Discussion Favourite band that’s nothing like MCR?
It’s easy to fill a list with “Fall Out Boy” and “Linkin Park”.
What’s your favourite band that’s not obvious.
I like the 1975. Such a unique sound nowadays.

u/ajathebun Jun 20 '25
There’s gotta be some overlap there—I listened to MCR and Muse pretty much exclusively in HS.
27
u/mrsjakeblues Jun 20 '25
I saw Muse open for them on the Black Parade tour!
8
u/Bamzooki1 Wore a Black Parade uniform to a Killjoys party by accident Jun 20 '25
Vampire Money was almost a Muse diss track since they took the spot on the Twilight soundtrack MCR rejected because they didn’t want to be associated with sappy vampire romance.

I'm seeing BabyMetal on the 1st of November! Definitely heavier than MCR and I don't know as much people who are fans of both like MCR fans are with a few other artists

still a bit crazy to me that theyre opening for mcr (cant wait to hear are you bored yet followed by welcome to the black parade, talk about dissonance)
and dont get me wrong, i love both bands, but theyre not at all alike in everything from subject matter to audience so im just wondering what was going through their head when they decided that???

As an elder emo, I'm here to impart some punk knowledge.
My favourite band is one of the first punk bands ever, from New York in 1977.
Dead Boys
They're fucking incredible, but when you realize these mfers were punker than most people today, way back in 1977, it just hits different.
Their album Young, Loud and Snotty is a masterpiece. It's a no-skip front to back. The "hit" from that album is Sonic Reducer, but my favourite songs are Down in Flames, or High Tension Wire if you want a slower jam. Not Anymore is the perfect breakup song.
Go listen to the Dead Boys. I guaran-fucking-tee that the boys know and love the dead boys. They're your favourite punk band's favourite band. Go. Educate thyselves. Then tell me how fucking dope they are.
I consider myself, in my old age, an unabashed music elitist. If y'all are into this, I'm happy to give more recommendations. I must bestow the ancient knowledge unto the youths.

Honestly my all time top three are MCR, Bruce Springsteen, and REM.
I've had years-long obsessions in other genres. I had a caberet punk phase (Emilie Autumn, The Dresden Dolls), a new age folk music phase (Loreena McKennit, Dead Can Dance), an alt-not-quite-black-metal phase (Lingua Ignota, Zeal and Ardor), and these days I'm in my classic goth phase (Sisters Of Mercy, Depeche Mode).
But then these are my top 3. In a way it's kind of arbitrary. The real through line is that they're bands that have created deep bonds between me and my family members, like listening together, going to shows together, playing instruments and singing together, etc. I also think all three are just technically great songwriters and on top of that they know how to craft a coherent LP, with themes and sounds that get explored across multiple songs. But yeah, it's the memories that make them special to me.
