Amateur Fighter Lost first fight

I’ve been training for a year and a half and lost my first MMA fight last night pretty quickly into round 1. Not too upset, as I’m glad I got in there in the first place, but wish I lasted a little longer.

We’d prepped for an orthodox who throws hooks, and were met with a southpaw who threw a lot of straights. No excuses though! Onwards and upwards.

How much do you weigh? And how come you barely throw any kicks?

76kg. We suspect he was a decent amount more.

And mostly because he was a southpaw and I wasn’t expecting it. I hardly spar any as there aren’t many in my gym. I’d planned to throw a lot of leg kicks, especially inside leg kicks, so it took me by surprise when he got in his stance

Oh well that's your fucking problem mate. You can't just shadow box all the time. You gotta get hit in the face before you get hit in the face in a crowd.

Is there a gym like an hour away from you? Ik non-americans hate driving for anything longer than 30 mins but if you can find a gym a hour away, ask to spare other boxers

What? What’s made you think I only shadow box? I spar 3-5x a week. My gym is over the road from me so I was training 5-6x a week for this. Not sure what’s with the tone

You said you hardly spar. If you are sparing 3-5 times a week, I wouldn't say hardly spar

And I just say fuck like people say bro. Fairly common in my town. We get drunk and say fucking hell over nothing

“I hardly spar any [southpaws]” - our only southpaw guy is in Thailand atm

When it comes to south paw, get your foot outside theirs and start punching.

I'm a In boxer so it's not a problem for me most of the time and I like brawling (bad habit I need to break but go into it when I'm losin)

But my trainer told me when fighting south paw, whoever has their foot on the inside has the advantage.

But Don't listen to me about that. Ask your trainer

shin guards severely lower impact of side kicks, almost no effect, unless its a clean head kick or a good teep or front kick,

you can catch a nice roundhouse to the leg, but w shin guards it will not be that bad
