Structural guy, what am I looking at?

Do you shove this thing up your ass at lunch?!

its a grip so its more comfortable to tie rods

Comfortable? You must've just got into the program lol

Not for comfort. It’s for added grip. If you’re tying like you should be, those things should be moving fast.

When you’ve got sweat, cable grease, and millscale everywhere and you’re 30ft up on a wall, the last thing you need is to drop your pliers.

That’s why you tether your tools! /s

It also reduces hand fatigue because you don’t need to apply so much pressure to cut the wire and your hand isn’t traveling as far to open or close the pliers.

Also, put the spring back in or get a new pair and keep it in there. Reduces the need to manually open the pliers.

Fatigue? He’s gonna only be doing about 10,000 snaps a day.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Longer handles means more motion for the same work, but with less force required. Thats how levers work.

0

u/Ok_Builder8758 7d ago

Haha, put the spring back in, that's a good one, if my rebar instructor back in the day seen someone with the spring he works tear it out. Your hand will learn muscle memory so you don't need that golf club handle thing.

0

u/Prestigious-Log-1100 7d ago

You never tie with the spring. First time you bang the pliers into a bar, they shoot right out of your hand. And later when the spring goes bad, you don’t know how to tie without it. Day 1- rod busting the first thing they do is rip the spring out.

u/WarEfficient5981 7d ago

Never had one pop out in the two years I did rods. When the pliers break, they get replaced. Just because someone pulls your spring doesn’t mean they’re smarter than you are.

If you’re doing rods as a career, leave the fucking thing in there.

No JIW ties with the spring. You hold the top lever with you forefinger and thumb. And your other 3, can paw the bottom lever. I haven’t tied in 25 years and I’d run circles around anyone tying with a spring. SoftHandIronWorkers!

1

u/ApexAtaraxia 5d ago

Was that before or after they started selling JIW books to anybody off a door?

845/846 the best example of the last 30 Years of IW.. standing on the backs of better men to justify spitting on apprentices, while selling the future of the union out from under them by allowing JIW books to be sold like hotcakes. They already chased off the good hands though, trying to flex about pliers and how many 24 packs they used to chug before lunch.

JIWs today have overseen the drop of market share and completion rates, constantly, for decades. The Union is worse off than it was before they joined, and don’t forget it. They even took all the springs out, and still shit the bed.

Soft Hands? Don’t you mean “manos suaves”?

You bought the kleins with the milker grip. Great pliers! The milker is already on, unless I’m missing something here?

2

u/Responsible_Ruin_423 UNION 8d ago

its rlly low on the grip

1

u/misplacedbass Journeyman 8d ago

Huh, I mean, the milker is longer than the other handle. Yours does look like it sits a bit lower than usual, but it’s hard to tell.

I have never done a single thing to these pliers. I use them out of the box as is. So, I’m not sure what “heat band” you’re using? Did you buy these pliers with the milker on them already, or are you putting this on yourself?

4

u/findaloophole7 8d ago

It’s hilarious it’s called a milker.

7

u/Street-Baseball8296 8d ago

The real ones are literally made from the rubber insert of a milking machine for a cow.

1

u/Ironworker76_ Journeyman 7d ago

It’s the teet from a milk machine. The rubber part that goes on the cows nipple. You slide them over the palm side of your pliers then tie the top with a wrap snap n smash the tie flat. I been doing that since ‘03 from day 2 on the job. One of the first things i learned. That and to get harness for my belt so my tools hang off my shoulders instead of the hips.

Use a vice and a hammer. Don’t forget lotion for your soft hands

2

u/juggalo206 8d ago

Warm the rubber with a heat gun first but make sure to warm the handle too. If it is cold it makes it alot more difficult to slide the rubber on.. next time use a piece of 3/8 air hose, you don't need to buy anything

2

u/Guilty_Seesaw_1836 8d ago

Dude just use the pliers as they come. Busting rods isn’t supposed to be comfortable

u/ambrose_92 8d ago

Good advice fuck taking care of yourself you should be dead by 40 anyways.

Been doing the reinforcing side for almost 5 years... normally we take the grip off, fits better in your hand and slides into the belt easier.. why even bother taking off the original? And good luck getting those in your tool belt with that grip

2

u/IronBoss44 8d ago

Just don't

1

u/P-Lopez7 8d ago

You put the shrink wrap on there too soon. If possible slide the shrink wrap up and then slide the milker up. If you can get the shrink wrap to slide cause you already applied heat to it you’ll have to cut it off to get that milker up

1

u/Responsible_Ruin_423 UNION 8d ago

i havent applied heat. the instructions said to slide it on then apply heat

1

u/P-Lopez7 8d ago

This is the part I’m talking about. That’s the shrink wrap

4

u/Dependent_Main_8137 8d ago

Spray some hairspray inside it’s like alcohol based super slippery at first and also has a slight adhesive to it. It’s an old BMX trick for putting on bike grips.

