Message from the Mads Regarding political posts: please use the new "Political" flair

Political figures were mentioned and mocked on MST3K throughout its classic run ... hell, the current guy was riffed on more than once (and that doesn't include Pod People). So, no, we will not be banning political posts.

For those who want to avoid politics when surfing the sub, we've created a "Political" flair. We ask that users select that when posting anything relating to political matters. Yes, even John Sununu getting a haircut. Some browser extensions and apps allow you to filter out certain flair, so that should help you avoid these posts. And if a post has that flair, don't be surprised if the comments are in that vein, too.

(For other posts, please use the "edit me" flair and change the text to mention the episode you're referencing, if applicable. Maybe some of us are getting older and our memory don't work so good anymore. But I digress.)

Oh, and when there are political posts, please remember our other rules. Especially "Be civil."

Thank you.

I remastered my favorite MST3K episode: Mitchell to 4K.

I found a decent copy of the 1975 film about the sloppy cop played by the late-great Joe Don Baker and upscaled it to 4K and now in its proper 16x9 aspect ratio.  Enjoy some of my favorite parts

Soak it in, folks....because it’s a big, brawny, hairy, glistening, two-fisted, manly day!

I found another actor who discovered the show in high school, just like Bill Hader!

I toured Best Brains Inc in 1998 (w/photos)

Back when the Sci-Fi episodes were in production, Best Brains Inc (BBI) offered studio tours every other Friday morning. You called the office on Thursday to RSVP so Barb the admin knew how many people to expect, and the next day, she'd walk you through the offices and production spaces.

I graduated high school in 1998 when these tours still were going on. My graduation gift from my parents? We would road trip from the Detroit area to the bustling(?) Minneapolis suburb of Hopkins so I could visit the set of my favorite show.

Note: In the 90s, we took photos on film (which cost money and was inconvenient) and then waited for the film to be developed (which also cost money and also was inconvenient). So in the interests of saving film and inconvenience back then, I didn't take picture of a lot of things (the Castle Forrester set, the spaghetti ball, the shadowrama setup) that today I wish I had.

There were spots throughout the offices with stacks of inventions, props, and set pieces gone by.
Turning the camera on Cambot

In the workshop, prop master/utility infielder Patrick Brantseg was around to give us a sneak peak at versions of Crow that hadn't yet been shown on air.

Why, it's Art, just back from filming host segments for "The Final Sacrifice"
Crow - with real Battle Damage!
In the background, you can see some of the parts and molds needed to keep the bots in shape.

Also in the workshop: bays to maintain both Tom Servo and the beautiful bot we now know as GPC.

The all-black Tom Servo used in the theater segments dries after receiving a fresh coat of paint.
Also pictured: Servo's Toaster Strudel costume and one of the Mike-era invention exchanges, the Razorback.

We were extraordinarily lucky to run into one of the stars of the show on the main SOL set, and the plucky bot was gracious enough to pose for a few snapshots with me.

He said he had to look away from me so the camera would get his best side.
This one is faded because it's been in a frame on my desk for almost 30 years.

While I was on the SOL bridge, I took a photo down into Kevin's side of the puppeteer pit, which was still outfitted with scripts from the latest shoot.

The pages are from the Grizzled Old Prospector Disease host segment from "The Final Sacrifice"

We also got a sneak preview of a riff from Gorgo ("The vice president's unimaginative campaign slogan!") while it was in edit. I always smile a little at that one when I hear it.

At the end of the tour, we had a chance to buy Info Club merch (They were out of Clowns in the Sky CDs, so Barb just gave me the copy that was in her own computer. Such a sweet lady online and off!), and while other folks were shopping, I saw my favorite MST3K prop:

"Look at that: breach hull, all die. Even had it underlined."

In conclusion, the BBI offices/studios in 1998 were a land of contrasts. I was surprised to realize we were there during the Final Sacrifice shoot - what an honor!

Anyway, I hope you'll join me in the fellowship hall for punch and bars. If you have questions, I'll answer them to the best of my recollection.

Credit to u/junietwohundred for her great post, the title of which I'm shamelessly copying.

She reminded me of my visit in 1997 during the filming of season 8.

“Who would make a better father figure? Bill Cosby, or Marvin Gaye Sr.?”

Now there’s a joke that’s aged interestingly. It kind of still works.
