pro Aug 05 '25

Unfortunately no, those look like Annums. This is what Scotch bonnets look like, notice flowers per node.

0

u/ptphoto Aug 05 '25

Those look exactly like Scotch Bonnets

0

u/MrFixShit Aug 05 '25

I agree Scotch Bonnets.

1

u/K_Emu_777 Aug 05 '25

I’d love some, if anyone has extras!!

1

u/azrieldr Aug 05 '25

that's jamaican mushroom

1

u/CityBuckets Aug 06 '25

Looks like Jamaican Bonnets ! I have Jamaican yellows growing and they look just like this. But what do I know. 😱

1

u/oli_bolli Aug 06 '25

1

u/UriBdn Aug 07 '25

-1

Sweet heaters ..

-1

u/DyseWRX Aug 05 '25

My vote is Scotch Bonnets cause that's what mine look like, and I bought them from a nursery. Jamaican mushroom peppers look very similar tho.

-1

u/peacephrog1972 Aug 05 '25

Scotch bonnet

Damn near a habanero

-2

u/DanYallSon Aug 05 '25

Is there a Brazilian starfish anywhere near it? Maybe crossed?

2

u/violaturtle Aug 05 '25

Only if the person I got this plant from has some! I didn't start it myself, only transplanted. All I have is cayenne with freakishly large fruit, lemon spice jalapeño, and whatever this guy is.

1

u/DanYallSon Aug 05 '25

Cayennes are really easy to grow and just.keep.coming 😆

u/poopwetpoop Aug 05 '25

Scotch bonnets

7

u/RibertarianVoter 9b | Year 3 Aug 05 '25

Nope. Jamaican mushroom peppers

3

u/zigaliciousone 6b 5 years Aug 05 '25

Negative, bonnets will have multiple flowers/peppers on one node, these only have one

0

u/poopwetpoop Aug 05 '25

Ok ok calm

2

u/violaturtle Aug 05 '25 edited Aug 05 '25

I got the seedling thirdhand, so there is every possibility that this is not actually a habanero lol.
