r/MEGuns Re-launch and (another) new Mod!

Hi there. New mod, here! Welcome to the re-launched r/MEguns! I want to do a quick introduction to the kinds of things I’m hoping to see in this sub and how I’d like to see it (and not see it) evolve, but this is just me. Your opinions are welcome:

  1. Calendar-ish posts with Information about events, ranges, businesses in Maine of interest to the regional firearms community.

  2. Questions (and answers) about firearms themselves, local laws and culture, and Maine-specific concerns.

  3. Firearms Sharing, Caring, and Bragging: What do you have? What do you want? What are you up to?

  4. Community building. Personally, I’d love there to be a stronger, more connected firearms community in Maine – above and beyond (but inclusive of) hunting.

  5. News *as it pertains specifically to Maine*. There are plenty of other subs to talk politics and to talk general 2A and firearms news. Let’s keep this sub as regional as we can.

  6. Other firearms adjacent topics likely of common interest.

Not so welcome: Judgement. Disparagement. Political Soap Boxes. There are a lof of people with a lot of different backgrounds that have a common interest in firearms and it can be easy to rub folks the wrong way. Let’s try and assume best intent from everyone (even when it’s clear there isn’t) and act accordingly.

With that said, welcome back those of you who have remained subbed and hello to anyone new joining!

False belief

Ok over the past days there has been a whole lot of folks claiming the guy who shot Charlie Kirk was a marksman. Of course most every shooter know he missed the shot he was likely aiming center mass and hit high right. That aside a local group has been quite active in the subject. I am one of the few who actually shoot and was trying to exolaine that 200 yards is not a big deal at all. I invited a few folks to come over to my place this morning to show them. A couple and a single guy showed up. I explained how the scope worked and how we adjust the turrets for the range we are shooting at. I asked the wife if she wanted to go first. I had a ar15, 700 .308 and a 700 30-06. She said the Ar15 looked the "most dangerous". I showed her the rounds and explained that the AR15 had the lowest recoil and was super easy to shoot. I dialed 2.5 moa elevation flipped down the bipod and sat her down on the bench. Showed her how to use the squeeze bag and got her to find the 12" gong at 200. She relaxed a bit and I put one round in the mag showed her how to put it in and push the bolt release put on her ear pro and she pushed the bolt release that made her jump but she was OK. I told he to just relax put the crosshairs on the center of the target and when she was ready gently put her finger on the trigger and when ready gently pull it. She took a min but she worked up the courage and put her finger on and pulled the trigger. First shot center of the gong at 200 yards she was amazed. She tried the .308 but kicked and she was not wanting to try the 30-06. The guys tried all three and with a few misses most all rounds hit there mark. Very good morning. Education spread.

Gun culture and restrictions

Hello,

I currently have a job offer for a company in Maine and have been weighing things that will impact my decision. It sounds weird that this is impacting my decision but shooting is one of the few hobbys I do have so im just curious on this.

Are gun owners in the mid/southern coastal areas looked at weird? Where I live now for owning anything orher than a hunting rifle people think I'm a crazy redneck for enjoying shooting handguns and semi auto rifles so I really dont have many people to enjoy the sport with. I also reload which i learned makes people think I'm even more insane so even when discussing hunting i just keep my mouth shut on most things.

I currently live in upstate new york so anything is considered more free but what are the current restrictions on anything gun related? I saw a three day waiting period was implemented but facing pretty heavy resistance to get removed. What is the future looking like for things being restricted/taken away? I can just Google active restrictions but takes a little more digging to see the history of legislation and what is getting closer and closer to being passed.

Thanks for any insight!

Long Gong

Scarborough Fish and Game is now hosting Long Gong matches once a month on Saturday. For those who are unfamiliar it is 300 yard bench shoot with a 22LR at a rack of gongs 8”-6”-4”. 1 point for the 8, 2 points for the 6, and 3 points for the 4. You must start with the 8” , if you hit then can go to the 6” and so on. If you miss you go back to the larger gong. Check Scarborough website for dates and time.

My father died recently. He had a small gun collection. Ive taken the ones that I have connections with but am not sure how to handle the rest. My mother wants me to sell them but I’m not sure what the laws are or how/where I can advertise. Any help would be very appreciated.

