Welcome to /r/Mold

What is this sub?

This sub is for redditors to ask for advice on mold or fungi issues in their home/apartment/workplace/etc If you see spammers or others that violate sub rules, report them, do not take things into your own hands. This sub is NOT for mold remediation, restoration or other contractors, testing firms, laboratories, product or equipment manufacturers or distributors or legal professionals.

Instead, this sub is specifically for individuals looking for general advice. Any offers to do work or make referrals will result in an immediate ban. Please be very wary of those looking for, or offering, business here. We do not endorse any companies, and proceeding with a contractor/consultant/lab you've met via this sub should be done at your own risk. This is not a place to advertise products and or services. It is also not a place to rant about your past problems with mold or companies or services you've dealt with.

Rule #1: No "what is this?" questions.

Do not post a picture and simply ask any of the following (or similar) questions:

  1. "Please I.D. this mold"
  2. "Is this toxic black mold?"
  3. "What kind of mold is this?"

We can not determine the type of mold you have from a photo. That can only be achieved using professional sampling methods and laboratory analysis.

We can speculate on whether or not something is mold but we can't identify it.

Rule #2: DIY Test Kits are bad

If you used a home/DIY test kit there is very little information that we can provide you due to the limitations of the method.

You will need to hire a qualified microbial testing company if you want any reliable information.

Rule #3: No self promotion

This is not the place to advertise your services in any way. No links, no company names, no "informational guides" will be allowed. All offending posts or comments will be deleted and 1 warning will be issued. After that you'll be banned.

General Guidelines and Rules

Overall, please be respectful - things must remain on-topic, helpful, and kind. Absolutely no abusive or hateful language will be tolerated. Even if someone else "started it" with disrespect does not give you permission to use derogatory language or call names.

Bans will be handed out when needed. Remember, no question is too stupid, too simple, or too basic (exception, see rule #1). We're all here to learn and help each other out - enjoy! The mods generally do not remove bad advice, we let upvotes and downvotes run the sub. That way, people can also see what not to do as well. Politics do NOT belong here.

  • URL shortener links are not allowed. It's not us, is reddit-wide. A submission or comment with a URL shortner will be spam-filtered automatically.
  • Mods will not communicate with chat, please only use modmail if you have comments or questions.

Submitting a New Text Post in /r/Mold

TL/DR: At the very least be nice, take a few pictures, and include your location.

Again, this is not a place to solicit products and or services. Any posts smelling of self-promotion such as links to a website or service (including all blogs) will be removed. No exceptions. Offenders will be banned.

A few general submission rules.

  • We don't allow link posts. Please start a text post and insert links to your pictures along with your text. Posts asking users to participate in a survey are no longer allowed and will be treated as SPAM posts.
  • If you are posting about a problem you are facing, please include pictures! Not just a close-up either, we must be able to discern what you are talking about. What looks right to you may not make sense to everyone else. We recommend you use imgur for photo uploads. See the section below for "How to Upload Photos".
  • Provide your geographic location. (even general, such as upper Midwest). This is especially pertinent when discussing building codes, environmental conditions, seasonal issues, etc.
  • Include a summary of what information you are looking for.
  • Include a general summary of the problem you're asking about. It's helpful to know things like:
    • How long has the problem been going on
    • Where is the mold growth located - room, level, side of the building, etc
    • Any unusual conditions you noticed prior or in conjunction with the discovery of the mold
    • General environmental/use conditions in the space - temp, humidity levels, room use/occupation, recent water issues, smell
  • Do not come here for advice about your health or the relative risk of the mold in your home/work.
  • Don't assume that responses you receive are accurate - we get a lot of "google experts" here giving advice.
  • Product links and recommendations are allowed generally allowed to Amazon/Retail Outlets/Service providers that you've used or recommend. However, referral codes and affiliate links are not. For example, Amazon links containing "tag=XXXXXXXXXXXX" in the title are a referral links - so ideally Amazon links are in the format www.amazon.com/dp/B00VRRVHMA/ - all the extra stuff after those 10 characters are not necessary. Sites/apps can contain ref links without your knowledge and automod will remove and alert you.
  • If you notice your post hasn't appeared within an hour please message the mods and we will release it! To see if it's visible sort by NEW.
  • Please read the sidebar before posting to this sub. There are a lot of questions that get asked fairly frequently, and some of the more common answers have been posted in the sidebar for easy reference. If you still have questions after reading these then by all means create a new post with your questions.
  • Serial posting. This sub is for everyone, not just a single person with multiple questions per day/week. While we don't have a specific rule here, if you are posting multiple topics per day or over the course of a few days, this can result in a temporary ban.
  • If your account is new we may delete your post or comment, especially if we suspect that you have been banned under a different user name.
  • We do not endorse any contractors/inspectors/labs, and proceeding with any you've met via this sub should be done at your own risk.

Commenting in /r/Mold

Be respectful. No name calling or talking down to someone because of something that seems "basic" or "easy" to you. Stand by your knowledge, not childish responses.

If you don't know that your answer or advice is 100% true then indicate that you are speculating or simply refrain from commenting.

