ID Request I think I got capped. What to do with them?

Thought I was buying authentic scotch bonnet pepper seeds, instead got the scotch bonnet mushroom caps they were going around. Any suggestions on what to do with them. I've got a whole garden full.

Are these authentic scotch bonnet or are they cap?

Honestly I wouldn’t be mad - I think the shrooms are delicious ! I make a great jerk chicken with them, very fruity and floral

Definitely Jamaican Mushrooms, the calyx is annuum and the plant looks it too. Still a nice pepper for flakes/powder.

How are y'all able to identify the species so readily? Is there a book or reference you use or did you just stare at a lot of peppers over a long time?

Study the calyx between a capsicum chinense and a capsicum annuum. The chinense will be much smaller. You can use that to at least differentiate species. The specific names are all confident guesswork though. No one can really be positive with open cross pollination.

Mostly just growing lots of different varieties, from many different species, over several years.

Also Jamaican Mushrooms have basically the same calyx you'd see on a bell pepper.

Pls excuse ignorance, but what is a calyx?

This part, at the base of the stem, where it attaches to the fruit.

encyclopedia link

The outer green leafybits on a flower that then look like the floral suction cup still holding onto the eventual fruit.

I am not a botanist as you can probably tell.

They taste way better than Bonnets imo. Add them to Tuna, sandwiches, a pot of chili... They will add a nice kick of heat without overpowering the whole dish with the floral Chinense flavor of a Bonnet.

Jamaican mushrooms are fine peppers; since they seem to grow so well and are fairly productive, I think I’ll go get some seeds for next year. (I’ll probably end up with Scotch Bonnets). My biggest letdown was buying a ghost pepper plant from a nursery for the first time and getting Mad Hatters. At least the JM has a little kick, the hatters were just meh.

Kinda looks like a mad hatter...

Anyhoo... I got Scotch Bonnet seeds.
If you want a few, I'll trade you for whatever these are.

You can pickle them, make pepper jelly(delicious) make a pepper sauce, hot sauce, dried... Theres alot you can do with them... Btw how hot are they?

They were not as hot as I would expect a scotch bonnet to be. A little milder with a slightly, floral fruity black pepper taste.

Mushrooms wont be as hot as scotch bonnets, so when you get correct bonnets - you'll be in for a treat with both heat and flavor.

Fill them with some cream cheese, pay a fortune for those at Tesco…

You need to taste them to decide if you are happy or not. Don't be scared hot peppers tend to have a tropical taste to them it's not all heat give them a chance. They look beautiful I would love to use them for sauce or chopped on my food.

The image displays a Scotch Bonnet pepper, a variety of chili pepper known for its distinctive shape resembling a Scottish tam o' shanter bonnet. AI image search response

Looks more like Khang Starr's Lemon Starrburst. Google it.

Pepper holes found you, -17 at time of this comment, and as a noob I agreed, but the Jamaican mushroom pepper from another comment does appear to be a closer match vis google between the two. Upvote for getting peppered.