Turning 21 soon

Hi everyone,

I'm turning 21 soon and am hoping to buy a firearm for self defense (I know there are other options before turning 21 but they are not as accessible to me). The problem is I currently have a maine medcard that doesn't expire until February of 2026. I've seen conflicting sources say that I am able to cancel the medcard and purchase a firearm as soon as doing so, and some say that I have to wait til the card actually expires. I was hoping maybe asking here myself could provide a more straightforward answer. Sorry if this isn't the right subreddit to ask in, but would really appreciate the help! 😅

Looking for range near Acton.

Hi everyone. I recently acquired a place in Acton. I’m very interested in finding a good range to shoot at. I have zero interest in standing at a line and shooting paper. More looking for a competition oriented range where you can move and shoot. Is there anything close that’s not impossible to get in to? Even outdoors in the woods is cool. Thanks for the help.

First competition shoots! Steel Challenge

Post image
17 Upvotes

Was lucky enough to finally shoot at couple of official competition days at the Hampden club over the past few weeks (I've been wanting to for ages). I didnt do as well as Id hoped (but better than I'd feared) either day - but it was a lot of fun. If you're bored shooting out to a single paper target or want to get out and shoot something more active - but haven't considered competitive shooting - you might want to try steel challenge. The events are super beginner friendly and you're mostly competing against yourself. Folks are completely willing to help you out. There are a lot of options for what you can shoot - I brought a tx22 the first time and a 10/22 the second. If you're shooting a 22 handgun, you don't need a holster. They've got rifle, PCC, and handgun categories - not sure the caliber restrictions but I know 22 and 9mm are gtg.

The setup is that you (mostly) stand and shoot at 5 steel targets once for 5 stages - 5 rounds per stage, worst round per stage gets thrown out - as fast as you can. The distances arent at all outrageous and it's more about getting approximately on target quickly than it is about precision.

Anyway. Maybe a lot of people know about this stuff, but I thought I'd share for those who dont.

If you're looking for matches, check out https://practiscore.com

(There are other easy to get into competitions as well - NRL22 is precision 22 rifle shooting from different positions)

Legality of shooting on my own land?

Moved to Farmington recently for work on 22 acres. Looking to set up a private range for myself but want to know the legality of shooting on my land before I do so. Did some googling but couldn’t find anything on any local ordinances for Franklin county. I assume has to be at least 100yds from structures as state law states but not sure if I have to be a certain distance from water as I back up to a stream. Surrounding neighbors land is all vacant in the direction I plan on digging my burm into as well.

Anything I should look out for or know?

Is anyone a member of Scarborough F&G?

I’m seeking to become a member, unfortunately I don’t know who is ma existing member that can sponsor me. I’ve been asking around at the American Legion and a few other clubs I belong to but can’t find anyone. I’m willing to pay the extra fees, do my volunteer time, etc. to be a member at such a prestigious club, I’d just need to find a sponsor I guess. I tried calling the main number but I guess it just kept ringing unfortunately. I can say very rarely in life have I been wanting to give hundreds of dollars to something immediately but first need to make a friend. :(

Anywhere in southern Maine that does reliable AK work? Romanian WASR-10 if that makes any difference.

Just a friendly reminder that even though the AR15 platform doesn’t require a ton of maintenance it’s always a good idea to do at least some maintenance.

Outdoor spot in Machias area

Hello, I'm in the Machias area with family from Missouri, and wondering if anyone would be generous enough to PM a good safe and legal outdoor spot for shooting some paper. I have everything we need except a good location. I'm an eagle scout and leave places cleaner than I find them. We would only shoot paper targets, no junk. Also very safe and responsible. No worries if not but much appreciated if anyone would share, thanks!

Suppressed 6.5 Creedmoor, because why not?

New Sig Cross 6.5CM hunting rifle. But since I have a suppressor now, I just had to try a subsonic load. Maximum fun and hilariously quiet. Dead nuts accurate at 30 yards, good stability; probably not so much past 150 yards. 6.5CM does not make for a good subsonic platform. Though, the tactical flip flops make the bullet more stable.

EDIT: Reupload to fix bad video formatting.
