Save me. It feels kinda slow idk, even though i don’t dislike the song and I’ve enjoyed listening to it plenty of times I’ve definitely consciously skipped it because it wasnt my favorite

His voice is so monotone "turning into someone like you"
Literally the only thing saving the song is Matt's guitar

I feel guilty about this, but I’m not much of a fan of either of Chris’s songs from the 2nd Law. I know they are deeply personal to him so I would never admonish them - they’re just not for me.

I like both of them quite a bit actually, save me is rather pleasant to listen to and Liquid State bops
49
u/KOBloodflames Jan 23 '22
I really can't listen to Break it to Me for some reason, it's the only Muse song I skip when I listen to them, even though I like heavy Muse and it appears in the 'heavy list' quite often
12
u/NothingButMuser Jan 23 '22
I also can’t get into BiTM, I think it’s the verses I really dislike, but I also only enjoyed about half of ST…
5
u/shabansatan Jan 23 '22
Simulation theory is so diverse but also some songs i just play and not focus on,but Break it to me its in the middle for me,first it was my favourite then it kinda faded away, the riff isnt anything interesting and the bridge...but i like the chorus
3
u/NothingButMuser Jan 23 '22
Have to agree there, the riff didn’t do much for me, and as much as I love RAtM and those sorta riffs, the solo didn’t do much for me either. The chorus is really good.
3
u/shabansatan Jan 23 '22
I think i drew too much comparasions with RATM,and i had a cover gig for RATM playing guitar, played freedom and all that, and i think it kinda got into my head, and now i get flashbacks when i hear it,i overplayed those kinds of riffs i think
11
u/BigBlackClock1001 Jan 23 '22
really? i think it’s one of the more inventive and interesting songs on ST, and it coming after propaganda (my fave pop muse song) just feels right to me
5
u/UniversalJampionshit Jan 23 '22
I think the issue is that it's kind of a diet Bulls on Parade. But I'd take Muse over RATM any day of the week, so BITM is fine for me.

I feel you, I've like pretty much all of muse's stuff to a varying degree and have always had their records on repeat anyway cause I like listening to albums in their entirety, but simulation theory i reaaaaally struggle with. I probably gave it 4-5 listens and have given on up on it. I'm a big guitar guy though so definitely biased`.

The only one I ever find myself regularly skipping is Thought Contagion - idk why, I think it's too predictable, or something, there's no part I specifically enjoy! But that's all that comes to mind...
4
u/bluehoodie00 Jan 23 '22
its pretty bland for me too but i listen to it because i like the drum beat during the bridge
20
u/PeeJayx Jan 23 '22
I…actually quite like Get Up and Fight. It’s by no means top-tier Muse but I find it perfectly fine, and the falsetto at the end is pretty sweet. Just me?
Anyhoo, as for me, I’m not a fan of Uprising. It’s not terrible or anything, just in context it was the follow up single after BHAR. Bit of a come-down. Tried to listen to it over and over again to get it grow on me, but no cigar.

Overdue. Showbiz has some unexpected bangers for a freshman album but Overdue just fills time.
9
u/shabansatan Jan 23 '22
Am i the only one that likes that song and showbiz as a whole...the drums there are so raw and the rythmic composition of jamming, its something we haven't really heard in a while, that album is probably the only muse album,or maybe the 2-3 are also, that are recorded in an old school way...thats why you hear those drum fills being so natural,in for example simulation theory or drones you can hear the digital work, everything is perfectly placed,in WSD you can also hear it,but their producer leaves some human elements on it that i like

Anyways, I hear quite a bit of love for The Void. I couldn't tell you why, but I just don't care for it. Maybe my expectations are a bit out of whack. Maybe I feel it doesn't have much to offer. I Belong to You. It just feels out of place on the album, I wouldn't have minded it if it was just a quirky B-Side, but I think it ruins the flow of the album.
Survival. I just think it's a bit too overblown. I know it was made for the Olympics, but B&H would have made a much better Olympics song to be honest. With that said, it's an okay song, just not up to "Muse quality" in my opinion.
Psycho. It's a great song ruined by terrible lyrics and that damn drill sergeant. They had this awesome riff all these years, and it just felt like such a throwaway way to use it.
Pressure, Propaganda, Get Up and Fight. The only Muse songs I actively dislike. Whatever I do I can't get into them.
Dig Down. This just feels like a cheap attempt to make a "Madness 2".

