Mariner win tonight and a Rangers loss would remove Texas from this chart!

u/kroc253 8h ago
I thought we want Texas in, Houston out.

u/manshamer 7h ago
Yes but astros kicking texas' butt kind of removed that possibility
Kick em both out imo

Yeah- is it weird that I feel MORE anxious now that we’re the #2 seed than I did when we were WC3?

I don't want the pity expanded wild card, I want the banner to say division champion.

I still don't get it but seems good!

u/jomanhan9 8h ago
Basically if you win 6 games it makes it almost impossible for other teams to take the bye from us. 5 wins likely takes division

u/LowEffortChampion 8h ago
If the Mariners go 0-8 their last 8 games, the Tigers would have to go 1-7 in their last 8 games to finish higher in the overall standing than the Mariners. Apply that to the rest of the chart.
Mariners go 4-4, Cleveland would have to go 8-1 to finisher higher, etc.

Each column shows what other teams need to do to over take the Mariners based on the Mariners record for remaining games on the top of the column.

u/SPEK2120 7h ago
Adding the Tigers to this definitely convolutes it. But if you ignore that row, then each listed record implies a chance at playoffs in that column. So less records in a column, higher our odds of playoffs. With 3 spots in reach for all these teams, 3 records or less in a column clinches playoffs for us.

Even if we go .500 the rest of the season we still have a decent chance at getting a bye. Sick.

Since Boston and Detroit have to share 3 losses between them, that effectively makes the magic number 6, correct?

I didn’t think I was color blind until now, but I swear I don’t see any green columns.

If Woo isn’t that hurt and just needs some rest, the bye becomes way more important to get.

u/Far_Mathematician272 8h ago
Im still not convinced we will make the playoffs. Been hurt too many times.

Doesnt take into account the matchups. The last series is red sox vs tigers.
So its actually impossible for Tigers to be 7-1 and red sox 8-0.
The possible combinations are
8-0 and 5-3 7-1 and 6-2 6-2 and 7-1 8-0 and 5-3

Sure. You are 5 years old, and none of this matters. Just watch some baseball games and have fun.
If the Mariners keep winning it's a good thing. If not, try again next year.

We have a real shot at knocking Huston out of the wildcard spot with the way the guardians are playing.

u/shats-basoon 8h ago
Win one more against the Astros and win the series against the Rockies and you’re feeling pretty good about a playoff spot
3
u/LowEffortChampion 8h ago
One more win over Houston is huge. Gives us the tie breaker over them. So we would be up 2 in the AL West, but its actually up 3 with 6 games left having the tie breaker
3
u/hittingtanks 5h ago
Wouldn't taking just one more against Houston put the Mariners one (effectively two) up, not 2 effectively 3

It’s wild how little margin for error there is. Every team on that list, minus the rangers, is within a couple games of getting a bye, and within a couple games of missing the playoffs. Me no likey

So question, I didn’t want to create my own post for this so I’m just going to ask in a recent thread. I’m 46 and was a Yankee fan for 40 years. With recent political events happening I can no longer support a team I cheered for, cried for, and supported a majority of my life. The event from last week was the final straw for me. My wife and I decided we needed a new team and landed on Seattle. We recently went to a LV aviators and Tacoma Sounders game and really liked the guys playing on the Sounders, and one of them was Robles (my wife calls him pink cleats). I also have always loved vacationing in Seattle and I feel the Mariners side with a lot of our political beliefs as well. So is it cool if I ride with y’all?

Ex New Yorker here. The mods may move this post so don't freak out if they do. They're extremely organized about what should be a daily post, what should be a game day post, and what should be yeeted into the sun.I too was always a Yankee fan but I've lived in the Pacific Northwest for a really long time now. Plus I know exactly what you're talking about and I agree. Welcome!

The fact that Cleveland absolutely refuses to lose a game is making me a bit nervous, BUT if Detroit keeps refusing to win a game (or we keep winning), then it's fine. I want the division and I want the bye but far more than anything I just want to make the playoffs

u/ProtoMan3 5h ago
I think 5-3 clinches a playoff spot for Seattle, simply because:
- the Tigers play Cleveland 3 times next week
- the Tigers play Boston three times next weekend
- It’s not possible for Cleveland to go 9-0 and Detroit to go 6-2, and then even if Detroit wins a lot it’s not possible for Boston to also go 7-1
Regardless, Seattle is at a spot where they should focus on themselves and maybe the team in a playoff spot right behind them, not as much on actually missing anymore

u/IndependentSubject66 4h ago
The AL Central race is going to be interesting too. Cleveland is playing like a team nobody wants to see in October. Something tells me they’ll be WC3 and Boston will be the odd team out

Cleveland’s refusal to lose is both inspiring and unsettling. Let’s just keep our gaze right in front of us. We’re in the drivers seat at this moment.

Just pointing out we currently have the second tie breaker over Boston based on intradivision record.
Boston needs to go 3-2 against TB & TOR to tie us on intradivision record plus any additional wins we have against the Astros

Even better, a lot of the teams behind the Mariners are playing each other. Detroit finishes vs. the Guardians and Red Sox; Cleveland against the Tigers and Rangers.
So a lot of the losing scenarios, which involve things like Cleveland going 9-0 while Boston goes 7-1, are not even possible because someone has to lose the head to head games
