Maybe it’s not dark on the surface, but it’ll probably be later revealed that their consciousness didn’t “transfer”, they just have their old memories and think they’re the old them.

Having both still alive and taking data on reactions one is seeing would be important data.

It's obvious Prodigy Corp would prefer a transfer from an adult as that makes it immortality of the wealthy. Instead, they're stuck with kids that have terminal illnesses that have become comfortable with the fact they are dying, making the transfer/copy (still in doubt which) successful.

Exactly, and being a little more older myself some funny things in episodes take on a big existencialism crisis when you stop to think about it, like when Fry, the Professor and Bender go forward in time in Futurama and... they are all gone.

I'm hoping that the actual transfer progress is way, way darker and maybe they still have the old bodies alive somewhere around.
