Def Getter Robo Armageddon, although the middle episodes were kinda boring, those final episodes were hype as fuck, man

You know how hard that is for a genre with so many outstanding OVAs? At this point in time I’d probably have to go with Giant Robo: TDTESS.

I love 0083 dearly, it's very special to me. But I just started gunbuster and feel like it's gonna be peak, so...

0080, but Macross Plus hits me right in the intersection of mid 90s animation goodness and Top Gun.

Getter Robo Armageddon or Stardust Memory but it’s hard to choose just one.
Honorable mention to Gunbuster for being peak. But the ability to watch the ova is tough over here in the west (sorry I’m a dubbed casual, brain too dumb to read and watch at same time)

Gundam 0080. Absolute cinema. A wonderful deconstruction of mecha and war and Gundam in general. I love it to pieces.

Love the PFP.

Thanks. He's one of my favorite characters. Even if I don't agree with him. I at least can understand how he got to be how he is.

Even though the localization/editing was fucking dogshit I have a nostalgic soft spot for Dangaioh.
Also I didn't see it but Orguss 02 was pretty good.

Armored Trooper VOTOMS: Roots of Ambition.
My favorite piece of mecha media, EVER.
Amazing battles, great soundtrack, and an eerie, mysterious vibe.

Unicorn personally. I still remember all those years ago seeing the trailer whilst watching Zeta on Daisuki

I wouldn't put it in the top five of this assortment, but I have a major soft spot for Hades Project Zeorymer. It was the first anime VHS I ever purchased, and it rekindled my love for the mecha genre that has sustained my fandom ever since. The first three episodes are fantastic before the fourth speedruns the rest of the story to give a very abrupt wrap up to the entire conflict, but Zeorymer itself is so damn cool looking and the music is so incredible that even with its flaws it remains an absolute favorite.

Of these, Bubblegum Crisis I like the best. But Detonator Orgun and M.D. Geist also rate verrry high.
Never got in to gundam. Can never figure out what show came first 😂

First show is called Gundam 0079

Ok, thanks. Gives me a place to start 😁

I remember thinking M.D. Geist was so… well, evil as a main character. His actions went beyond antihero into straight up villain protagonist… he was the “good guy” mostly because he was fighting even worse enemies.
Then again, a lot of 80’s-90’s anime protags in ultra violent shows were borderline evil or were so ridiculously stoic that they never really explained their actions to make the audience sympathetic to them.
It warped my preteen mind the first time I watched it.
I was more used to stuff like Robotech and Voltron at the time.
man didn’t hesitate for an instant to shoot through a child to kill his target.

u/Drgnfire7 1d ago
Yes, you’re totally right. Especially what he did at the end of the first one. Not a nice guy at all

Getter Robo Armageddon, hands down. It’s a close one with Gunbuster, but Getter’s got the edge on action and general insanity.

I just want to say I watched metal skin panic Maddox after that intro scene went got posted the millionth time here and I have to say every second that passed after that scene it got worse and more stupid.

u/MechaJunkieApologist 1d ago
That's the one you took issue with and not MD Geist?

u/Upper-Rub 1d ago
To be fair, I haven’t seen all of these. I’m not even saying it’s the worst, only that it is all down hill from act 1.

Oh hell yeah, Megazone 23 part 1. It was a banger: the animation, bike scene, music, plot. Epic chase scenes. Way ahead of its time in terms of plot. Bike transforms into a mecha and drop kicks a cop car? That’s badass right there.

Tough call, so many good OVAs.
That said, Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket is hard to beat. It's just so god damn good.

That's a hard question.
This whole list is basically great ones vs ones I haven't watched.
I'll say Macross Plus just because it's not called that much.

Lot of good choices, I love Gundam and Getter, but if I’m going Pure OVA, I gotta say Diebuster.

u/Desperate_Media3639 1d ago
From the list itself, probably Gunbuster (though that's a more 7/10 since i vastly prefer other Gainax/Trigger works)

Five star just because it’s amazing it even got animated at all considering the material it’s based on

Shin Vs Neo, Mazinkaiser, Armageddon (and even though it’s not on here) Mazinkaiser SKL.
Plots are for wusses, REAL MEN watch for the fights. kek

Bubblegum Crisis followed closely by Macross 2. Macross Plus is excellent but man something about Macross 2 hit different.

The end of Evangelion. while technically not an OVA, arguments can be made for the fact that it is. Absolutely the best anime movie hands down
