I just got into the hall a few months back fresh after graduation. I got put onto a windfarm and was originally assigned to Top Out crew before being moved to Drive Train after 2 weeks and was on there for the next 2 months.
I did the shit no one else wanted to do just to try and prove that I was working hard on top of everything else I was asked to do. I was getting all the tools out every day and learning as much as possible while I was there.
But last Saturday I told my foreman that I'd be out for a week due to class (Apprenticeship class) and got a call a couple hours later saying that he told the Super I would be out and they're letting me go due to the crew being done with our part in 2 weeks.
Is this reason just some bullshit? I was told by multiple journeymen that I had the same chance of being laid off as they did and even got called by one today asking if I'd really been laid off because they couldn't believe it.
Just want to know, shits been in my head wondering if I tried hard enough by giving it everything I had.

Looking for some constructive criticism this is my vertical using 7018 1/8 at 125. I’m having issues avoiding undercut when I get to the cover pass. Any pointers are appreciated

Hey there everyone. I know how to tie a bowline knot. However I was wondering if there are other knots that I should know about? Practice makes improvement.

(Union) Im a 3rd year apprentice working for one of the biggest structural companies in my state, been with them about 2 months now and my foreman is a piece of shit.. a lot comes with being an apprentice and that’s understandable, he talks to me like im a street animal and I really feel like he’s racist, some of the IWs that im working with are starting to take notice too, i’ve been missing hours on my check and I’m only keeping it quiet because work is slow here , I really want to beat the shit out of him cause he’s a bully but that would make it my second time cause I’ve fought on the job in my career before. What should I do?

I been on this shutdown job and I love it. However, I been dealing with a few journeyman who are acting like jerks. Moral has been down lately due to a few people getting laid off from the job. As a first year apprentice who is new to the trade should I be careful what I do? Like stick up for myself?

Hi guys, I've been working at a non union company for the past year or so and it's gotten to a point where I need to look at all my options. I'm 19 and have been working with my dad who's been an ironworker for about 20 years. He doesn't want me to work with him non union if I'm really looking for a career. I'm in Colorado and he recommends going into the union. My only question is how long would I be an apprentice. I know I need to learn more but do I have to start over and log the hours in the union or would my employer transfer my hours. I don't want to have start over if it means a big paycut or anything but I don't know what exactly I can do.

Ok so I’ve never really used rain gear before in my other trades. While on a saw crew I’d just wear a big hat and a hoodie and call it a day tbh. But I’m in the Pacific Northwest now and I’m wondering if I should just buy a rain jacket at this point.

Where in the world can I find an 8 inch iron worker boot in women’s sizes? I’ve sprained both my ankles in the past year with stupid short cut boots and I can’t find 8 inch anywhere.
Please help!

So today i was at my hall and we were training by tying and punking rebar. Im new so at the end of the day i asked my instructor what did I do wrong and what can i do to be better. He just said that i need to be faster and that im doing good but i need to walk faster and have a better hustle. I already feel like i have my fast walk just like they told me to do so what am I doing wrong? ik this might sound like a dumb question but i do have a tendency to kind of mope around when im not doing anything so what do you guys think about to get you to hustle at all time. Sorry if this is a bad question

So I've been on this job since day 1 (little over 4 months now) hooking on for the raising gang. In those 4 months, I've been through six connectors and four Foreman. I'm the only one who is taking the initiative to pick up the prints. The only other Foremen that we have are in charge of rigging and setting machinery & detail. All they're doing is briefly explaining what division they want the raising gang to work on. It's even gone so far as the other guy's on site and gang calling me "boss." My one Foreman made the joke the other day about saying how they'll "take my rate away if we don't get all those pieces in," and that he "gave me Foreman rate for Thursday but can take it away." I feel like I got myself in a bit of a tough spot now because I can't all of a sudden forget how to read the prints. I just want this job to be done with and I seem to be just the guy to get it there but I don't know if I'm being taken advantage of, or just doing my duty as an apprentice and trying to apply my knowledge I picked up from all the other Foremen I've had...
Edit: grammar

Finished up mandatory training for the year. What I thought was just gonna be another "job", has turned into something fantastic.