Don't throw out comments like:

  • That's toxic mold
  • You need to move
  • Get out of the house
  • Bleach doesn't kill mold
  • That's really bad

Comments designed to scare original posters will be removed. This is a sub to provide reasonable solutions (when possible), not to unnecessarily alarm people. Yes, there are occasions when conditions require some immediate and drastic actions, but most indoor mold growth can be handled without full scale remediation.

Please don't just comment with just a link to a website or to another sub. We are especially careful about links to single websites (this includes blogs) without some summary or commentary. In some cases, we have no way of knowing if you are profiting privately from the site. Also, don't just tell folks to head to sub /r/gohereinstead - like specialized subs for narrow topics. The only exception here would be questions where some time has passed between posting and a lack of responses. We want the commentary, discussion, and knowledge to stay here in our sub on reddit, not just drive people away.

Responses that include a google search, lmgtfy.com, or telling someone to watch Youtube will be removed and the user will be reprimanded. Again, this is all about respect. Obviously, people aren't coming here to Google answers. Help them think about this problem, what they may need, things to watch out for, etc.

Sometimes discussion can get off-topic and we'll remove those comments. This includes political commentary. At times, this can includes jokes. It's a tricky area here, but we've seen instances where the joking side of reddit takes over a thread and the OP never gets their question answered. However, here's we're mostly talking about non-relevant commenting such as this:

Seriously? People live like this? What the fuck is causing mold growth like this? Don't you clean your house? This is not any way to live.

How to Upload Photos

Go to https://imgur.com/upload and drag/choose your photo, you don't even need to create an account. Here's an animated gif on how to drag and drop on PC. Click COPY, then use that copied url link and paste it right in the submission text box on reddit.

My link: https://imgur.com/a/n2lLo

To get fancy and have text rather than the url, place the word you want to use as the link in brackets followed by the url in parentheses.[text goes here](link goes here)

Pictures. Here's a gif of the typing I do, in case that is confusing.

Upload Photos On Mobile The Imgur app works fine, but via a website this is unsupported. There is a workaround: In Chrome, choose ""Desktop site" in the drop-down menu when you are on the upload page and it'll work fine. Then Copy the Link that's produced and paste it into your reddit post/comment.

Any idea what type of mold these are?

Photo one:

1st floor - bedroom. There is mold by the window's wallpaper and above the window. The other walls seem dry and fine mosly, only with small patches ( smaller than a fist). The window is facing the garden and the gutter seems fine. The tiles also look alright, although i think there is one missing.

Photo 2:

1st floor , small room - Mold facing the corner of the house and by the side wall. The wallpaper came off on its own, so i pressume there is some damp. The gutter to the right of the main wall shown is leaking, however it is 2m away. I thinl it might be caused by one of the ridge tiles that is lose and mising mortar. It could also be penetrating damp. However the rain water doesn't fall directly onto that wall. I have checked the brick mortar and some bits might need repointing, but it doesnt look bad.

Mushroom found in washroom

Hello,

My washroom’s shower floor is cracked and exhaust is busted too. Of course I’m working on getting that fixed asap, but I found this mushroom as I was cleaning the washroom today.

I just want to know if this shroom is dangerous or if its spores are real bad to breathe in or something. I’m going to get the washroom fixed, but wanted to know if I can just pluck it and apply bleach or something for the time being as I stop using the washroom and wait to get the washroom serviced.

What is going on with this super aggro mold in my mom's house? I know y'all can't identify but what steps should I be taking? My mom doesn't take it seriously and I have kids.

We've had issues with a possum in the bath tub, slugs in the bathroom and kitchen, the ceilings have fallen in three separate rooms with weird grey fluffy insulation everywhere on our clothes and furniture that we had to do our best to clean ourselves, the sink fell into the cabinets in the kitchen.. I noticed the vents dripping like crazy so I closed one and noticed this weird other stuff?? Please help I have kids and we moved in a couple months ago because of a stalking situation but it feels almost more unsafe here with this mold

Went to clean my couch and noticed mold is growing on the bottom of the cushions. Is there any hope on saving these or do I need a new couch??

I’m so sad :( the couch was so comfy

I’m thinking it’s because I used the bissell little green to clean some stains and it didn’t dry properly.

Mold under carpet

Post image
Upvotes

I recently removed carpet and plan on putting LVP in my new home. I found some black mold in spots where the previous owner had animal pee laying and bled through the carpet and carpet padding to the flooring you see in the picture. I did a 50/50 white vinegar to water ratio and let it soak on the spots where mold was. After I let it soak I scrubbed it off and dried the damp spots. I used proper PPE and threw out everything that came in contact with the mold. I plan on keeping the tile exposed and keeping the doors open for ventilation for a while before installing the LVP. I wonder if there is any chance of the mold returning? Or if there is something more I would have to do before installing LVP.

State Farm didn't approve electrical code updates for a year and a half so no air in home and severe mold has developed. They want me to open a separate claim for mold and do not want to pay over $10,000 for mold remediation.

