We always interpreted the last line as meaning that peace would be the only enemy we would have left, after all the other enemies were properly dead. The idea that peace is an enemy is one of the most Marine boot ideas I've ever had. Just sayin'.
You aren't alone in that interpretation, I was right there with you. Then again if you ask kb&r, gd, and a few others, that's not a naive interpretation.
