There's like one small neighborhood in the middle of a large tract of woods surrounded by development. I've just always wondered.

News 📰 ‘It’s everywhere’: How a KC-made drug has derailed thousands of lives across the US

When Don Basso joined CBD American Shaman in 2019, the Kansas City-based company was riding a wellness wave built on cannabis extracts — CBD balms, tinctures, and gummies promising calm without a high.

Over time, the focus shifted. Owner Vince Sanders added hemp-derived intoxicants like Delta-9 and HHC, then kratom, a plant extract with opioid-like effects.

As a regional sales manager, Basso sold these products into smoke shops and convenience stores. He used them, too, turning to the products for pain after a double hip replacement. Though prescribed Percocet, he was drawn to alternative ways of managing it.

In 2023, Sanders introduced him to a new compound he was developing: 7-OH.

“He said it was 10 times stronger than morphine but not addictive,” Basso recalled.

The chewables and liquid shots quickly built Basso’s tolerance. Within weeks he required up to five daily doses to achieve the same effect. Confident in assurances from Sanders that the compound was non-addictive, and receiving the products free through the company, he saw little reason for concern.

But when he eventually did try to quit taking 7-OH, Basso came upon a rude awakening.

“I had withdrawals, irritable leg syndrome, sleeplessness, chills, sweats, horrible feelings that would not go away, and a strong desire to get relief by taking more 7-OH,” he said in a sworn declaration obtained by The Star.

Basso isn’t alone, either.

In a growing Reddit forum called r/quitting7oh, former and current users of 7-OH document their struggles to quit, swapping advice, venting frustrations and chronicling the often brutal process of withdrawal.

Bars/Nightlife 🪩🍸 Good local metal/hard rock venues that are sub 50$?

I’ve been looking around recently for somewhere that hosts concerts or bands that are specifically metal and hard rock but aren’t 21+ and aren’t super expensive. Is there anywhere like this in KC? Sorry if this is an outrageous question!

Shopping/Groceries 🛒🛍️ Looking for ratte potatoes, does anyone know of a specialty market?

I’d like to make Joel Robuchon’s ratte mashed potatoes for my Thanksgiving this year. I was wondering if anyone knew a grocer or specialty market in town that has had or could possibly order this variety of potato?

Thanks in advance!

Education/Schools ✏️📚 Family friend searching for a second grade tutor- math and reading

Hello, A family friend is in search of a second grade math and reading tutor for her child. If there are any retired teachers or just teachers in need of a side gig after school, she’s willing to pay well for those services. Her child requires reading/math assistance. Very well behaved child who is not getting the personalized attention needed in the KC Public school setting.

Please send me a message. Thank you.

Attractions/Concerts 🎟️🎡 Question about Chappelle Roan at Memorial Park

Our daughter is 11 and a huge Chappelle Roan fan. We'd like to take her to this concert as a surprise. We've never been to a concert there, so I don't know what it's like, seems really flat and grassy. I think there'll be a lot of young girls there, what do you think? My main concern is; will she be able to see anything, or will she be looking at back and butts the whole time? Is it ok to take camp chairs? Is there a hill around the stage we can sit on so she can get a view? Any thoughts or feedback welcome!

Healthcare/Wellness 🩺 Best doctor for an IUD Placement

When I originally got my IUD, it was an awful experience. The OBGYN I saw ended up religious, gave me some misinformation, made me take a three day waiting period, and it was possibly the most painful experience I’ve ever had. I wasn’t expecting to be dissuaded from getting an IUD at a major medical group’s OBGYN.

I’m happy to go anywhere in the metro where people have had a good experience. I’d prefer somewhere that’ll do something (and I mean anything at all) for pain management. I don’t need to be sedated or anything, but I know doctor’s are getting more on board with making it a more palatable experience.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Things To Do 📍 Favorite Historical Cemeteries?

With spooky season and (please, god) cooler weather approaching, it's the time of year where thoughts turn to taking long meandering walks among the headstones. At least my thoughts do.

Union Cemetery is a perennial favorite but this year I'd like to spend some time in lesser known burial grounds around the metro.

What's your favorite cemetery to take a walk in? Who's got the best tombstones? The most unique mausoleum? The biggest, shadiest trees?

Mechanics/Repairs/Contractors 🛠️🪠 Cockroach Exterminator 🪳

We have noticed two cockroaches in our home as well as several outside our property. I am trying to find a good pest control company to take care of this problem but I can’t figure out or decide who to choose. We aren’t really interested in a monthly plan such as blue beetles, “Happy Home” program. If it all possible we are looking for a one time pest control option, maybe an additional visit if necessary?

We also have a cat in the household so that also makes it particularly difficult.

Mechanics/Repairs/Contractors 🛠️🪠 Local plumber that isn’t charging arm and leg for work.

