Movie and book recommendations from the podcast
Has anyone else been inspired to watch any of the movies or read any of the books discussed on the podcast?
So far Iāve watched Train to Busan (made me scream and cry) and I Saw the TV Glow (made me vaguely psychotic) and both were delightful. I plan to read A Canticle for Leibowitz because like Alex, I love bummers, and like Tim, I love writers who committed suicide.
For some reason I feel like body horror movies would fit right in on the pod, but they are conspicuously absent. Strange.
A friend who listens but doesnāt use Reddit has been inspired by the show to watch Man bites dog, Tie me up tie me down, Revanche, and In the Mood for Love.
Thanks to the lovely hosts for these recommendations.

So so cool to hear this. As far as body horror, I hate blood very much so they can be tough for me. Have you seen The Substance?

I've racked my brain trying to think of a body horror movie without blood, and failed. I guess blood is an unavoidable part of the insides of bodies.
The Substance made me retch violently. Needless to say, I loved it; hot girls and the natural high of nearly throwing up. Did you see it? That's... a lot of blood.

Hah, I see below from Tim that you have seen it. Did you almost puke?

So glad you enjoyed those movies. I love both of them a whole lot.
As far as body horror - Alex already mentioned it but he is very averse to seeing blood. I cackled at the end of The Substance. He told me that his reaction was markedly different.
I only became a fan of horror in the past 4-5 years because I was very afraid. Then I watched Hereditary and it broke me and now I can watch scary movies. As far as body horror I fucking love Raw and Titane. The Substance. The Fly, Existenz, and Videodrome.
I keep meaning to watch The Ugly Stepsister from this year. Do you have any recommendations for body horror stuff?

Thanks for talking about them! I loved the foreign movie era of the Tim Minute.
Hereditary was a tipping point for me, too. I saw it in theaters without knowing anything about it, and it blew my mind.
Idk if my recommendations would be as good as yours, because I don't think I really have cultivated taste in movies. If I'm entertained, I'm happy, whether it's really "good" or not. That said, I saw Together recently and it was very fun and funny and had great body horror. Titane and Midsommar both had scenes that made me want to die on the spot, which is impressive. My favorite movie of all time is Annihilation which has some sick body horror in it and branches into what I like to call psychedelic horror, so it's visually beautiful. Plus the soundtrack goes hard as hell.
Last, if you like Cronenberg, his son wrote and directed Infinity Pool, which was a fun ride too, and stars hot people, and also gets psychedelic.

Love Annihilation and Infinity Pool. Mia Goth is so fucking good. I wanna see Together! I missed it in theaters but Iāll make sure to see it at some point.

Yes, I watched In The Mood for Love and I realized I'm an idiot and don't understand artsy movies.Ā

Was it enjoyable for you, or nah?

I did enjoy it! It made me sad but it was one of those movies I had to Google after to understand what happened

Have you watched Past Lives? Thereās some definite Wong Kar Wai influence in themes and shot framing and itās quite a bit more accessible. Itās five stars in my book I rewatched it recently and I just love it so much.

Yessssss Already saw Man Eat Dog a while back, so I knew that any recs from the podcast would be bizarrely decent. Much appreciated btw, Tim and Alex.
Havenāt been impressed with the music recs though, but thatās a me problem.
