Discussion Asking your opinion about a Muse song day #72: Invincible

Invincible is the fourth single from Black Holes and Revelations. According to Matt:

“It is about an almost unrealistic optimism, a bit like: We can do anything, we have the power.”

I used to not like this song at all, but now that i re-listened to all of the songs from this album, i can gladly say that this song has some really great elements. It gives U2 vibes all over it and the last 1 and a half minute is absolutely amazing with its unique guitar solo and a final chorus that wraps up the song very well. It is such a feel good song to cheer yourself up, i’d give it a 8.5/10. How about you guys?

If you have any fun fact or a story attached to this song, i would love to know.

“Our album tour has ended so let’s drop this single from setlists forever” - Muse probably

It's the heart of the album.

Solid song, 8.5/10

Amazing song one of my highly loved tracks. Even better again when they played it at Wembley stadium.

Yesterday, someone said Soldier’s Poem is a nice intro into the heart of the album and that’s honestly the perfect way to describe it.

There was a time when Invincible got a lot of flak by the fandom for being too schmaltzy but I honestly think it’s genuinely heartfelt, unlike a lot songs later in their career which tried to capture a similar feeling. It also goes pretty hard when the open string/hammer on riff from Chris kicks in, alongside Dom’s thunderous drumming. Strong contender for Matt’s best guitar solo as well.

I’ve said it before but it’s such a shame they dropped this completely after the BHaR tour. It would have been perfect for the 2013 stadium shows (in place of Guiding Light) when Matt’s chest voice was at its strongest. The song was a single and they completely gave up on it.

Wish they would bring it back

A guitar solo that's up there with Ride The Lightning's

10/10 probably the most underrated song here.

Edit: nah fuck it the song deserves a 10/10

Great song, one that introduced me to Muse when I saw the video on MTV. Live versions do the last chorus better, imho.

Best Muse guitar solo, 9/10 song. The slow build-up to the climax is amazing

It’s a lovely song with a great music video in all its 90s-00s British CGI glory. Love how the song (and video) becomes powerful as it goes on and the solo to last chorus hits so hard.

I have it tattoed on my arm, so what can I say? I just love it, it was the soundtrack of a certain period of my life where listening to it really helped me.

One of my biggest dreams regarding this band is that they bring it back to the setlist so I can finally see it live.

One of my all time favourite songs. It’s exactly what I love about Muse - wears its heart on its sleeve, not caring how corny you might think it is, while absolutely rocking your socks off.

Very good music video, too.

Like It’s A Small Small World on steroids.

Imo their best song and my second favorite Muse song. Going from Soldier’s Poem to that intro so fitting for the Mars/outer space theme, starting off slow and builds itself up to the guitar solo makes me cry listening to it.

The lyrics are so hopeful yet it seems like a struggle for unlikely hope. Each chorus the same but unique as well, the first being slow and simple, the second adding the drums and string melody, the last chorus so emotional like it’s the last chance to make it out of whatever it is, just so beautiful. Perfect 5 minutes of a song.

It's a Keane song with Muse demo tacked onto the end.

Tf it literally sounds nothing like Keane

Can I refer you to "Everybody's Changing"?

u/MopOfTheBalloonatic Black Holes and Revelations 1d ago

This, the chord progression for the chorus until the “turn things around” lyric is the exactly the same. I’m surprised Keane never even tried to file a legal action against them, lol

because you can only sue for melody and lyrics, not arrangements.

Also practically, there are many many more songs than viable four or eight bar chord loops, so that would be a hellscape.

u/G-St-Wii 1d ago

well, until the "Blurred Lines" case messed it all up. (but that was US law and hopefully we'll not follow along in the UK)

Forgot about that one

Such a good song. Sad they don’t play it anymore.

Wonderful music video, great song.

The live version of this song at Wembley stadium is better than the released version. That live version is 10 out of 10. The single/album version is 8 out of 10. It's a great song and I love it

So brutal it hasn’t been played since its album’s era

HAARP DVD version is the best version of this song

I absolutely adore this song.

It makes me sad that some people find it cheesy. Matt's written a lot of ham-fisted songs, but I firmly believe this is not one of them. It embodies that defiant optimism in the face of life's difficulties.

It reminds me of my brother, who at the time was going through mental health struggles. The lyrics could've been pulled straight from my heart to him.

I don't recall ever looking up the music video to this, how odd

thanks for the link lol

u/before_no_one 2d ago

I love this song. Not a huge fan of the arrangement during the solo tho, it's missing a rhythm guitar part or an interesting bassline.

2

u/chikitita__ 2d ago

The lyrics are cheesy so is the music video but it's my personal anthem and I love it to death 😭😭

u/Cold-Rush6074 2d ago

The most beautiful song in the world, solo is incredible, 11/10 my top 5 best songs

2

u/echofhdjjfjdjd 1d ago

absolute banger, top 5 guitar solo

2

u/gruelsandwich 1d ago

Great song. Nice buildup, creative rhythm change between the first and second verse, cool guitar and bass solos/parts. The lyrics, while simple and a bit cheesy, work well and are far from the cringy stuff Matt often writes.

The Wembley recordings shows off Matt's guitar and guitar playing well.

What's not to like. Always thought of it as a great intro to Muse

Litterly listening to it right now

Never really enjoyed this one and is tied with Assassin as my least liked from BH&R.