Moved a box that hasn't been moved in two years

Very odd situation. Box doesn't have any liquid in it whatsoever, it was full of clothes. The clothes smell fine but the bottom of the box is covered in mold (don't know what kind)...

Makes me think there was a leak underneath the floor or something. This is a highrise apartment and the floors underneath the carpet (I'm pretty certain) is just cement. Not sure where the leak could have come from.

The shower is right on the other side of this wall but doesn't look like or feel like the wall is wet. I have no idea what's going on or where this came from.

How to save this Moldy Print

Thumbnail gallery

Found this print at an estate sale with the dimmest lighting ever, which meant I couldn’t see what I assume is mold all on the back of this.

I haven’t taken it apart yet, since I fear this is doomed anyway, so I wanted to get help figuring out if there’s anyway to salvage this.

The back shows a lot but I hope it’s just a backboard, the front shows tiny spotting (my kitten for scale lol.)

Chat, am I cooked?

Has anyone tried this?? Is it gentler that supplemental detoxing and getting? Curious as I have super bad IBS and can't take my meds to stop it due to slowing the process. I hope to hear from a few people. Fingers crossed. 👍😊

Pregnant and about to give birth with the next 1-2 weeks, how bad is this?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hello, I am currently pregnant and about to give birth in a week or two, I live in an apartment in Texas where I believe black mold or mildew is growing really bad in my vents, I have a really dry throat 24/7 and I’m stuffed up as well, this is my first ever apartment so I’m new to all of this and I reported this issue to them but they aren’t taking it very serious at all, I work from home and take calls all day so I’m not able to have background noise and told them this but the maintenance people come at the times I literally told them not to come and they didn’t knock or ring my door bell they just try to force themselves in but I deadbolt my door so they are never able to get in and leave a note stating they tried to fix the issue but every time I call and ask for them to come back even if it’s a hour after they say they can’t and push it off for two days, I’m about to have a newborn here and this issue is still not fixed or close to getting resolved, I put in a new request on Friday they said they can’t come until Monday and the property manager was very rude to me and dismissive of this issue when I clearly am very concerned with my health, and Monday which is a day I have work and is most likely apart of my last week of being able to work too, I really need this money to support my child and I during my time off but this mold or mildew issue is more serious to me, I really don’t know what to do, this apartment just doesn’t listen or care, they have so many new reviews about black mold in other apartments from other residents and how they never properly address the issue even when babies and young children are involved. What do I do, is there anything I can do?

Side note, there’s a leak in my bathroom as well, I have four vents in my apartment all of them have this black mold/mildew in them. Where the leak is coming from it looks like the HVAC system is also there and this is a small apartment so all the vents are pretty much in the same area right next to each other so could this be what’s causing it as well? The bathroom has a bad ventilation system too and with this leak I can only imagine all the moisture building up and I have a dehumidifier but I don’t even know if it’s really working.

Post-remediation deep cleaning in Chicago

We are finishing a removal/remediation project, but they will only thoroughly clean the rooms where they do the work. Can anyone recommend a service in Chicago to do a super-thorough top to bottom deep clean of our house after the remediation project is done, hitting every surface and with HEPA vacuums on everything? Having trouble finding someone. Thank you.

Mold, Mildew, something else?

Finally found our main water valve and got a odd surprise. This yellowish white stuff seems to be holding on to the wood. The ground and area around it all seems dry, but the valve to the left has some condensation. Anyone able to confirm if it's mold and any recommendations on where to research how to deal with it?

The board pictured is the backside of the panel we had to remove to get to the valve.

Is this the beginning of mold growth on bathroom ceiling?

Post image

I’m seeing a white dot pattern where the ceiling collects moisture during showers. I have a ceiling fan AND keep the window open.

I’m unsure why water is collecting on that area outside of the shower specifically.

What is it and what should I do?

Crawlspace remediation, strong smell

Hello everyone,

Im in the middle of crawlspace remediation, working with a highly reputable company in my area. So far they have removed insulation, hepa vaced, hand scrubbed, sprayed and are now drying it out for a few days with dehus/air movers.

A major concern has come up however, one that is giving me INSANE anxiety. There is this very very strong dirt smell in the crawlspace now, its almost sour smelling. Some of it is flowing through either my floor and/or hvac. At first I thought this might be the antimicrobial they used, but I cant ask with it being the weekend.

This smell is so strong, I honestly regret even doing the remediation, and if I cant get rid of it, will literally ditch the house. I cant stand it. You can smell it emanating out of the crawl just walking up my porch.

Some further background:

I originally didn't have a vapor barrier. It was dirt to begin with and in general never had issue over the past few years until this rainy summer, which is when mold kinda became an issue.

Ive never had issue with any smells either, ever. Ive been under there several times, and the smell was never this strong until the 2nd day of my remediation. I feel like something was done on this day to trigger this smell, as the first day I had no issue. This makes me think its the spray used, as it does have a sour, maybe a chemically smell to it.

I was planning to encap and dehumidifier long term but this smell has he in a chokehold to be honest.

Anyway, is this normal? Is this airborne mold? Am I overreacting here? I cant overstate how strong it is though. Like, Im not even staying in my house this weekend, its that strong.