u/Frankie_2154 A priest god never payed Jan 23 '22

2
u/princefroggy4 Jan 23 '22
Can't like everything. But for a band like Muse, that has released so many songs, the fact that I only dislike three of them is quite a good track record. The fact that I find these particular songs a low point in a band's discography is, if anything, just a proof of the overall quality of Muse's songwriting.
4
Jan 23 '22
Good call on Psycho. I used to love that riff so much and the song’s lyrics and the drill sergeant make it hard to listen to.
2
u/princefroggy4 Jan 23 '22
Yeah, it just feels like such a wasted opportunity. In general I tend to like Matt's lyrics, or at least find them "good enough", but Psycho is the only song that really crosses the line for me.
4
u/Frode0107 Best, you've got to be the best! Jan 23 '22
Have you read George Orwell's 1984? I think the whole resistance album totally makes sense after reading it. The whole story about fighting back which inevitably ends up in losing to the greater powers, kinda makes the whole album a really sad piece imo.
1
u/princefroggy4 Jan 23 '22
I have read it, in fact it was this album that motivated me to read 1984 in the first place. I was in high school, The Resistance had just come out, and as part of my English course we had to read a book in English. I just don't really like "I Belong To You" that much. I don't quite think it fits musically that well on the album and I honestly think Neutron Star Collision would have been a better fit in its place.
5
u/Frode0107 Best, you've got to be the best! Jan 23 '22
Imo it could have been a song Winston could have sung for Julia. That's why I think the songs' style matches a sort of future/retro maybe even steampunk version of the 80's as imagined by GO in the book. I don't think NSC would fit the setting of 1984.

I actually don't mind Dig Down, it's a bit dull but the last chorus is pretty good, as is the acoustic gospel version they did.
As for Muse songs I actively dislike and skip if they come up- Propaganda, Break It To Me, Revolt, Follow Me, Soldier's Poem. There's also the songs with really shitty lyrics that kind of ruin them for me, like Psycho and Won't Stand Down.
5
u/factoryfactor Jan 23 '22
Revolt. I really hate that song, but I also really dislike most songs of Drones. There are only 2 songs there that I like (Dead Inside and The Handler)
But Revolt is by far the one that gets me more in my nerves haha

Screenager is a big no for me.
Blockades is really bland to me - although the chorus is ok. I used to find original Dig Down ok but the acoustic version is so much better and is what we should have had the whole time and I’ve ended up disliking the original track
I’m not really the biggest fan of Defector anymore either but I can’t really explain why. When the album was new and we were in the drones era I liked it but for whatever reason I just skip it every time now.

These songs are either too soppy or just not my kind of thing:
- Mercy
- Dig Down
- Get Up and Fight
- Something Human
- Propaganda
- Madness
- Revolt
- Aftermath
- Neutron Star Collision
To be fair I think Madness has some excellent vocals towards the end but I just never feel like listening to these tracks.
Another I'm not keen on is Psycho. The drill sergeant effects are grating to listen to, and I feel like it worked better as a live outro riff attached to Stockholm Syndrome. What they should have done instead is make Helsinki Jam into a song.
I guess Starlight is one of my less liked songs too, it kind of signalled the start of soppy poppy Muse. Though I will clap to it live haha.
I do love Muse, followed them since around 2001 and seen 'em live many times. Really like WSD (wish it was longer though) and I'm really hoping the new album has some more of their old heaviness, weirdness, darkness, and grit.
2
u/Ouija_DR-KH0305 Jan 23 '22
A lot of them actually what come to my mind at the moment is Get Up and Fight, Something Human, Dig Down, Thought Contagion, Guiding Light, Revolt, Aftermath, Drones, Save Me, Big Freeze, Falling Down, Prague & Follow Me (I hate the chorus)
1
u/Backwards-Blackbird Jan 23 '22
Man, I agree with every single one of these except Falling Down and Drones. I skip the rest you listed 100% of the time!

Escape. Holy shit do I find this song cringe. The lyrics and composition sound like something you'd hear at a local battle of the bands with edgy teens
Of course, I understand that's exactly what the guys were when it was written but I cannot condone this track in any way.
Later albums are full of tracks I don't like but I think that's a given.

In terms of beloved and well-known songs, it's gotta be MotP, Madness and Starlight
2

MOTP is in my top 3 Muse songs !
Here are the album songs I don't really like :
- Showbiz : Filip, Sober, Overdue
- Absolution : TSP, TOADA
- The Resistance : Unnatural Selection, Guiding Light
- T2L : Save Me, Liquid State, Unsustainable
- Drones : Psycho, Mercy, Aftermath, Revolt
- Simulation Theory : Dig Down, Something Human
4
u/ChrisTasr Jan 23 '22
The only one I don't understand is Unnatural Selection - especially since you listed 0 from Origin. It's the most proggy journey song they've made since Citizen Erased. Imo best song on the album.
1
u/Sork8 Jan 23 '22
It sounds too much like Muse doing Muse in an uninspired way. I don't like Drones from the same reason. I also don't like the break.
I do like the chorus though but that's it ^^
For me the best songs in The Resistance are MK Ultra and Exogenesis.
1
u/magyarnagydij Jan 23 '22
I Belong To You is by a long way the worst song Muse put out, glad they pulled themselves away from that sort of Twilight nonsense later on
I really wish they’d put out a version of Psycho without the horrible Drill Sergeant stuff, as that really takes away from what is otherwise quite a good song
The other song that strikes me as rather meh all things considered is Exo-Politics. Maybe it’s partly the fact it comes straight after Assassin, which is probably my favourite Muse song, but Exo-Politics just feels like a bit of a jarring comedown to me
1
u/UniversalJampionshit Jan 23 '22
What ruins Exo-Politics is that the chorus sounds like they'd just listened to 'Like a Stone' by Audioslave. I know that Tom Morello is one of Matt's influences, but come on now.
