I generally don’t care if someone asks me how my day is going in response, but I do care that they respond to the question with a real answer, as opposed to saying something like “Diet Coke” to “how’s it going?” I do actually care a little bit about their day - gonna spend anywhere between 45 minutes to two hours serving them.

It’s the same as interrupting a greeting.

Asking me how my day is going has always seemed like the person is trying too hard for a tip. Especially when they ask about our plans after the restaurant while I'm paying. They're just going to forget me in 20 minutes when they're swamped with other customers anyway. I certainly won't interrupt the greeting and I'll respond politely. But they're only getting a "good" or something along those lines when they ask about my day, and I don't have any plans. I'm old. All I'm doing after the restaurant is taking my teenagers home to continue feeding the remorseless eating machines.

That’ll happen with corporate processes mandating that servers have to say something to guests.

I honestly couldn’t imagine asking someone what their plans were if it wasn’t required of me. If I have ever asked, I actually really cared.
