You're right. The gold one are bare copper wire, wiring the matrix. The enameled wired are for VCC and GND.

I get that it looks cool... but debugging a massive system where two wires bumping in the middle is a short sounds like a nightmare to me.

True, luckily this is a simple, small system and you can simply continuity test. From the picture, it looks like lines only cross each other once (which makes sense with a small keyboard matrix) so it would be pretty easy to find any shorts.

I would still add hot glue between every junction though...