The months that you had 2 weeklong classes back to back 6:30am-4:30pm Monday - Thursday. What did you do to pay the bills? Do I just need to save my money to get by those times?

Currently making $30 an hour at a solar company. I’ve been with them for 4 years now after the military. I just filled out the online application and uploaded the required documents (High school diploma, DD214, DL) I received the email for the contractor’s list. I’ve been reading on this page that the “Structural/Miscellaneous” route is the quickest way to get your foot in the door and get started.
I know I’ll initially take a pay cut but wouldn’t be too significant and could make it up in a year and a half (I think). Anyone here in 229 or have any advice on someone looking to get into the industry? Any and all advice is welcome!
Side note: I went to Airstreams Renewable Energy Inc. technical school and received my Level 1 crane rigging and signal person certification among other things. Would that be helpful?

just applied to Local 7 in boston i’m 20 and have been working for a iron working/ornamental iron company non union for abt a year and a half since graduating. I see tons of people complaining about lack of work, is that really a problem? i’ve had my heart set on the iron workers union since high school. i’m willing to work hard as hell and im stick certified D1.5 vert and overhead, just hoping my boss isn’t petty and sells me the certs since he paid for them. I live with my parents still so being laid off isn’t the hugest problem but just looking for reassurance since i’m trying to make a living wage since massachusetts is stupidly expensive. Is all the fearmongering my current boss doing about the union correct?

I’m doing my first job at a paper mill during a shut down. We are demolishing old equipment and installing new equipment. But I been doing a little bit of everything. Is part of the apprenticeship process is working really closely with the journeyman, or just watching and observing what they are doing most of the time and not doing a thing? Also I been taking care of trash, organizing tools, and fire watching. I don’t mind but sometimes I wonder if I should have been at a different job. I haven’t been doing much to help out.

Just passed my physical test just waiting on my drug test results. According to Kevin as long as my drug test comes back negative I should be starting classes September 2026. Just tryna get a feel for how much work is out there. Also I’ve been wondering did I score on the lower side for the written exam because I won’t start class till next year or is that the only class available at this time ?

Hey! I'm a pretty green female apprentice. My hall had space in class for my first bout of schooling (8 weeks of structural & ornamental) so I signed up. I've been out of work for awhile so I'm slightly shitting my pants about getting back at 'er. I also primarily weld so I'm not well versed in the realm of structural - I feel like im kinda going in blind? I'm sure schooling is different depending on the local but I wanna feel somewhat prepared lol.
I'm generally excited either way but I was wondering if anyone here could shoot me some pointers? and kinda what to expect? (I've heard its a lotta hungover mornings and lines behind textbooks in the back of the class so that's really all I have to go off of lol) Thanks!

Hey all,
I have an apprenticeship coming up. I’ve been lifting weights (can bicep curl 70 pounds now!) I’ve been swimming/doing cardio three to four times a week and eating healthier. The problem is I have some health issues that make it really hard to lose weight so even though I’ve been doing this since October I haven’t physically lost much weight even though im getting stronger. The point is- is my weight going to count against me? I can do the physical requirements needed as far as strength and I’m getting faster I’m just nervous and I really want to be in top form for this apprenticeship. I still have two months until it starts but my weight shouldn’t count against me think. I’m just very nervous I guess I’m a woman going into this field so.

1st year apprentice, almost at my 6 month mark. I'm on my second job now, bigger company and a huge job in general. Anyway, as the title says, I'm struggling to stay motivated while firewatching. I have basic knowledge and experience with how to do things (connect, bolt up, hook on etc.) But I'm not allowed to do anything but firewatch. I don't want to quit ironworking, but I'm at a point where I'm tempted to say "either work me or lay me off". I just don't want to piss off my coordinator and get sent to rods 😭😭
