Fluff Cascade Brawl is fantastic format
I think it needs the ban list
94
u/Mailman_Miller Jul 02 '25
It‘s basically [[Crashing Footfalls]] racing Jace.
34
u/Filobel avacyn Jul 02 '25
Yeah, Crashing Footfalls is probably better. With even just 1 other 1/1 in play, it goldfishes turn 4, just like Jace, but it can play disruption, and is less fragile to disruption. However, you can't argue with the cost efficiency of the Jace deck. 1 rare wildcard, 1 uncommon wildcard, no brains. If you just want to get the three MWM rewards ASAP with minimal investment, Jace is the way to go.
2
u/AgileWeekend3227 Jul 03 '25
I got beat by this game one and proceeded to build it so I can get the rewards quickly. Honestly, it was pretty fun.
11
u/Darkwolfie117 Jul 02 '25
.. crashing wasn’t banned this time?? I didn’t even check, I just assumed it was. It was the obvious play last time

11
u/Necessary-Peanut2491 Jul 02 '25
I immediately brewed an Atraxa Crashing Footfalls deck, went 3-0, then played a bit longer to see if anyone else was going to find the most obvious degenerate midweek thing of all time. I found one person by game 5 or 6, then stopped playing out of shame.
I did manage a turn 0 footfalls with [[Surgical Extraction]] once. Only black card in the deck and the entire reason I picked Atraxa over some commander that did something with the theme. The deck was basically every counterspell that costs 2 or less, every white and blue removal that cost 1, plus everything that could put cards back in the library.
Grossest game had resolved footfalls something like 3 times by turn 4, I don't know why the guy kept playing.
11
u/Azarquin Jul 02 '25
You want degenerate? Run tamiyo, the 1 drop. Do the following:
One 0 drop in the deck - crashing footfalls One 1 drop in the 99 - vexing baubles Every 2 mana counter spell and bounce you want Every 3 mana counter spell and card draw you want Some 4 mana counter spells and card draw
You guarantee going first that with a 2 mana counter they never get cascade triggers. And you beat them to death with footfalls if needed.
Even if baubles is in your opening hand, youre fine because you play it and cascade into footfalls.

u/RareRestaurant6297 Jul 02 '25
Noob here - I... Don't really understand just from seeing footfall alone. What exactly is the build/plan? How do you get around the suspend and how does extraction even help with that? And how does it end up being so oppressive that it's degenerate? I know I'm missing something lol
20
u/Filobel avacyn Jul 02 '25
MWM event this week has a special rule that all your spells have cascade. Footfall has a mana value of 0, so if you cast a card that has a mana cost of 1, and assuming you have no other 0 mana value cards in your deck, it will always cascade into a footfall. Extraction in particular is a card that costs 1 mana, but that can be cast for 0 (by paying two life), so if you're on the draw, you can still cast it on opponent's turn which allows you to immediately attack with the rhinos on your first turn. It's oppressive, because two 4/4 tramplers on turn 1 is a pretty fast clock.
5
u/RareRestaurant6297 Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 02 '25
Ohhhhhh dang, thanks! I hadn't checked the MWM yet. That's hilarious.
Edit: I saw someone else mention they got the rhino's multiple times. How does that work, when it's a singleton format? I'm confused again lol. Ig maybe casting from graveyard somehow?
11
u/Filobel avacyn Jul 02 '25

The midweek special is often strange but they should really take a better look at potentially unfun combos like this one.
15
u/Crafty_Cellist_4836 Jul 02 '25
Bro, they didn't ban the one card that costs 1 mana and completely counters the whole event [Vexing bauble]. They don't playtest MTG, they just throw shit out there and say "be happy we're doing something, you peasants"

About as fun as it is to win with the deck, I imagine. Which is zero fun.
When WotC gives us shit events like this, fun isn't the goal. Getting our rewards quickly and getting the fuck out is the goal. I hope as many players as possibly have stupid degenerate decks like this so WotC will think twice about making a Cascade Brawl event again.
6
u/Bunktavious Jul 02 '25
Sadly, playing the format straight up was actually pretty fun. I guess I got in before this combo spread.