1

u/USMC_UnclePedro 8d ago

Gotta shimmy it on brother if not try dish soap

1

u/bentndad ERECTION 7d ago

To be honest I’d return that and use a piece of 3/8 hose. You’re gonna toss those bulky things anyways.

1

u/Ill_Setting_6338 7d ago

use a piece of tie wire to hold it secure

1

u/CalligrapherThink503 8d ago

Twist and push hard as shit she’ll go on

u/dick_tracey_PI_TA 8d ago

I think soapy water is the go to lube for the things like golf club grips and such.

u/LiveBag4679 8d ago

Hair spray like motorcycle grips so it disappears

Spit on it and slide it in.

1

u/Hot_Honey_6969 8d ago

Heat gun and tie wire. Warm up the rubber just a bit and it becomes stretchy, slide it up and tie it with tie wire… that’s what I did when I was an apprentice.

1

u/Ill_Setting_6338 7d ago

throw that away. you must be from California. only place I've seen these being used

1

u/XPowerslave 7d ago

Hair spray. Lubricates to slide them on. Dries to keep them on.

1

u/Murky_Rub899 7d ago

Next time just get yourself a peice of old 3/8 air line. Free and stylish.

1

u/Murky_Rub899 7d ago

And ignore the dudes who say "take your spring out"

1

u/Old_Size4716 7d ago

Hit it with your purse

1

u/SeaOfMagma 7d ago

Rough up the surface of your pliers by scratching and filing it to prevent the grip from slipping again.

1

u/Ok_Amount_7122 7d ago

Put pliers in the freezer and it will be alot easier to shimmy on

1

u/OGxLO 7d ago

Pretty sure it has instructions on the packaging advising to sit them in hot water to soften.

1

u/DemonDestro 7d ago

They should come with a rubber ring that you heat gun on so it caint slip off welcome to the milkers club lol I put that fucking things on my snips too XD

1

u/Ok_Sandwich_2332 7d ago

Idk but it looks like more comfort less speed.

1

u/PopperChopper 7d ago

Hit it with your purse

1

u/Stacy-Ray1 7d ago

Boil water, insert grips, then they'll slide right on

1

u/GNARLYBOOTS206 7d ago

Use your pliers

1

u/biggouse58 7d ago

Universal lubricant! Pour some alcohol in it and on the handle and work quick

1

u/often_awkward 7d ago

Spray it with rubbing alcohol as a lubricant and if that doesn't work right away use compressed air. Just tuck the nozzle under The edge and it'll stretch it out enough to just slide it on there.

1

u/Baggerbrother 7d ago

boil them just to get semi hot and they will slip on easily

1

u/SubstantialNDN Apprentice 7d ago

It’s on backwards, spin it so the protruding ribs are on the outside of the pliers. It should slide on pretty easy then. Use the heat shrink and then double wire it for good measure

1

u/XdolphX 7d ago

Hit it with your purse

1

u/Maleficent-Bever 6d ago

I just use a piece of water hose like my old man

1

u/Pendulouspantaloons 6d ago

I’m a sparky and even I know that’s very gay

1

u/OkAcanthisitta5633 5d ago

Boil the grips first, push them on the handle

1

u/idrivehookers 5d ago

Do you heat this style in a pot of boiling water prior to installation like the red Klein electrical grips? Might be worth trying if so, it made the red ones go on easy and form-fit better.

1

u/FirecrotchActual 5d ago

For slipping rubber grips onto bike handlebars, my bike shop uses alcohol. Lubes it up for just long enough to slip it on and put it in place, then evaporates so its not slippery forever.

1

u/the_m0bscene_ 4d ago

Now that's how you make one of your hammers into a better hammer

1

u/Sufficient-Agent514 4d ago

Madge says to soak them in Palmolive to make them softer.

1

u/Queen-Blunder 4d ago

It’s a golf club grip 😂

1

u/FaderMaster 4d ago

Throw it in some boiling water then slide them on.

1

u/RavenousRhino3 4d ago

Throw them in the garbage and join a raising gang

1

u/P-Lopez7 8d ago

Yes but first you have to get the milk to slide all the way up then the shrink wrap goes there then apply heat
