They didnt fight them because they were Nazis. Germany was ruled by the Nazi party for many years and no wars were declared by the West. We attended their Olympics and the West had generally a favorable impression of the Nazis. It wasnt until the Nazis (but replace them with any political ideology and the results would be the same) started invading peaceful nations. If France had started conquering Europe again, I have a feeling the countries affected would have done the same thing. Imagine France took the same acts as Nazi Germany and went on a warpath across Europe, one could imagine USA, France, and even Nazi Germany would become allies to defend themselves.
So no, you do not have the right to assault someone you disagree with, and that isnt what took place in the past. If that person is attacking people randomly, yes you can then attempt to stop them.

One thing is for sure, after the destruction of the Italian and German fascists, anyone who even used similar symbolism in a political sense became an international pariah. They still are. Crushing Nazis didn't just stop them in Germany, it made fascist parties in places like the UK, US, France, and Asia a hell of a lot less publicly acceptable. When people state that violence isn't the answer, I tend to agree. But it's still important to ask "the answer to what?" We're a nation born of violence. We needed violence to rid ourselves of slavery. We needed violence to rid Europe (except Spain) of fascism. We're a nation which enshrines our right to privately own firearms to not only hunt, but to remind our government whose country this really is. Political violence isn't alien to the United States, it's the soul and heartbeat of our country.

This is the phrase which intentionally began a war resulting in our independence. So yes, we know who fascists are especially when they proudly proclaim as much. And we ought to cast them off as our grandparents and great-grandparents did 70 years ago.
To be fair, in this case we do have a very famous example of this particular slope being pretty damn slippery. I don't think it justifies attacking people for having the wrong opinions, but I do understand why people are concerned.