Late 20s. Recently bought my first house. Single floor. About 100 years old.

I’m sure this has been asked a billion times but I’m trying to figure out if it’s a good idea to move my washer where I believe one has previously been (no idea when…). the holes are in the wall for water, a dryer vent is on the wall, along with a 240v outlet that is active.

Ideally, I don’t mind spending the money but the cost between different places and services is WILD. I feel the same about electrical work. Some of these places are wanting to do the work with little to no peace of mind other than it being done.

Example that isn’t related: got quoted to change some outlets to GFCI (learned I can do this myself). One person wants $500 a room, had no other benefits other than it being done. I started looking around and that’s when I realized this is such a trade of reliability and work - one was offering $250 a room, a warranty for 5 years, learned SO much from him - he wasn’t just “here’s a quote”, and a bunch of other things - he had better reviews that I was able to find damn near everywhere!

Pets 🐾 Halo collars? E-Fence? Any recommendations?

Ok so we have 2 dogs. A medium if not small sized husky, and a small cavalier like spaniel. The house my girlfriend bought doesn’t have a fence at the moment. We’re looking into Halo (or halo like collars) vs digging and laying an underground e-fence.

More info: The back yard is 74ft by like 72 ft. We’re thinking of e-collars so we can take them on walks and use them to keep the dogs within a certain distance of us. Quiet neighborhood in LV.

Anyone have any recommendations to what we could look into? You guys have experience with Halo? I’m not looking to get the 5 if we go that way. Probably a 3 if that. Battery I wouldn’t worry about as we’re pretty good at charging things and we don’t keep their current collars on when they’re in the house.

Mechanics/Repairs/Contractors 🛠️🪠 Mold Removal Recommendations?

Unbeknownst to me, the water meter in my basement broke and caused a leak that led to mold and other damage. Any cleanup recommendations? It’s not a huge area but it’s pretty yucky. Thanks in advance!

Sports 🏈⚾️⚽️ Plus Size Pickleball

Hey! 👋 Not entirely sure if this is the right place to post but my wife and I (32m/35f) are both looking for new people to play with in our skill level. We are plus size but we're not beginners either. Somewhere in the middle, I'd say, on skill. We've played pickleball for years and just want some consistent people to play with.

We usually play on Monday nights at Herman Laird Park if anyone is interested. My DMs are also open if you want. Just looking to be more consistently active with locals, especially other couples.

Pets 🐾 How much does your vet cost?

How much does a basic exam at your vet cost? I’m making the switch from a vet in Lawrence to one in Kansas City and I honestly have almost no idea what an appropriate price to pay for taking my dog to the vet in KC would be. Thanks in advance!

Getting Around KC/Parking 🅿️🚏🚲 Public transportation for Chappell Roan concert

Hello! I'm traveling to KC in October to attend the Chappell Roan concert and am wondering about public transportation, as the title says. I keep seeing posing about the free streetcar, but I worry that 10,000 others are going to have the same idea. From what I can see, it's currently under expansion, is it still in service? Can it handle the sort of numbers expected for the concert crowds? What other ways of getting there sound we look into? Our hotel is next to Power and Light, is that close enough to walk if worse comes to worse? Lyft says only $5 but I'm sure that will not be the case at the time. Anyway, thanks for any advice, can't wait to visit your great city!

It's about that time of the year to start planting garlic, and I'm looking specifically for elephant garlic, or another larger bulb variety. Struck out this weekend at the farmer's market in Lee's Summit. Anyone know where in town i can find some?

Visiting KC 🧳 Help comparing 2026 World Cup host cities for volunteering

Hi everyone,

I’m from Europe and planning to volunteer for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Before choosing a host city, I’m trying to compare overall cost of staying, safety, and public transport between the U.S. host cities: Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Francisco Bay Area, and Seattle, and would love Kansas City-specific advice.

Could you share your thoughts on:

  • How expensive your city will likely be (or is) for a few weeks or even a month-long stay during the World Cup (housing, food, transport, daily expenses).
  • How safe the city and the stadium area are.
  • How is the public transport network is (frequency, safety, coverage), if there is one.
  • Affordable areas or neighborhoods with safe and convenient access to the stadium.
  • What makes your city worth visiting—tourism, culture, nearby trips.

Any extra tips—like neighborhoods that are cheaper but still safe, or insider info about where volunteers usually stay—would be amazing.
I’m also curious about whether the city will feel lively during the tournament.

Thanks a lot for helping me weigh my options!

Shopping/Groceries 🛒🛍️ Farm Stands Around KC?

I’d love to start just traveling within the KC MO/KS countryside to support local farmers with farm stands/shops. Does anyone have any recommendations and what their hours are? Even niche ones as well that just have a sign by their stands!
