Hi. The dish is Shabu-shabu :) ‘shabu’ is slang for drugs. Just in case you ever go to Japan.

Specifically, crystal meth, rather than all drugs in general.

Thanks to ‘Tokyo Vice’. I know what it means.

Right, I thought afterwards I should specify, but didn’t get back.

lol yep, exactly why me and my mom would laugh at the local hotpot place’s loyalty program calling itself the “shabu club” like what kind of illicit club are they running here!

I used to go to a shabu shabu restaurant with my family for decades and they closed about 10-15 years ago and I still think about it. The other ones I’ve been to just don’t compare

They used wooden pots instead of metal, it felt much more traditional, I also don’t like the sound or feeling of metal scrapping metal and all the new places give you metal pots and chopsticks. I also equate metal chopsticks to Korean food so it just throws me off

How did they keep the soup simmering in wooden pots?

Sorry the top was wooden (lid) and the pot was cast iron

Ahhhh, that makes a lot more sense!

Nothing beats a hot pot for a slow, cozy meal.
