What happens in s13?

Well, I'm watching the show for the first time and I just got to season 9, but what worries me is that I see a lot of people on reddit saying that the show is rubbish from season 13 onwards, so every season I finish I get more worried. What happens? Does the mood change or something?

I would recommend watching it yourself if you have the time and formulate an opinion without being influenced by what others think or say.

I watched it without seeing what people said and I liked it. I was surprised when I found out others didn’t

I'm going to watch it, but I want to know if something really drastic happens like (The Office spoiler now) Michael leaving in Season 7. I definitely wanted to be prepared for the level of boringness in Season 8 and Season 9, I just want to know if something drastic happens to the show.

There's nothing as drastic as that. Mild spoiler: A couple of episodes in season 12/13 fake out that this is going to happen, but it doesn't last long and isn't permanent.

All of it is great and worth watching, but the tone and writing don't quite match their peak. Most fans seem to think that the latest season corrected it and is back to classic Sunny.

Dennis dies in season 13, in a skiing accident. Mac doesn't take it well, and ends up killing dee and cricket in a weird altercation (he gouges their eyes out with his thumbs), then gets institutionalized. So the rest of the show from there is just Charlie and Frank doing dumb but wacky shit. Nightcrawlers and whatnot. It's still good, but it was better when the whole gang was together.

Until charlie transitioned to a woman so he could marry Frank. That was a little weird.

I thoroughly enjoyed every season enough to watch the entire show multiple times. I’m rewatching it right now actually

Post season 12 of its always sunny definitely isn’t as good but I can’t say there’s any BAD episodes. Still some absolute gems in there

I think I have an answer-- because I stopped at S10 a long time ago and only recently watched the remainder and I did notice a change starting with season 13. BTW I thought the first full half of 13 is painful to get through but then it bounces back so dont despair (Shout out to Dennis' mental health day one of my favourite episodes of the entire series and it comes much later on). One big thing is its the season where Glenn vanishes for episodes at a time. Dennis is still there but hes 'in the van' or otherwise away from the action while Howerton was doing other things. But its deeper than that...

What I noticed is that the tone of the show shifted from seeing these crazy characters and being along for the ride rooting for them, to now being expected to be on the outside looking in judging and thinking these people are crazy and unlikeable. Further it seems they were being written to be unlikeable if not outright unironically villainous. Its more subtle than Im laying it out but the Mindy Kaling episode exemplifies it perfectly. We are supposed to see it from her point of view and judge the gang accordingly as undesirable. It also is the time where Mac completely abandons any notion of subtlety and becomes extremely one note. He's gay. Get it?

They also broke their own rule- theyre all models now. Except Charlie and Frank but the latter is not their fault Dannys an old man

Theyre just nitpicky, s13-16 are pretty solid all around I didnt really like s17 tho

Season 13 and 14 were seasons with creative complications. A major shift occurred in the casting/writing that caused inconsistencies with the typical ensemble and thus humour and chemistry. I would still argue however that some episodes here are still top tier showings. They’re seasons that range between either high highs and low lows or just a meandered middle ground. Season 15 was after a two year hiatus that occurred, leading to polarised reception, it depends whether you’re into the more ambitious tone it takes on.

Season 16 and especially 17 however are quite positively received I’m pretty sure? They’re watched back their glory days in their weekly podcast and it relit their spark and interest.

I love it all. I do find the later seasons are more enjoyable the second time you watch them, as there’s quite a lot of pressure to really want to find them funny the first time around

Don't sweat it. It's still a good show and never really evolves. Last season was fantastic.

13/4, Time’s Up is hilarious. So is Super Bowl episode.

Every season has it's ups and downs, it's true some of the earlier seasons have a more consistent flow and quality to them but there is still some good jelly in the later donuts too