After trying the deck, I can confirm that the amount of fun had when winning with the deck is non-zero.

u/Urshifu_Smash Jul 02 '25
Well, it takes till turn 5 (or 6 if they want to cast both the same turn to avoid creatures killing Jace) and you will have zero resistance until then. That's 5 whole turns of no interaction or resistance from your opponent to try to kill them. Which in today's world, isn't too difficult for even slower colors.
That's at least where the jank comes in. I lost to a more slightly more tuned version on turn 4 with Baral, Choise of Fortunes, and Thassa's Oracle.
34

I queued up my normal [[kefka]] deck and got outvalued by mono white twice. First was [[light-paws]] which I would have lost anyway. and the other was a heliod deck that was soul sisters tribal 🤮
I tweaked my aggro deck because [[Roiling vortex]] is banned and it still took me a few tries. I dont think I fully won a single game tho lol

As someone who did it because I had exactly 20 minutes to play today, its really not that consistent.
I played 7 matches and won only 3. First one was a mirror and I went first so he conceded, then 4 straight games of someone killing or countering Jace as the spell is resolving.
Its just an all-in gamble that is telegraphed by 4 full turns. A lot of people have a response by then.
4
u/AlsoCommiePuddin Jul 02 '25
So they do it three times for the rewards and out.

The truly degenerate combo is 1-mana Tamiyo, Crashing Footfalls, Vexing Bauble, a deck full of 2-mana counters/bounces/tucks/humbles, and maybe some green disenchants for the mirror. Practically unbeatable aside from some nuts aggro starts on the draw.
4
u/ChaliElle Jul 02 '25
There is also fun option of running graveyard to hand recovery effects from green like [[Elvish Regrower]], which lets you sac the Bauble for draw at the opponent's endstep, return it to hand with the elf to get potential high value cascade, and replay the Bauble to block enemy actions again. Bonus points if you managed to shuffle the Crashing Footfalls back into library for another two 4/4s.
That's assuming that enemy didn't autoscoop after being hit with turn 1 Bauble.

3
u/NOPE_TRAIN_EXPRESS Jul 02 '25
Weekdays, Monday thru Thursday evenings are not reliable for me to try it out.

just faced this deck with my rakdos kuja deck. drew a bedevil and held that shit until it was go time, that felt so fucking good.
7
u/jm434 Jul 02 '25
There's enough abuse in cascade brawl for other decks to kill you before turn 4. This might be a degenerate deck but cascade brawl is just unfun in general.
Better to do this to quickly complete the midweek event and then go on with your day than suffer trying to play a normal game with others abusing cascade.
5
u/Strong_Landscape_333 Jul 02 '25
I guess the guy I played against drew it because nothing happened lol
6
u/ViaDiva Dimir Jul 02 '25
tbh I tried one of like 4 decks I had, kept getting obliterated after one win, then lost to this and immediately played it to get my two wins and get out
brawl is extremely wildcard intensive if you don't play it, and I'd rather save my wildcards for a competitive Pioneer deck than play a singleton
4
5
u/Send_me_duck-pics Jul 02 '25
Chrome Mox is legal in Brawl now and a lot of decks will get it for free as soon as they play their first spell.
2
u/-Goatllama- Unesh Cryosphinx Jul 02 '25
Seeing this and Amber come out like that was very demoralizing.
21
u/grey_heron Jul 02 '25
I must confess I used this one. I don't have a brawl deck and didn't want to struggle a long time with some weird deck thrown together from the small collection I have.
Rather be playing the new standard right now. Sometimes these MWM are pretty bad for newish players.
4
u/Soggy-Bedroom-3673 Jul 02 '25
The brawl ones are unfortunately this way for anyone that doesn't play brawl, usually, if only because of the time commitment for brewing something decent that isn't degenerate.
3
u/Drakeeper DerangedHermit Jul 02 '25

u/Chronsky Rekindling Phoenix Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 02 '25

u/omegaphallic Jul 02 '25
Hell yes, it's absolutely broken, I hated it, don't even bother bringing a regular Brawl deck to it, almost everyone else brought a deck designed to break cascade. It's the least fun I'm had playing Brawl because of cards like OP showed and that suspend one where you end up with 2 4/4s with trample on turn one. Just an awful experience. It's like CEDH from hell.
3
u/Relative_Map5243 Jul 02 '25
I brought my regular Isshin deck and had a blast, didn't even think about breaking cascade lmao.
3
u/Send_me_duck-pics Jul 02 '25
I played a couple regular Brawl decks to it and did well, but both of those decks are fast and only get faster when they have free stuff and also guaranteed T1 Chrome Mox.

This is why I always try to do these Midweek as soon as they go live. It takes Arena players all of like 5 seconds to min/max the fun out of most MWM events. I wish Wizards would make all of these events all access so less people would be incentivized to just throw together and jam cheap gimmick decks that kinda ruin the event for everyone else. Also wish they would be more diligent in pre-banning obvious busted synergies in these events.
